The Golf Thread

bro, I'm just telling you that should you happen to get an invite to either the Greenbrier or the Homestead, you need to roll your show in there and enjoy. The two are very close together and the Homestead boasts one of the best golf courses in the world. Probably the best mountain course there is.

I've looked at both, but the problem is there is no good way to get there. It is an 8.5 hour drive, or you can fly puddle jumpers around the country and then drive.

Pinehurst and Kohler are much easier to reach and Doral is next door to MIA, so neither Greenbrier or Homestead have made the top of the ticket yet.

Agree on Kohler and Pinehurst, but the mountain resort setting is an altogether different deal. Accommodations at the two mountain gigs is top of the charts. Golf at Homestead is as good as any. Greenbrier is a step back for golf.

Sunset Beach or North Myrtle, depending on which week i can get off work. we were a little late getting this going.

i'm already campaigning for Hilton Head next year.

i'll take golf suggestions for this year now, less than 100 bucks.

I'll be in Myrtle Beach at the end of this month playing in a tournament there. That's my yearly trip the week before labor day. It's a great place to go and many nice golf courses in the area.

It's short but i've never had a bad experience there.

and I don't recall the pricing. I remember it being reasonable. He asked about others in Myrtle, but I don't remember any better in the area being under $100 bucks in peak season. Haven't been in years. If I trek to the East coast, I'm going to Hilton Head.

It's around 125 but they always run deals with their sister courses that cheapens it a bit.

HH is definitely the better gig, though.

I must be a bit strange because I don't get HH. Been twice and really was bored both times.

and you played golf? Come on. A brother can line up 36 a day at different, and great, golf courses for a week. Maybe you and I golf vacation differently. I play and the rest is simply time I have to kill between playing.

All I can figure is that I had way too high of expectations because I've always heard how awesome it was. I think HTown is the most overhyped course I have ever played. But that makes sense because I think Pete Dye is the most overhyped designer in the world. I think a good case of dementia in his old age may improve his ability a bit.
I think the HHI courses are good but not for the money. I'll stay in Pinehurst for the same $$$ and there is no comparison imo.

Harbor Town is a very good track if you're a good iron player. Otherwise it isn't. It's also nowhere close to the best track at Hilton Head.

The problem I have with Harbor Town is the same problem I have with all Dye courses, he takes imagination out of the equation. It's a "my way or the highway" approach. Plus I met him at a conference in Vegas and he's an arrogant sob.

Agreed about Dye. Sawgrass is the most contrived, tricked up place I've ever played.

That said, 17 and 18 at Harbor Town are fabulous holes. Palmetto Dunes courses are all great courses. Long Cove is the best course there.

Place is awesome. I managed get out there after they reopened it from fall aerification - still nice.

It's definitely best to be a member one place because you can get on all the other courses.

Haig Point over on Defauskie is great. The last time I was down there I played the West Course at Belfair. I really enjoyed it. It's a fair course, and a lot of fun to play.

Haig Point is the second best course there. Even the ferry ride is cool.

Based on our rate for the week it looks like peak season ends the week before labor day.

Local golfer turns pro:

DEFENDING CHAMPION MATT SAVAGE TEES OFF TODAY AT THE POWERBILT KENTUCKY OPEN TO BE HELD AT LEXINGTON COUNTRY CLUB. ALSO IN THE FIELD IS GARLAND NISSAN CITY-AM CHAMPION MITCHELL MOORE WHO IS PLAYING HIS FIRST EVENT AS A PROFESSIONAL THIS WEEK.

Don't know him very well, and I've only seen him play a few holes in our Jack and Jill, but he seems like a nice kid. He's good--the best golfer in the area--but I have no idea how good is good enough to make a living at the game. Anyway, best of luck to him.

That true of the golf courses as well?

If so, you'll find a load of courses that are phenomenal.

i don't know. it's always been my experience that when lodging rates drop the attractions and such drop their rates too.

i figured 100 dollars would get me on some nicer courses, or a good place to stary. i'd look at paying more if i had too.

i was really just hoping for suggestions so i could do the research and check rates. last time i was near Myrtle Beach i was like 6.

got it.

Pawley's Plantation was reasonably priced (although Pawley's has a really goofy par 3) and as good as the big name courses there. We also played a pretty new course called the Witch when I was there. It was a decent course, not long but didn't play short, tree's keep most of it tight.

The big name tracks are TPC Myrtle, The Dunes (I think it used to host a big senior event), True Blue, Caledonia. I haven't played True Blue or Caledonia, which are sister courses on Pawley's, but they send out quite a bit of info and offer some packages. Might find something there. I also think the Legends Club (had two courses in Franklin and put two fabulous courses around Williamsburg) has its home course there. Haven't played it, but like the hell out of all their other courses that I've played.
