The Golf Thread

As I haven't set foot on any of them, I can't argue with that. On television, they all pretty much look like a scene from Great Expectations.

I wouldn't mind losing a few golfballs in the heather sometime just to find out how bad they are, though.

For the money, the condition of the courses is pathetic, especially the Ailsa.

Looks like Tiger is off to another rough start. Tom Watson with another amazing round. I would love to see him in contention come Sunday.

My picks:
Tiger

If Tiger does not win, I would love to see Duval, Garcia, or Watson win it.

15 putts on the front yesterday, so maybe that part of the game is cured. Predictably, I am now unable to find the fairway.

Tomorrow you will find the fairway and have 25 putts over 9.

I was having one of the best games of my life a few weeks ago and then managed to snowman a par 4 and triple a par 3 on the last 4 holes.

Golf is a funny game.

That's probably just the heat and being tired

I'm playing Justin Timberlake's eco-friendly Mirimichi course on the 26th. The word is it's a first class track.

What could be better than a championship hosted by the association that runs the tour, as the last major of the season, where the emphasis seems to be on identifying the golfer who plays the best rather than trying to make good golfers look bad by protecting par?

I like it. It is what the US Open should be, IMO.

i agree...but the PGA of America does not run the PGA Tour....FYI!

Don't confuse me, please. My world view makes a lot more sense than the way things actually are:p

Is 23 putts for 9 holes a lot? It sure seemed like a lot. It sure seemed like a pretty good way to ruin a pretty good round of hitting the ball by putting like I was having violent seizures.

That was Tuesday :good!:

This afternoon I am anticipating driving it in the fairway, putting decently, and developing a randomly occurring, uncontrollable pull-hook with my irons.

Thats why we love golf- it's always interesting.

The golf course is one of the VERY few venues that you will hear me cuss.

The last course I played was an Arnold Palmer course that had BEACHES for bunkers. I dont practice bunker shots enough to recover well.

Not a chance. The Masters and Players both have better fields. The big pile of PGA pros hurts the PGA.

Speaking of...anybody catch the 10 man playoff in the club pro tournament? I was shocked to see how many got invites to the PGA. I have never paid attention to that. I knew some got in, but 20 something? Give me a break

You may know more about The Vols...but not this!

The masters, Open, and US Open have much weaker fields than the PGA Championship. Last year 156 players teed off in the PGA. 98 of the top 100 were there.

The US Open has amateurs play, British Open has players from other tours that can qualify based on their ranking on their tour. Masters...no...all those past champions that can't break 85 anymore.

The 20 club pros that play in the PGA are not going to win....we know that, but they represent themselves very well in that event!

You seem a bit outdated here. The opens have lesser fields because the nature of an open allows for qualifiers.

The Masters new invite method and Players make them the best fields. I hear you on the PGA, but its field is no better than the two I listed. 98 of the top 100 means diddly.

By the way. Tiger Woods just missed the cut.
I am starting to think he tries to be too conservative on Thursday and Friday of majors. He apprears to try and hover around par, make the cut, and then turn it on. Other players are several strokes ahead and then he has a lot to make up.

I may be crazy, that is just something I think I see.

There's nothing conservative about not being able to get off the tee safely.

But that's not really the point, is it? If I want to play a very well-manicured golf course, I can drive across town, plunk down sixty bucks, and play Willow Creek. The whole idea of going to Scotland to play (no, I've never been), as I understood it, is to experience a different style of play, and to soak in the history and tradition of golf's birthplace.

Yadda yadda yadda. The greens at Turnberry were the worst. I've played in the past 15 years. They were spotty as hell and rolled like the third cut. The inn is top shelf on the other hand.

I realize that Turnberry is considered to be the redheaded stepchild of the Open rota, but you would have to admit, it's providing a tough test this time around. Did you/have you played St. Andrews?

I've played both. Turnberry is beautiful but was in awful condition. St. Andrews is awesome. Nostalgia everywhere and a lot of fun.
