The Golf Thread

There's not a weirder sport/game on the planet. I've been a good off the tee, great chipper guy most my life. So far this year? Deadly iron player and I've sunk more long putts(15+ ft) in the past three months than the last three years combined.

One would think I'd be playing my best ever right? Nope. I've still got decent distance off the tee (for anyone not named Bama) but it can go anywhere. I've never ever gone left. Til now! Chipping has become average. So weird.

that's the game of golf...unless you've got hours a week to practice. Consistency is hard to maintain

Agreed. My point is that I grew up playing basketball, baseball and tennis.

In basketball, I was a good shooter and even better defender. Ballhandling, rebounding and driving the lane were always weaknesses. It's not like sometimes I just magically had the ability to do any of the three better than usual.

In baseball, well I could field. Perhaps one could argue I had a better arm at certain times, but never enough to argue it became a strength. I certainly never became a hitter. Ever.

In tennis I could create shots and had a good volley/net game and a decent enough backhand. I never magically had a good serve or had a devastating forehand.

But I've played close to 20 rounds this year and my irons have never been this consistent. I've never dropped putts like this (although with putts I could arguee the SuperStroke grip is making the difference now that I think about it)

those are nice, but I would do solid White....

I looked at them the last time I was in the Bookstore, in Knoxville.

I've started wearing the Ecco Hybrids and really like them

Man it's hard to believe that it's been 10 years since Lefty blew the 18th hole at Winged Foot. I still remember watching that whole thing yelling "What are you doing?"

Was coming to post these. I typically don't like the feel of Nikes, but I might give these a spin

I must be the only one who refuses to pay over $100 for golf shoes. I typically search for discontinued models 2 or 3 years old. So maybe in 2018 ill see if these are cheap enough by then. Lol

One of my favorite videos is the guy who takes only his putter to that hole a shoots it lower than Van de Velde did.

I've got to go find that.

The difference between Phil and Van de Velde is that Phil just made 1 bad choice. Van de Velde had 3 chances to make a good decision and did the stupi thing every time.

Do we have an official US Open thread?

Who you got?

Speith
Day
Stenson
Mcilroy
Johnson

*would love to see Lefty in there (rooting for Phil)

It's The Open week. Not much chatter.

I also just noticed the PGA is about 2 weeks earlier this year.
British Open at Troon this year. I remember Palmer won there in early 60's and Weiskopf in 70's, and Watson in 80's. Since then, we have had Mark Calcavecchia, Justin Leonard, and Todd Hamilton win there. Not huge names have won the last 3 there, and I believe their only major wins, although not sure on Leonard. Who you got?

I'll go the cheap route and go with the hot name of Dustin Johnson, followed by Jason Day.

Which means neither will probably make the cut.

I looked up Leonard, and he also won an NCAA Individual, a U.S. Amateur, a Players, and lost in a playoff for another British Open, and a PGA. So, one major, but he was knocking around more than once.

I am trying to come up with a darkhorse first time major winner. I'll let you know once I check out the field. Danny Lee maybe.

Edit: checked out the field. Andy Sullivan from England won 3 times last year on the European Tour, and finished in the top 4 or 5 at the Scottish Open last week. Henrik Stenson rounding into form, but not the best putter. I'm not sure how slick the greens are at Troon. Can't rule out Branden Grace either. He has played well in majors lately.
