The Golf Thread

I believe that the hybrid hook thing is that many have too much offset, and a soft tip wood shaft. Some are .335 tip wood shafts, some are .355 taper tip iron shafts, and some are standard .370 iron shafts. Getting the right combo is a trial and error process.

I have a Taylor Made Slider 22 degree that looks like a small wood head, and an Adams 24 degree that looks ..........well different, more like a thick iron head. Even though it says they are only 2 degrees apart, there is a 12-15 yard difference in them, a different feel, and ball flight.

I agree completely. 10-15 years after they got popular, people still can't decide whether to set them up and swing them like irons or woods.

I found a Titleist 18 degree hybrid in 2011. I hit it really well. I'm deathly afraid to ever trade it for anything.

I've played Country Club of Bristol, I like it, nice course, well taken care of. Greens were fast and challenging, but it was a fun course to play.

I've never gotten to play it. I am up in the tri-cities area a lot so I was interested in playing some of their nicer courses. I was able to play Blackthorn Club not too long ago. I've heard the Virginian is nice, but private of course. I'd love to be able to get on at The Olde Farm.

Scott Stallings, from Oak Ridge, is tied for 2nd at the TPC John Deere after three rounds. A lot of the big names are not playing in the states this week, getting ready for The Open, but it's still nice to see a local guy doing well on tour.

I'd looooove to get on The Olde Farm. Supposdley Manning is a member there or was? A girl I work withs family owns several courses around here. Crocketts Ridge and Country Club of Bristol being two of them. She knows people who work at The Olde Farm and has told me about Peyton being there.

Yeah, it said there are at least 2 former presidents, NFL players, and I believe even Michael Jordan are members. I think the initiation fees are like $50,000 or $100,000 though lol.

I saw where Country Club of Bristol was having a meeting to decide the future of the club. I wonder what that was about.

Hey everyone. I've been reading the FF on here for years (with an occasional post). I decided to look around today and found this forum. I love the game, it's the basis for my user name. I'll be going down to Alabama this weekend for 4 rounds on the RTJ Golf trail with a group of 8. If you have the chance to play any of them, I'd highly recommend it. Anyway, I look forward to conversations.

My group has been to the Ross Bridge/Oxmoor courses twice, and that's a great destination. We are hitting Capitol Hill in two weeks for the first time. Hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

Not sure I'll ask Monday and see if she knows. Didn't they recently go semi-private. Could be regarding that.

I was able to find a news article about the meeting. It just detailed how they are struggling financially to operate the club and need help. It said the current owners are spending $20k out of their own pocket every month to keep the club running. They were asking for suggestions and recommendations to increase revenue and membership. They currently have 157 members, need at least 200, but want 250.

Also, they want to rebrand the club, which includes potentially changing the name. They also stressed that the club is not private, but open to the public.

a number of Upper East Tennessee clubs are struggling financially. Graysburg almost didn't survive a year and a half ago. So glad it did.

I've heard Crockett's Ridge is struggling, but can neither confirm nor deny.

Andrew Johnson is a complete roller coaster. They've been on the brink of shutting down so many times I lost count.

Heard Pine Oaks was struggling this year as well.

It is always sad to hear how bad the local clubs are struggling. We do not have too many quality tracks in that area. I played in high school and Andrew Johnson was our home course. A lot of memories there, but the owners do not reinvest into the course. They usually have the greens in good shape, but the bunkers and fairways are nonexistent.

Another Greeneville course, Nolichuckey View (Rivertrace), is also undergoing financial problems. I believe the course was just recently sold again and the future of the club is uncertain. A lot of prime real estate in that area, so many think it'll be sold and redeveloped for residential use.

I am really close to joining a club in Knoxville just so I'll have somewhere to play with nice, consistent course conditions and not congested with golfers all the time. The more popular, public courses in Knox are typically such a hassle to play due to the crowd and time it takes to complete a round.

Also, Rick Lamb, a former Tennessee Vol golfer, finished third today in the TPC John Deere. It's his highest finish on the PGA Tour. Glad to see a Vol on the leaderboard, wish we had more guys on tour.

River Trace is closed. They had an auction. Had a bid for $600,000 and one for $650,000. The owners didn't accept. All 18 greens are dead.

I never play Pine Oaks when I get home, and I'll only occasionally play Buffalo. The only problem with Pine Oaks though is that JC refuses to spend any money on it whatsoever. Never have. The layout is actually brilliant. And the views of the mountains are breathtaking, especially the back nine. But the course conditions are always pitiful.

When's the last time you've been. It's looked incredible this year. They fixed that section of cart path down to the par 3 that was a death trap as well. I've not been in about month or so but it's looked the best out of anywhere I've been this year. Was planning on going back this week.

Edit: Now that I think of it they were actually doing a lot of work to it this past year. There were several months it seemed to be cart path only. Had dirt piled up on the sides of the cart path it looked like while they were working on it.

last time I was home I noticed the dirt piles. I honestly can't tell you the last time I played there. I've been in the Army 8 years, I can only recall playing the Jokes once. So we'll assume I've forgotten one of the times and I've actually played it twice. I'll be in a couple of days. I'll at least give it a look when I drive by to go to Buffalo Mountain Park.

Yeah definitely give it a look, I wasn't a big Pine Oaks fan either, but I've really enjoyed it this year.

I really like The Ridge course at Oxmoor, but I'll have to say The Judge and The Legislator @ Capitol Hill probably just moved into my top 3 RTJ courses. They are both beautiful and challenging (played from Orange tees) courses. The Senator is also a good course, but it's not very memorable- lots of very similar holes with blind tee shots over mounds. There my be a total of 4 trees on The Senator, so prepare for HOT!! Also, here's a cool drone tour of the Judge, made by the guy we rent from.

Did you go to West Greene?

Graysburg will forever be my home course. I just love that place. The original 18 (Knobs and Fodder Stack) match up against anywhere imo. The layout is absolutely perfect. You can bomb it all day if you desire, but it still requires precision into some of the greens and the undulations can get you every day, no matter how much you play. I have five recorded rounds in the 70s. 3 come from there. (one comes from twin Creeks and I spent more time in the wrong fairways on the back nine than I did anywhere else, so I really don't count it).

Andrew Johnson is a fun track, but it's not Graysburg. I do like it better than whatever River Trace is called these days.

I thought that A.J. was West Greene's home course. I was a member at Link Hills for maybe 30 years, then River Trace for a few. Now I go to Graysburg, if and when the mood strikes.

Yes, I was almost burnt out on it after high school. We played there so much. Played a lot at Baileyton, River Trace, and Twin Creeks. Also got to play Buffalo Mountain and Red Tail.

I heard Link Hills underwent a big renovation and now is hoping to increase their membership. Graysburg is just the best overall course for the money around.

I really want to join Holston Hills in Knoxville. But I'm young and it's a lot to pay a county club price just for golf and no spouse or kids.

River Trace (Nolichucky View) is closed. Plus, all 18 greens are dead from apparent chemical overdose.
Edit: I meant to add that I don't care for A.J., or the last 9 holes they opened at Graysburg.
