Norman was great, but I can probably rattle off about 5 majors that he should've won, but fell apart at the end.

the groove excuse is lame. Norman could've played with any club he wanted. It's his own fault he was playing that Tour Edition crap.
Yet, Norman was beaten by 2 players in majors using what later were deemed to be illegal clubs that gave an unfair advantage...... Ping Eye 2 wedges made from 1985-89.

Pretty sure clubs with those grooves were Grandfathered in as part of the Ping lawsuit.

I know without a shadow of a doubt that square grooves had zero to do with Bob Tway holing out a bunker shot.

They were grandfathered in for several years, and then Ping later agreed to a settlement which made them no longer legal.

I didn't say that Tway holed out due to the grooves , but I would bet that they helped him from that thick, heavy rough by at least one stroke somewhere, some time during the week.

Now you're just reaching.

I don't care how great the ending the was last week, I'm finding infinite amounts more joy in watching the lowly Traveler's Championship than I did watching that turd of an event last week that the USGA likes to call the US Open. Better course, better setup, and thank God, CBS gives us Jim Nantz instead of Joe Buck.

Also, since Doozer, Arky and I are the only ones that don't shoot sub 75s on here, can all you experts tell me how much better the ball makes in his prime Tiger and Mickelson around the greens compared to the other all time greats that played with wound balls and in some cases, featheries?

I think the game is actually harder around the greens with the newer balls. It used to be a lot easier to just throw it at the flag and spin the bejeezus out of a balata ball. Guys like Phil and Tiger figure out how the ball will react and just hit whatever shot they need.

I have seen all the best players play in person since going to my first pro tournament in 1965. That includes as far back as near the end of Hogan and Snead. I think that today's players are much better around the greens due to 2 reasons. Practice and state of the art agronomy. As far as the balls, pros get used to whatever and adapt. The newer balls are very consistent .

Played 27 holes today. 39, 45, 39 for each 9. Still need to figure out how to duplicate my good shots. 4-5 chunk shots are killing me as I could have gone 35-40-35 for one hell of a day. Only the 2nd time out this year though as golf has gotten expensive!

I woke up (unintentionally) at 4:30 and saw Lingmerth went out in 29, so I got up to see if I would witness history.....should have stayed in bed.

Reason #134 why this is my least favorite major to watch.

This major beats the US Open for me. Last year's US wasn't as bad, but it's probably been the only one I could stomach in the last decade.

1. Masters
2. PGA
3. The Open
4. US Open

Really? I thought it was universally accepted that the PGA = Australian Open.

No I just made it up. For funsies.

Yes, for real. It's typically set up to reward great golf. Kinda how golf should be played. The US Open is designed to possibly screw you over no matter the shot you take.

I know lots of people have that complaint about the U.S. Open but I usually love it, this year not withstanding.

I guess the thing for me is, I don't think I could name one PGA Championship that I found memorable after it was over. Can't really say that about any of the other three. As GA said earlier, most of the time it feels like any other run of the mill tourney and wouldn't seem like a major if they didn't have to remind us every year.

What makes the tournament is that it's arguably the best field all year.

It doesn't help that it's held right in the middle of NFL preseason and a few weeks before the NFL and college football regular seasons start. By then the sports world is all ready for football.

Yea you're a casual fan, so I get it. But the field is stacked and the course is played like the course was built

A couple of PGA's that stand out in my mind are the Shaun Micheel 7 iron shot to the 18th to win , the Tiger/Bob May playoff, the Rich Beem win over Tiger with a 5 wood shot stiff for an eagle, the David Toms win with the 5 wood hole in one, the Y.E. Yang win over Tiger with a hybrid shot stiff on 18, the Dustin Johnson grounding his club in a bunker on 18 to lose by a shot, the Bob Tway bunker holeout on 18 to beat Norman, and the Michelsen up and down for birdie on a par 5 18th at Baltusrol to win.

If you can't remember Yang going toe to toe with Tiger, DJ at Whistling Straits and the ensuing playoff, Rory's Sunday 66 in '12, Lefty tapping the Nicklaus plaque at Baltusrol and then hitting that flop shot to win, Tiger in '00 or the DLIII moment after his win honoring his dad through the rainbow, I don't really know how to call yourself a fan. Tiger pointing his ball into the hole is shown with every Tiger montage ever created.
