Edwin Watts in Memphis is having a ridiculous sale to close out old mechandise. I just picked up an R7 TP 5 wood in the plastic for $99.

And I'm going to set a new record in the morning. I have a 7:08 tee time - earliest ever.

Where is that? Empire needs a 5 wood...

Shot my best 9 ever today, a 37, 2 birdies, and 3 bogey's..
Almost birdie 18, but missed a 8ft downhill putt..

Kenny Perry wins yet again in sudden death. and that wasn't even the best story today.

Rick Price won the Nationwide Players Cup today by shooting a bogey in the sudden death playoff. with that win, he all but locked up spot on the money list Top 25 to earn his PGA Tour card. i believe at 40 years old he will be a rookie next year, having spent his last 9 years on the Nationwide. good story.

I played yesterday at North Creek. It is a short track, not much fun. They do have some talent in the beverage cart. Which is a BIG plus. Shot a 41 from the tip with a quad on 10.

Played Quail Ridge today. They have let that course go way downhill. It was a nice day with temps in the 80's.

I'm selling two sets of sticks.
Cleveland CG4's in good condition with S300 shafts. 4-P New grips
Tommy Armour 845fs true temper regular shafts. original grips... good condition. 3-P
make me an offer
I really want the set of used adams idea pro combos...and I need to raise the 3 benjamins.

The wife and kids are out of town all week, so I will get my summer golf in over the next six days. Shot an 82 in my "welcome back" round over the weekend. It was a 44-38 effort. It took me a while to get off the tee like I needed to.

I was a little upset because I missed a birdie putt on number 15 that led to two straight bogeys. I was staring 44-35 in the eyes.

Hi everybody! The Mrs. and I are back on the mainland, but I thought I'd post a quick summary of the golfing we did in the Pineapple State. We played a total of 4 times, twice on the Big Island and twice on Maui. I actually hit it pretty well for the most part, shooting 3 honest rounds in the mid to low 90s and one in the 80s, and got to enjoy some beautiful scenery even when I didn't. Starting with Hawaii and moving on to Maui, the courses were:

Hualalai--a Nicklaus course that is home to the PGA's Mastercard, this was a surprisingly playable tract laid out in the middle of the lava fields on the Big Island. The fairways are wide, which is important, as almost all of them are bordered by volcanic rock, which plays as a lateral hazard all over the course. It is a very good course with incredible views of both the Pacific and the volcanic landscape.

Maunu Lani (North)--we were actually scheduled to play the more famous South, which is home to the Senior Skins, but due to a mix-up, wound up on the North. I carded my best round here, going 43, 45. The newly crowned Mrs. Cotton shot 44, 38. Please note I beat her on the front. That is all.

Wailea Gold--a Robert Trent Jones layout, this was just a great course. Elevation changes, doglegs, and bunkers make you play it creatively, using every club in the bag. As a destination course, it was second only to it's slightly more famous cousin on Maui.

Kapalua (Plantation)--the experience here was almost unbelievable. To stretch a world class golf course over scenery that beautiful is almost miraculous. The course lives up to its reputation. It is difficult but playable in the way great golf courses should be, and the views from the Maui mountains are breathtaking, even for somebody who doesn't really get his breath taken by views from mountains. It is a reason to take the long flight to the 50th state by itself, and that is probably enough said.

A couple of notes on island golf in general:

--I have played a couple of courses with "grained" greens, mostly in South Florida, in the past. Until you have seen a put break 3' uphill into the wind, you don't really understand what the grain of those island grasses can do (or at least I didn't.)

--Hawaii is a windy place. A very windy place. After the first round I remembered that I knew how to punch an iron, and that helped.

--All of the courses seemed to like short part 3s. With the wind and elevation changes, I quickly learned that short didn't necessarily mean "easy."

--I think I might have finally figured out why I carry my L wedge.

--I played well enough on some pretty tough courses to get excited about golf again. I am actually looking forward to going to see my neighborhood pro and take a lesson while I'm playing well. I guess golf in paradise can do that to you.

For those of you that have a BlackBerry if you go to the axcess shop there is this program called " Links Scorecard" I use it all the time, and love it.

Reading putts on the Big Island will drive you nuts period. No matter what the putt looks like you have to take into account where those 2 huge mountains are in relation to the ocean.

I thought the Plantation was the worst, but then again, it was the first course I played. It is a very different brand of golf than I am used to seeing here.

I played the Plantation course in '95. You bringin it up brings back some good memories from the islands. Good times to be had over there.

Thanks for the update..Sounds like a great time..

It was. There was just enough golf sprinkled in amongst boats and beaches.

Did I mention the joy of blasting a 400 yard drive, verified by the cart GPS? Or knocking it on a 600+ yard par 5 in 2? Or doing it with this view?
