The Golf Thread

I’m positive he committed a traffic violation, but I’m not even sure he was a smart mouth to the cop or anything. There was an espn reporter right there apparently and only thing he mentioned Scottie saying was asking him for help.
I’d bet that he’s used to security letting courtesy cars through at PGA events and he probably made an entitled move not realizing it was an actual cop and scene of an investigation. A whole lot of bad circumstances coming together.

Yea, I’d guess he didn’t really understand what was going on with the incident having just occurred and expected to be let through

Yep… I came to that realization probably while you were typing that.

I don’t doubt that Scheffler may have acted entitled, but crazy to get booked on something like that.

It's not like I know him personally, but Scheffler doesn't give me the impression that he would mouth off to a cop.

So basically he thought he could go around traffic. The cop tried to stop him, when he didn’t (this is me assuming) the cop tried to grab his door handle to get him to stop. Sheffler continued to drive for a few more feet causing the officer to be “dragged”.

I don’t think it was necessarily an entitled move. I read somewhere that the players had been told by the PGA that they could enter the property and get around the traffic situation. Other players had just come through and been waived through by security/police. He was in a courtesy car and to your point, probably thought it was a security guard on top of all that. Agree that it was a whole lot of bad circumstances coming together.

The lack of awareness by the cops is stunning. If it’s like every other PGA event I’ve been to, those courtesy cars are a bunch of BMW X5’s that are obviously not privately owned. It just shouldn’t have taken more than 2-3 questions for them to yell at him a little and let him go about his day.

All of this.

How many fatal car accidents have happened near a PGA event? The last thing the cop was thinking about was if the car going around traffic was a professional golfer.

Good Lord… of course. But it clearly wasn’t a situation where a guy needed to be ripped out of his car, cuffed and perp walked in the middle of the scene. Yell at him and then go fry the bigger fish.

The cop knew within seconds what he was dealing with and decided to carry on his adrenaline rush and flex on the guy in the BMW.

He was driving a PGA courtesy car.

Like a previous poster said, typically law enforcement and event workers allow courtesy cars to navigate through traffic to get to the course.

If he didn't consider the possibility that the expensive car going around traffic near the entrance of the PGA Championship might be driven by a professional golfer, I'm not sure how the officer in question achieved the rank of detective.

The fact that Scheffler drug the cop even a few yards is where this causes pause for me. Is it possible the cop was flexing? Yea. Seems just as likely Scheffler was trying to flex. Definitely seems like Scheffler didn’t try to listen to the cops directing traffic.

Wait and see what happens I guess.

I bet we’re going to find out that he was “dragged” because he reached for a moving door handle as it went by.

I don’t believe the officer was really “drug” also I saw somewhere they said he stopped in around 20 feet? Even at a slow rate of speed when you consider reaction time, he’s thinking this is event staff and all of a sudden they lunge at your vehicle, I’m not sure how much faster he could have really reacted.

Jeff Darlington is a good journalist. I can’t fathom he wouldn’t explain it that way if it’s the case.
First off… I’m obviously guessing here.

Darlington said the cop “attached himself” to the car. I’m giving the cop the benefit of the doubt that he wasn’t dumb enough to dive onto the hood. Grabbing a door handle and holding on while the car rolls 20-30 feet is the only thing that makes sense to me.
