The Golf Thread

Rarely talk about my play on here, but broke par twice over the past week. Pretty good for a guy with 3 year old twins who never works on the important stuff (50 yds and in).

Nice work BigPapa. It is good to keep up with everyones game. I enjoy reading posted scores.

I took my little girl out to the USGA Womens Am final today. We had a nice time. It is on a public course that I play as often as I can and it is only 34 bones for 18 and a cart.

My swing and ball striking have improved 10x in the past week. I read Ben Hogans little 5 steps to a golf swing book, and it just kinda made things click with me. I still have mishits and stuff because I've not completely committed everything to muscle memory, but I'm doing MUCH better. I took 6 strokes off my average for the course we usually play, and I'm hoping to improve another few today after taking another range trip.

I kept trying to mold my swing to what other guys were doing, but the fact is, I'm just over 6'3"...my swing plane isn't going to be like my 5'11" friends'.

Sometimes I still slump into almost a baseball type swing...but I'm starting to get away from it. Things I never thought about before reading the book were keeping my right elbow in, the proper way to shift my weight (i always thought the left knee didn't move at all) and how to turn my hips on plane, as well as keeping my arms closer together, and how to grip with my right hand, I always used my thumb and finger instead of my middle fingers. Things are getting better.

On top of all that, I now have 1/2" longer clubs, so it helps, too. Sometimes I still hit a ball wrong on the club face, or aim a little wrong, and it goes off target, but it's a good solid hit, rather than some awful 50yd slice.

You know my penchant for the Masters, but the US Amateur is the best tournament to attend because it is typically at Open type venues and you can actually get on the course and follow or even chat with the players.

Well, I think I'm going to give it a shot this week. I'll take my elbow to the range, start with chips and pitches, and work my way up to see how close to a full swing I can get.

Wish me luck.

Stay with the wedges and 8 and 9 irons...

Then se how you feel the next day..

Good luck

I'd highly recommend teeing everything up for a few days at least. Good luck.

That's the general plan. It is storming here today, so it looks like tomorrow might be my test drive.

I'm not all that concerned about the impact, divot or not. It is the straigtening at the bottom of the downswing and the pronation with the added force of the club as the head comes through that will test the recovery I think. I can do all of the motions without pain or stiffness now, but doing them with the added stress of a clubhead pulling the joints through the zone might be a different matter.

I would probably be wise to take my 56 and leave the rest of the bag at home.

Oh, and thanks for the good wishes everybody:thumbsup:

Well.....I had to par the last hole today to shoot a 79. You guessed it...another 81. Just add that to the list of 80s and 81s that I have piled up over the years.

Incidentally, I stepped away from my shorter irons today, took some of the steep angle away, and had more control over the loft and the ball shape. Thank you very much guys.

Have you never broken 80 before?

Thankfully for the last three years I have broken 80 three or four times a year. I have only done it once this year so far. My best score ever was a 74, and I was playing 3 times a week that particular summer.

I'd take an 81, I parred 18 and shot an 86.

That's after having to run home mid round and chase a skunk that had a yogurt container stuck on his head out of the yard.

Never broke 80..

:lolabove: That is a legitimate distraction.

I know we all fixate on particular scores because that's the way golf is, but I hear a lot of pros (and their sports psyche guys) talking about one shot at a time and their best rounds coming when they're unaware of their score. Try hard to simply play shots appropriate for the hole and your ability, rather than focusing on the number. I realize it's much easier said than done, but the only way to truly get in "flow" is focus on the task at hand, which at any point in the round is the upcoming shot. Golf is difficult enough without the pressure we heap upon ourselves by coming up with these magic numbers.

Sorry if I sound overly preachy, but this post is from pure experience. It has taken me a long time to focus on the shot before me as opposed to the myriad of other variables around me. I've actually quit writing down my scores during the round (I make playing partners do it, or if alone, I do it after the round by thinking through each hole, which is a very good mental exercise). It has helped me immensely. Most won't have to go that far because they aren't the mental midget that I am.

I want to ask this to everyone. If you could have a brand new free set of clubs what brand would you get?

I say Ping or Taylor made.
