The Golf Thread

My favorite week, including Augusta. Was at Brookline and it was the most fun I've ever had, at least Sunday was, at any sporting event, including our national title. I love Augusta, but in all honesty, the US Amateur is a more entertaining event for a golf nut.

Ashamed to say I've never been to an US Amateur. had the opportunity a couple times, but schedule conflicts prevented it.

do so. It's fantastic. Small crowds, great venues, match play and you can truly walk the course with the guys playing the matches. Very entertaining.

Geesh, some lousy weather for today's practice rounds at the Ryder Cup, hope it's not like that all weekend, I hate watching rainy day golf.

My golfing lamp for this year is burning low. I might have to go out one more time just to prove to myself that it isn't worth it, but that will be the end.

I've "played" for about 8 years but only really started to play seriously towards the end of this year. I'm not God-awful, and people I play with tell me they think I could be decent once I start playing regularly. Thus, I'm debating on lessons in the late winter/early spring next year. Anybody got any thoughts one way or the other if they are worth it or is it better just to learn on the course? And by worth it I mean that I have X amount of money to spend on golf and if lessons are worth a substantial portion of that amount.

Lessons are worth it, although not always a necessity. With you having almost a decade under your belt, I'm sure you have some of you own swing tendencies. With that said, if you get lessons, realize you may first get worse before you get better. Over time it's worth it, though.

I think lessons are the best investment you can make in golf. Working on your swing must be done on the range. Then you go to the course to really learn how to play. I actually think now would be a great time to start on your swing -as long as you have a heated range you can hit balls at.

I keep one of those weighted clubs, in the house when the weather turns, I try to swing a feew times a week, just to try and keep some semblance of muscle memory

You guys are just reinforcing what I already knew....and that is to get lessons. Now to find the best deal in Knoxville.....

Lee Westwood announced he would not be playing on American soil in 2011.

I ,for one, want to personally thank him for this decision. Not seeing his picket-fenced mouth and whiny ass will make my 2011 golf experience much greater.

It doesn't have to be a big investment. Take one or two lessons and then play with somebody that is better than you are. You'll be surprised how much you can pick up just by being around someone that has an idea what they are doing.

Solid advice.

That makes a lot of sense.

I typically am a bit too embarassed to go with good golfers, and sadly I'm one of the better ones of the group of hackers I go with.

Time to put aside the ego....
