The Golf Thread

Never mind. Downloading the App now. I have an Ipod Touch and not phone but works out great. I also downloaded a Tennessee Volunteer Application with the schedule and roster. Neat stuff.

It's a good thing the tournament starts tomorrow and not today. The wind out there today would have made Par an excellent score.

See any good action today GA?

I bet the wind will make the greens insanely fast. (Like they aren't usually)

The 2 most memorable shots I saw were Tim Clark's Ace during the Par 3 Tournament . . . and some Japanese player that was attempting the "Skip" shot that everybody tries across the pond on 16. He hit it way too hard and it skipped on the water only once before rising back up and taking dead aim at the blue hairs in the gallery behind the green. The gasps and the visual of everybody diving under their chairs was quite humourous.

now this on video would be a thousand times better than somebody actually making the shot.

ahhh! my favorite event of the year is here. everything from the course, the players, to the piano music. I LOVE The Masters!!!

bpv should be there all week. At least I think he said in this thread he would be.

Just got in yesterday and went to the Par 3. I'll spend most of the rest of the week beside 11 green, which is behind the 12th tee. 11 is so brutal now that about 2/3 of the field ends up chipping from short right and are scared to dear about it. 12 is just pure entertainment when the wind is swirling about.

That has to be the most packed part of the course.

I was browsing the net because I think I would like to get a GPS unit for my golf game. I had no idea how expensive they were. Then I found this application for IPhones and Blackberry's called TeeDroid. It costs $20/year and they say they will put any course in you request for free within a few days. They already have a couple of my local courses listed on it. I read some reviews and its evidently pretty solid. However, I do not have the type of phone needed.

So I ask a stupid question.......I have Alltel service right now. Could I buy a Blackberry phone (one that Alltel uses) on Ebay or Amazon and be able to use it with my Alltel service if I can get them to switch my number over? Or is it more complicated than that? Because I'm not up for renewal right now and I really can't just waltz in there and fork over $500 for a Blackberry. I have saw a couple online for under $100 already. I wouldn't mind the upgrade to a Blackberry anyway from the Razor that I have. And this TeeDroid thing looks pretty nifty if it works as advertised and I could get them to put a couple of more local courses in there that I currently play.

You can buy an unlocked phone that is usable on any service. I had a friend that had an iPhone on Tmobile that way. BTW there is an app on the iPhone that is free that uses gps to calculate distance, no course upload required. It's not a skycaddy or anything, but the price is right.

enjoy...
you lucky bastard...

What is 2 man captains choice game? Some friends and I are going in a bit and they said they wanted to play that...Anyone know?

You probably walked right by me. I was standing right behind the 8th tee on the Par 3 course before heading back up to the 18th green for a few minutes on the way out.

What is the proper thing to do when the following happens (happened to me yesterday):

Ok my friend and I are playing at Twin Creeks here locally in Chuckey. Bad day to play because the course was absolutely bombarded with the good weather after a few days of bad weather and calling for more bad weather today. Anyway, I hadn't ever played this course myself either so that didn't help. They have a ton of parallel fairways, tee shots that are elevated over the green from the previous hole below you, just crazy stuff IMO. I'm not used to things being that tight.

Anyway, there were plenty of fores being yelled and guys hitting into each others fairways all day. Then I get to a tee on the back nine. I am addressing my ball when I hear a "thunk" right behind me. I turn around and see a ball laying 2 feet from me. My friend was at the cart and whipped around and said what was that. I said a ($%(# ball. So, I stay calm and think well maybe the guy lost it in the air or whatever. I ALWAYS yell fore if I lose the ball in flight and a course is crowded.

Anyway, this jackabilly comes over the hill on his cart, full mouthful of tobacco - and is heehawing laughing. He said I made ya jump didn't I? I'm a calm person but I then lost it a little. I said don't you know how to yell fore? He said "aww he%%, it wouldn't have hit ya that hard. What are ya, a patsy?" Well, I guess me at 6'2 315 might appear to be a patsy to some I guess. I try to stay halfway calm and say I think you need to get off of my tee box right now and take your errant shot with you. He then said yeah what are you going to do about it. I said well for one I have my driver in hand and I could crush your face in with it - how's that for starters. His smile went away from his face pretty fast and he grabbed his ball, cussed a little, and sped off. We never saw him again the rest of the day.

This is the first confrontation like that I've ever had on a golf course. Now I haven't played for years and years but I've played quite a bit over the past couple now. Should I have stood my ground and done what I done since the guy was obviously being the way he was? Or should I have just brushed it off? I mean if he would have came up there and said sorry that would have been fine with me. But laughing, then saying it wouldn't have hit me that hard and THEN calling me a pansy kind of got me over the edge just a little. I try not to let people ruin my day but that ruined the rest of my round - I was fired up after that. I shot a 42 on the front and after that I shot a 53 on the back nine.

What would have been the right thing to do? Just ignore his ignorance, go to the clubhouse (I would have kind of felt like a 3rd grade tattletale myself) or something else?

this is probably going to sound a little arrogant and uppity, so I apologize beforehand.

Your main problem was playing at Twin Creeks. That's about 95% of it. TC is just a basic muni out in the middle of nowhere yet closer, cheaper, and not as nit-picky as Graysburg, Andrew Johnson and whatever River Trace is called these days for people in Limestone, Chuckey and most of Greenville to get to. It's not necessarily that the back nine is tightly wound together, it's just its' wide open (read: no trees ANYWHERE) and a bomber's (or duffer's) delight because every ball is always in play and there's no worry about a bad lie. That includes even if you're 3 fairways over.

It's a fun a little track to play when you're just trying to hone your game or play for cheap. Just realize that on one of the early beautiful sunny UET days of the year, everyone and their grandmother is going to be out there playing. You also get that kind of attitude just about anywhere so just get used to it and let it go. I will say TC tends to lend itself to being more open to "redneck, good ole bad a** country boy" attitude than most other golf courses I've been to, but I attribute a great deal of that to the surroundings.
