The Golf Thread

I made the mistake of practicing today for an extended period of time for the first time in several months. I machine gunned so many balls that I could barely stand up straight when it was over.

I've found that I have much better luck if I just hit 60 or so each time I hit the driving range.

If I hit more than that, i go to the practice green and chipping area in between. If i just constantly hit balls I get bored and start getting lazy and screwing myself up.

And for those interested, I'm about 90% fully comfortable with my wedges again. Not only was I bringing the club further up in my stance, but I was evidently also standing too far away from the ball. It feels as if I'm almost over top of it now, but they are straight as an arrow and back in the distance range I'm accustomed to. Occasionally though if I get in a hurry I'll still set up wrong and lose those 15 yards. I once again thank GA, BPV and whomever else offered advise during my panic attack.

being that the Ryder Cup is in his home state, i can't say that i blame him.
I completely agree with him.

Play to your strong suits and reach for your goals.

I think the USGA has gotten so absurd in their Open setups that the tournament is turned somewhat into a farce. Taking away the short game by keeping unplayable rough around the greens has just bastardized the game. Up and down should be difficult, but not impossible.

I love watching the tournament and can't wait for it to get here, but it has lost some luster for me. I think the Masters is now the best tourney because the best overall players are likely to be identified there.

i'm actually going to be out of town and more than likely away from a TV for the whole weekend and i'm not really sad to say that i'm going to miss it. i'll probably be able to catch some of the NBA finals though.

like you said, the course has become ridiculous and i really don't enjoy watching golf on NBC.

well BPV, I hate copying people, but I hit the J33 today with the same Aldila NV85 shaft you mentioned and loved it. It felt much more fluid than the Nickents I hit and was a little nicer than the Bobby Jones. It was also a lot cheaper than the Bobby Jones. I will be picking it up tomorrow after I play 18

I absolutely love the club and copying someone from a message board hardly qualifies. I was surprised by the club when I first hit it and it's what I bought. I don't really care about brand and who hits it, as my loyalty the the Bridgestone and my MacGregor irons would suggest.

Speaking of the Nickent, just ordered the driver with Aldila VS Proto 80 shaft. Ordered the Titleist D2 with same shaft. Sent the TM Burner back because I just couldn't make it work for me.

I hit the D2 last year and loved it. I'm pretty sure I already spoke about it before in this thread. Never hit a Nickent driver, but they are quickly rising in the golf world.

As for not being brand loyal, I have Titleist, Callaway, Adams, Bridgestone (as of tomorrow), Ping and Cleveland products that can wind up in my bag. If Tour Edge hadn't finally gotten pricey, I would still be hitting their drivers. I loved the Bazooka driver from i guess about 8 years ago.

did you get the 4dx...

I've hit the 3dx square, and had the same impressions and results as the Nike Sumo Square..
I just didn't like the look at address, and the sound

Good Luck, I'm thinking the Titelist will win out

only brand i'm partial to is footjoy, and that's just shoes/gloves mostly.

i'll hit whatever clubs feel the best.

for whatever reason, I stick to Titleist balls and FootJoy Classics Dry shoes. Just recently got away from Titleist putter but have stuck with Titleist wedges. Guess I'm more Acushnet guy than I thought before typing this.

Ugly round at the St Jude today on a not very tough course IMO. There was some wind and tight pins, but generally everyone sucked who was on top yesterday.

Actually Southwind was toughened up a few years ago after being really easy. They converted a par 5 to a 4 (to make it par 70) and changed out the greens.

Now most players consider it one of the tougher stops on tour and I think one of the par 3's is one of the tougher holes on tour.

John Huston going nuts with a 29 under or something really started the turnaround of Southwind.

I played it last fall and didn't think it was ver tough

Shot a piss poor round of 86 today in miserable heat, finally got the driver swing going and failed miserably at the rest of the game, damn game never ceases to piss me off and excite me at the same time. Leaving for some beach golf in the morning, see you guys in about a week.
