The Golf Thread

Yeah, wow. Players are taking their champion exemptions to play the Open. Wow.
I meant wow that someone was picking Big John. I am glad to see the former champions are in the field. The last 3 winners at Troon are in the same pairing.....Calc, Leonard, and Hamilton.

also, I'd argue that no player suffered more from Tiger proofing golf courses than Justin Leonard. He was never a long bomber, but he was really good at almost every other aspect.

I hope he can keep it together 2 more days.

He's played well and really got to good side of the draw by playing early today. It's brutal out there right now. Guy I know is right on the cut line with 9 holes to play. If he breaks +2 on the back coming in, he'll have played well.

My golf group went to Troon a few years ago. Wind was 35-40 mph but no rain and the best score in our group of 8 was 42 on the back 9. 5 of the 8 played college golf (4 D1). It was brutal.

That points out what I have always said. People who haven't played with a touring pro have no idea how good they are. It is like hopping onto a basketball court with Jordan in his prime, or trying to hit Nolan Ryan.

That's really true. People also don't realize how crazy the course setup is for a PGA Tour event. It barely resembles the courses we play on the weekends.

One of the guys I went with grew up playing in national Jr tourneys and college against Phil. This guy is older than me. He said growing up Phil's skill set was on a different level than everyone one else, his ball made a completely different sound. My friend was a very accomplished player finishing extremely high in the NCAA tournament so this isn't just some weekend hack saying this.

I currently play with a few mid to lower level tour pros occasionally. The difference between their ability and the elite guys is stark. There isn't that much difference between mid/lower PGA guys and Web.com players at all.

I was fortunate enough to watch Fowler, Spieth, Uhlein, Emma Talley (just turned pro, former US Amateur Champ and NCAA champ) as well as a few others come through the junior ranks. Their skill set and drive was a different level. That said, I also worked minor league baseball for a few years and the footwork, hand eye coordination and skill set of those guys vs those I played with and watched growing up, some of which even played D1 ball, was mind blowing.

What was the high score, and was it you?

My expectation is to shoot in the high 40's, rarely do I meet, never have I exceeded.
