The Great 2022 and Beyond Recession Thread

Right-wingers are always predicting recession when a Democrat is in office: It's an age-old part of their opposition shtick, along with
"oh, crime is terrible," and "our military has got weaker," and "there's too much government spending." It's their opposition thang.

Just to be clear, violent crime has been getting worse right? And most analysis are still predicting a recession

Everyone's a racist
Republicans want to take social security away from the elderly
Republicans don't care about the middle class
Republicans just want tax cuts for rich (this is one of my favorites bc it just exposes how dumb the electorate is. We have a graduated income tax system. Any tax cut will always benefit the highest earners the most bc they will max out at each tier.)

Uh, the gangster's tax cut mainly benefited the wealthy and business--fact. Winners and Losers in the Trump Tax Plan (Published 2017)

It's not that Republicans don't care about the middle class; it's that they don't care about the poor.

Republicans have pushed for cuts to Social Security and Medicare for years. Senator Scott from Florida brought up the idea this year. Bush floated the idea of partially privatizing Social Security---the idea is completely unpopular and went nowhere. How Biden Got Republicans to Run Away From Their Own History

That’s because the wealthy and businesses pay all the taxes. But he did reduce the amount of SALT deductions wealthy liberals were able to make, which has always been a complete scam.

When trump doubled the standard deduction, that benefited the poor more than any other class. But I guess we can still pretend he only cut taxes for the wealthy.

We should privatize, individualize, and eventually end social security in general.

Every tax cut benefits the wealthiest people and business the most. It's a graduated system. Every cut they get the max reduction at every tier. This isn't hard.

Republicans have not tried to reduce SS for those already on it. It's a lie. No grannies under attack. Stop pretending the Dems are any better at this BS. You have zero moral high ground

This illustrates a sad misunderstanding of tax policy. A sad misunderstanding of incremental increased government spending. And a sad misunderstanding of projected SS solvency over the coming decades.

Didn't the GDP fall from 2.6 4th quarter 22 to 2.0 in 1st quarter 23? That's not a positive trend
Eventually there will be a recession. Maybe in 2024, maybe later. But it will be 1,2,3, (or more?) years after the doomsayers here said it would be. And it won't be "great," it will probably be mild.

So delaying a recession by 1-2 years is somehow good and proves the doomsayers wrong?

Are we cycling up for “pay your fair share” of sound bites?

Strong stance knowing that for the last 40 years+, areas in cities that have a MLK Blvd aren’t thriving although the majority continue to vote democrat. Maybe the poor doesn’t care about the poor if they continue to vote for the same results and view outside the front door. Those from the suburbs are not selling their homes to move to the MLK area of the cities because the Democratic led mayors are getting the job done.

You can’t get a tax cut if you’re not paying any taxes.

And Biden wants to block the sun. Any thoughts on that genius idea from Biden?

Did the definition of a recession ever get decided? Last I recall it was defined as 2 consecutive quarters of negative GDP but then that was said not to be true so how is it defined now?

Not much of a recession compared to the one Repubs gave us in 2008. Besides, according to the numbers, it's already over.

To think, it used to be the Repub Party that understood business, doesn't look that way these days.

It's a well-known fact--to most people, anyway--that big corporations pay little or nothing in taxes. Republicans always want to lower the
corporate tax rate--but the rate is mostly irrelevant as the corporations are quite skilled at taking advantage of various loopholes/writeoffs/liabilities to eliminate all or most of their tax burden.

Privatize Social Security? Don't hold your breath on that one....

This is just nonsensical. It's like saying trees or buildings don't pay taxes. Of course, not. People pay taxes. Every employee of that corporation is taxed and the more money they make the more they pay. Every owner of that corporation is taxed and the more they earn the more they pay. Why do you believe the owner's of corporations should pay an additional tax on top of the taxes that you pay?

Yes, it should be privatized. If you listen to anyone talk about social security they will boldly proclaimed they've "earned it" because they "paid in". So why not give them an individual and private account that they can use as they desire?

Not sure you understand how it works…seems you’re listening to Elizabeth Warren too much without understanding.
