The Golf Thread

I've finally decided to get my first actual golf lessons, first one is tomorrow. It's been frustrating trying to play only a handful of times a year (busy with kids, work, etc), and I decided that I either needed to give it up or commit to lessons and practice to make it more enjoyable. When I connect, I can hit it plenty far, and I have a decent wedge game, but my consistency is terrible -- last weekend I developed a crazy pull/hook, which is very unusual for me as my common miss is a slice. I just need some good foundational analysis. Wish me luck!
It's a hard game.

Golf definitely takes commitment and a lot of practice to be consistent. Make sure your instructor gets you on video. It helped me out a lot just by seeing my swing on video. Actually seeing my swing and its flaws helped me understand what I was doing wrong. Good luck!

79 Centennial, with 2 7s on the card. I cannot putt lately.
I haven't had a good day putting in the last 40 years. I grew up in an era of slow greens, and used a wristy pop stroke. I felt like I was almost rolling the ball with my right hand.

As greens got faster, and I read about putting with the big muscles, and taking the right hand out, I have struggled since. I am going back to putting mostly with my right hand. If you will notice, the pros try to eliminate the right hand with the claw grip, crosshand, etc. I have decided to putt like a 14 year old again.

I was having a good round at Avalon, but the heat made us head to the clubhouse early. I was 5 over at the turn. I would play one hole fantastic with a birdie opportunity, but the next I'd hit a huge slice and lose my ball. Oh how I love the game of golf.

We did start with video. He actually said the basics of my swing were fine (grip, stance, posture). First week, I'm limiting my backswing (which was going way beyond parallel, left arm breaking almost to 90), getting my right side+hip through, and finishing more with my left arm in a box+butt of club to target. He made me swing with just the left arm, which is tough! I can only practice swing so much in the basement, ready to hit the range!

Funny, that's the one thing I'm doing fairly well. I love the new fatty grip (SS), really letting my shoulders /upper back do the work. Made one of my best putts in a while Saturday...20 ft breaker that went around, down, out, and fell back in. Those are fun.

Anyone hit the Ping G Crossover? Decided to go with a hybrid this year and haven't been a fan. Picked up a crossover today for 60 bucks, figured for that it was worth a shot.

Hybrids are much easier to hit than long irons, and don't carry the stigma of 9 and 11 woods. Also, they don't usually balloon the ball as badly as a high numbered wood can.

I can't hit hybrids to save my life. I have to either get a fairway wood or long iron

You hit long irons better than hybrids? That's surprising. I'm a terrible player but even I can hit those hybrids pretty well. Very easy to get up in the air, even if they don't always go straight :)

It took a while but I just got to the point I was hitting the long irons better. For the longest time they were both the same. Get it in the air and I'm walking to the next fairway...

I hit long irons much better, no idea why, but going back to playing as a kid they've been a comfort zone for me

Hey everyone. I've been reading the FF on here for years (with an occasional post). I decided to look around today and found this forum. I love the game, it's the basis for my user name. I'll be going down to Alabama this weekend for 4 rounds on the RTJ Golf trail with a group of 8. If you have the chance to play any of them, I'd highly recommend it. Anyway, I look forward to conversations.

Play Limestone Springs near Oneonta, Alabama

I'll keep that one in mind next time I go to Talladega. I usually try to squeeze in a round on Thursday or Friday before the race.

Awesome course, get off of interstate 59 at Ashville exit and go west to Oneonta. The course is between there and Locust Fork. Probably 20-30 mins off i-59. It's absolutely gorgeous. Check out their website and pictures. It's very highly rated by golf digest.

I went through the same thing but finally found something that worked. For the longest time, it felt like every hybrid I tried to hit was going snaphook off the golf course. Once you find the right one, you'll never pull a 3 iron again.

It's 5 woods for me. Love those things

I think my problem is poor shaft selection, i mess around with GigaGolf and send them back if I don't like them.

I love the 4H but the launch is too much, 200 yards I find score wise I am better hitting 4 iron and wedging it in.

I believe that the hybrid hook thing is that many have too much offset, and a soft tip wood shaft. Some are .335 tip wood shafts, some are .355 taper tip iron shafts, and some are standard .370 iron shafts. Getting the right combo is a trial and error process.

I have a Taylor Made Slider 22 degree that looks like a small wood head, and an Adams 24 degree that looks ..........well different, more like a thick iron head. Even though it says they are only 2 degrees apart, there is a 12-15 yard difference in them, a different feel, and ball flight.
