What is the proper thing to do when the following happens (happened to me yesterday):
Ok my friend and I are playing at Twin Creeks here locally in Chuckey. Bad day to play because the course was absolutely bombarded with the good weather after a few days of bad weather and calling for more bad weather today. Anyway, I hadn't ever played this course myself either so that didn't help. They have a ton of parallel fairways, tee shots that are elevated over the green from the previous hole below you, just crazy stuff IMO. I'm not used to things being that tight.
Anyway, there were plenty of fores being yelled and guys hitting into each others fairways all day. Then I get to a tee on the back nine. I am addressing my ball when I hear a "thunk" right behind me. I turn around and see a ball laying 2 feet from me. My friend was at the cart and whipped around and said what was that. I said a ($%(# ball. So, I stay calm and think well maybe the guy lost it in the air or whatever. I ALWAYS yell fore if I lose the ball in flight and a course is crowded.
Anyway, this jackabilly comes over the hill on his cart, full mouthful of tobacco - and is heehawing laughing. He said I made ya jump didn't I? I'm a calm person but I then lost it a little. I said don't you know how to yell fore? He said "aww he%%, it wouldn't have hit ya that hard. What are ya, a patsy?" Well, I guess me at 6'2 315 might appear to be a patsy to some I guess. I try to stay halfway calm and say I think you need to get off of my tee box right now and take your errant shot with you. He then said yeah what are you going to do about it. I said well for one I have my driver in hand and I could crush your face in with it - how's that for starters. His smile went away from his face pretty fast and he grabbed his ball, cussed a little, and sped off. We never saw him again the rest of the day.
This is the first confrontation like that I've ever had on a golf course. Now I haven't played for years and years but I've played quite a bit over the past couple now. Should I have stood my ground and done what I done since the guy was obviously being the way he was? Or should I have just brushed it off? I mean if he would have came up there and said sorry that would have been fine with me. But laughing, then saying it wouldn't have hit me that hard and THEN calling me a pansy kind of got me over the edge just a little. I try not to let people ruin my day but that ruined the rest of my round - I was fired up after that. I shot a 42 on the front and after that I shot a 53 on the back nine.
What would have been the right thing to do? Just ignore his ignorance, go to the clubhouse (I would have kind of felt like a 3rd grade tattletale myself) or something else?
