The Golf Thread

I looked up Leonard, and he also won an NCAA Individual, a U.S. Amateur, a Players, and lost in a playoff for another British Open, and a PGA. So, one major, but he was knocking around more than once.

I am trying to come up with a darkhorse first time major winner. I'll let you know once I check out the field. Danny Lee maybe.

Edit: checked out the field. Andy Sullivan from England won 3 times last year on the European Tour, and finished in the top 4 or 5 at the Scottish Open last week. Henrik Stenson rounding into form, but not the best putter. I'm not sure how slick the greens are at Troon. Can't rule out Branden Grace either. He has played well in majors lately.
Like I said Tuesday, Stenson is rounding into form, PLUS he was the best putter this week. The greens weren't slick, which helped him I think.

Stenson was a machine; a terminator today. Very impressive.

Both he and Phil played amazing. Nice to see a head to head match like that rather than a win by attrition.

So who ya got in PGA Championship? Rory seems to play well in this event so I guess I'm banking on something more to overcome his putting woes.

I always look at who has been hot recently, and at past winners at the golf course. I went to the 1967 U.S. Open, and watched Nicklaus outduel Palmer (top 2 in the game at that time). They played the last 2 days together, and I followed all 36 holes.

In 1980, Nicklaus won again by beating Aoki (PGA I think). Sometime in the early 1990's, Lee Janzen beat Payne Stewart in the Open there. Then about 10 years ago Mickelson won his 1st major (I think) at Baltusrol in the PGA. I think he beat Steve Elkington and Thomas Bjorn.

The winners and runners up seem to be upper echelon players, not no names. Janzen won 2 Opens, but he was a plodder, like Andy North.

Give me some time to think. If nothing has changed, the last 2 holes are par 5's.

EDIT: I looked up all these tournaments to refresh my memory, and Nicklaus's 1980 win was an Open .

Okay, I have Jon Rahm and possibly Tony Finau as my darkhorses. Furyk and Kuchar as medium color horses, and Mickelson, Dustin Johnson (if not exhausted from playing Canadian Open last week after British), as best chances. I like Sergio to be in the hunt.

I think nobody reaches 17 in 2 shots if played at full length, and most can probably reach 18, if the tee is where it has been in the past. I need to look up the length of the last 2 holes now, but John Daly was the first to ever reach 17 during the last major there. It was about 630 then. There are some mean bunkers across the fairway , which may force a layup and a long third shot, if you drive in the rough.

Nicklaus reached the last hole in 2 with a one iron when he won, and Mickelson was just off the green with a 4 wood, when he won there. These are from a severe downhill lie. It is quite a bit downhill off the tee, and back up the hill to the green. Similar to 18 at Augusta, but longer, and your drive winds up on the downhill slope. I believe there is a creek crossing the fairway at the bottom of the hill on 18, and it runs to the pond at number 4, which is a par 3 with a stone wall in front.

Happy for Walker and Stenson before him. Those guys have played at a high level in recent years and deserved having a major on the resume.

And I agree, Jason Day is a badass.

Also, FWIW, Ping G irons are badass. Literally added 20 yards to my carry and go pin seeking a lot with a higher trajectory that still works well into the wind.

72 Grad is glad he didn't venture into the zone for the pool...

Great tournament and honestly, the PGA did everything as well as possible given the weather. They didn't crap all over themselves and try to rush things and they alleviated unnecessary/unwarranted bad breaks by being ballsy enough to ok the idea of lift, clean and place.

The PGA absolutely **** all over themselves. They could have gone out yesterday in groups of 3 on both tees and finished round 3 around the time of the rain. Instead they tried 2 on one tee and basically had to play 2 rounds today.

It doesn't really matter though because it ended up being a great finish and overall a good day of golf.

Meh. That would have been boring and taken away the excitement. Playing 36 for these guys isn't a big deal at all
