The Golf Thread

i don't know. it's always been my experience that when lodging rates drop the attractions and such drop their rates too.

i figured 100 dollars would get me on some nicer courses, or a good place to stary. i'd look at paying more if i had too.

i was really just hoping for suggestions so i could do the research and check rates. last time i was near Myrtle Beach i was like 6.

If you're staying up north, I highly reccomend playing the Big Cats at Ocean Ridge Plantation, they have 4 courses on site - Lions Paw, Panthers Run, Tigers Eye and Leopards Chase, all are good tracks but Tigers Eye and Leopards Chase are exceptional, 2 of the best courses in the MB area and 2 of my personal favorites, I play them both twice a year. You should also give strong consideration to The Dunes Club, Grand Dunes, Aberdeen, Long Bay,The Pearl (west course) and Oyster Bay and Carolina National and Crow Creek, all are fine courses.

If you make it down south to play a round or two then Blackmoor, The River Club, The Founders Club, The Heritage Club, World Tour Golf Links, True Blue and Caledonia are all top notch golf venues, you can't go wrong with any of them, they are all in the Pawleys Island area.

If you're ever looking for a golf package of stay and play or just play, I highly suggest going with "Golf Packages of the Carolinas.com" they are the best in the buisness in that area, they are good people and I've been going through them for 11 years running.

I play a ton of golf in the MB area (be there playing in Oct.) and have played all the courses I mentioned and many more in the area and I'm confident you will find find any of those I mentioned to your liking.

got it.

Pawley's Plantation was reasonably priced (although Pawley's has a really goofy par 3) and as good as the big name courses there. We also played a pretty new course called the Witch when I was there. It was a decent course, not long but didn't play short, tree's keep most of it tight.

The big name tracks are TPC Myrtle, The Dunes (I think it used to host a big senior event), True Blue, Caledonia. I haven't played True Blue or Caledonia, which are sister courses on Pawley's, but they send out quite a bit of info and offer some packages. Might find something there. I also think the Legends Club (had two courses in Franklin and put two fabulous courses around Williamsburg) has its home course there. Haven't played it, but like the hell out of all their other courses that I've played.

The Legends has 4 courses in the MB area, The Heathland, The Parkland, The Moorland and The Heritage Club. I've only played The Parkland and The Heritage Club. The Parkland is okay but nothing to brag about, The Heritage however is an awesome course but it's one tough hombre, better be swinging well if you want to enjoy it fully.

I would highly recommend not playing tpc of myrtle beach. Waste of money. Not in very good shape.

Anyone played the Dunes in Myrtle Beach? It's ranked in the top 100 classic courses in the country.

I liked it. It's your typical myrtle beach course. You won't be wowed but it will be an enjoyable round.

It's been a while since I've played them, but the Glen courses (Glen Dornoch, Heather Glen, etc.) used to be pretty nice. I assume they still are. If you play Glen Dornoch, the last three holes can be kind of rough if you aren't playing well.

i had heard all these great things and when I played it, itdidn't live up to all the hype to me.
To each their own though.

You must be used to playing some mighty fine courses if The Dunes didn't leave a good impression on you, but yes, to each his own. Regardless of whether one thinks it lives up to it's billing or not, it's still far from a typical MB course for several reasons, it's 1 of only 2 courses there that actually plays on ocean front property, it's tighter than probably 80% of the other courses in the area, the rough is deep, thick and extremely penal which is unusual for the area, (they have tamed it a little since it went public but it's still pretty nasty) and unless they have changed policy recently they do not double tee there under any circumstance.

It's not the lone king of the hill that it once was before all the high end courses started popping up in MB, but it is still a pretty prestigious tee time for the MB area.

I enjoyed the the Glens courses (Shaftsbury Glen was my favorite) but they aren't on my list of personal favorites, but you're right, they are quality courses.

In all fairness I went in peak season and had it not had so much wear and tear, I could easily see it being top notch. The two guys we played with said it usually was in much better shape. I think this was in 05.

Don't misunderstand, i really enjoyed the course. And I enjoy myrtle beach's golf. There's just not a course down there that just wows me.

We had a slight change in plans. We found a cheaper, nicer spot south of Myrtle. I think I'm going to play 36 one day at Pawley's and pick another spot close to the condo.

So can someone explain to me why Tiger is still ranked #1? That's an even worse system than the BCS.

It's not the system's fault nobody can knock him off.

It's down to Phil now. Westwood is out.

Knock him off? He hasn't done anything of note since June 2008. And no the Bridgestone win wouldn't be of very much note.

Phil has had several weeks now to take over #1. Westwood too.
