Hi everybody! The Mrs. and I are back on the mainland, but I thought I'd post a quick summary of the golfing we did in the Pineapple State. We played a total of 4 times, twice on the Big Island and twice on Maui. I actually hit it pretty well for the most part, shooting 3 honest rounds in the mid to low 90s and one in the 80s, and got to enjoy some beautiful scenery even when I didn't. Starting with Hawaii and moving on to Maui, the courses were:
Hualalai--a Nicklaus course that is home to the PGA's Mastercard, this was a surprisingly playable tract laid out in the middle of the lava fields on the Big Island. The fairways are wide, which is important, as almost all of them are bordered by volcanic rock, which plays as a lateral hazard all over the course. It is a very good course with incredible views of both the Pacific and the volcanic landscape.
Maunu Lani (North)--we were actually scheduled to play the more famous South, which is home to the Senior Skins, but due to a mix-up, wound up on the North. I carded my best round here, going 43, 45. The newly crowned Mrs. Cotton shot 44, 38. Please note I beat her on the front. That is all.
Wailea Gold--a Robert Trent Jones layout, this was just a great course. Elevation changes, doglegs, and bunkers make you play it creatively, using every club in the bag. As a destination course, it was second only to it's slightly more famous cousin on Maui.
Kapalua (Plantation)--the experience here was almost unbelievable. To stretch a world class golf course over scenery that beautiful is almost miraculous. The course lives up to its reputation. It is difficult but playable in the way great golf courses should be, and the views from the Maui mountains are breathtaking, even for somebody who doesn't really get his breath taken by views from mountains. It is a reason to take the long flight to the 50th state by itself, and that is probably enough said.
