The Greatest offensive line in CFB couldn't convert game winning 3rd and 1

Look guys-they knew we weren't going to risk throwing it so it really doesn't matter how strong your O line is--they got more players on the line than we do. Get over it.

It is what it is

My mood will change when there is less talk and more doing on the hill

I think it would be easier if we hadn't beat South Carolina. After that, the " less talent " excuse went out the window. That proved we had enough talent to compete if we had the right coaching. That coaching, for some reason, disappeared.

Then, we have the disastrous game Saturday with the worst offensive game plan since Picketts Charge at Gettysburg.

Count, I will agree with that last statement. I've been frustrated at people questioning the hire after 11 games, but I can't understand why we didn't have a better offensive game plan against a beatable team with 2 weeks to prepare and a bowl berth on the line.

When was the last TD catch for a TE this year?

Now, on that, you have a good point. South Alabama was Branisel's TD and the last game with a TE TD. Downs had one in each of Austin Peay and Western Kentucky.

I wouldn't call the tight end position thick with talent. Here's to hoping for another year of development and an infusion of talent from the recruits.

Honestly, I think Dobbs' two early picks scared the game plan out of them. They went much more run-heavy after that. Add in the North injury and the fact that the other receivers are still bobbling and dropping passes, it makes for a long day. Howard didn't step up, and Smith needs to spend the next nine months in front of a football throwing machine catching balls.

Still, I agree a little more creativity, even if it's just different kinds of runs, would have been nice. They were a block in the back away from scoring sufficient points.

We still have to have a QB that can get them the ball and an offensive game plan that gets them in the game.

We had a chance to exploit the Vandy D with the TE in the middle

I'm just not sold on this offense. Its down right offensive. Clawson had a better offensive game plan at UT

the last pass we threw downfield to the TE was a good pass in the middle of the field about 15 yards downfield and our only TE tripped over his own feet trying to make the catch that was going to hit him in the face.
I feel for Downs. He's battling. He just can't do much on one wheel and has been on one wheel for 2 years now. Most other players would've already quit.

Add to that Branisel being lost during the week, and he was playing with a bad shoulder. Ayres lost earlier in the year. I'm thinking we need a class of about six TEs.

count, I've like you for years, but you are now repeating yourself adnauseum over coachspeak and have now been assigned to the whiny/repetitive/lack of perspective group.
just sayin

I think another losing season with a loss to a crap school like Vandy has done that to a lot of people. Me included. I find myself repeating over and over on posts how bad Dobbs is. Like to the point where it just sounds like I'm crying all the time. Which is appropriate because deep down I am.

We called a play where the OL had to buckle down and make the blocks. They didn't and the problem is that didn't really surprise me that much. Given the chances they have faltered more than they have succeeded.

OC didn't help them out much in that position, thats not a surprise anymore either.

Keep in mind we had a competent QB against SC.

I understand the mood. I hope better things are coming. I also understand the sloganeering. Butch must exude confidence and belief in his personnel.

What I don't understand in your post is the lack of perspective in the fall off since the UGA/USC game. Isn't modern day football a quarterback driven sport? Certainly, the sport requires team play but the QB has a larger influence on the performance of the team. Our team under went a major transition going from 1st string to 4th.
I don't know enough about game strategy and preparation to comprehend the limitations our offense is under considering our QB play. Seems to me that great players make good coaches look great and bad players make good coaches look horrible. Ex: Chief took lots of crap while at UT with the 3rd and Chavis mantra but looks like a genius with LSU'S talent.

Honestly, I'm not sold either. I think Jones went all-in with his offense figuring it would pay dividends down the road, and it should.

Still gotta win those Vandy-type games. For the first time in a long time, I actually believe a recruiting class is going to pay off big time.

It was an obvious run down given that we were in no position to throw the ball. In retrospect, I'm sure Bajakian would have made a personnel change and subbed out Downs for another OL because of his physical limitations from his injury.

Dude it's Tuesday - game's over and soon this season will be over, this team will be replaced with team 118, aaand that's about all I can think of to be in any shape/form happy about at this time.

This. You get a couple of days to start threads complaining about the game, then you need to move on.

Honest question, what has Downs been battling for 2 years?

I don't get complaints about not using the TE. Bajak doesn't go from throwing to the TE enough to lead a team in receptions to not throwing it at all because he became a dumbass since last year.

The lack of consistency is a concern. The offense that showed up for the 2nd half of UGA and against USC was pretty fun to watch. Maybe that was because Worley was finally able to read the defense and audible. That play where we faked the dive and pitched to Neal that went for like 45+ yards against the Dogs was what I wanted to see at the end of Vandy. That was a thing of beauty.

Those are my thoughts exactly. Two weeks and plenty of Vandy game film to watch, and we came out and did absolutely zero on offense for 3.5 quarters.

Couple that with regression during the season on special teams and basic football skills, and I'm left wondering what in the world is going on during the practices each week.

Those 4th down calls against UGA were beautiful.

one thing that's happening is we have multiple walkons practicing against Jacob Carter, etc. Then we get in a game and our walkon and freshmen db's can't keep up with opposing receivers in the middle of the field, and our non sec caliber wr's can't break away from db's on the other team. Even though Vandy was down to 2nd string db's, what would toney, Arnold and swafford be considered? Starters and 2nd string going against guys like Matthews, while Vandy db's guard against Josh Smith on the outside.

It was an obvious run down given that we were in no position to throw the ball.

This, 9 times out of 10, any team will run for it on 3rd and 1. So the play itself was a good call in a sense that it was a safe play that with our OLine we should've been able to get some what of a hole for the RB to dive through, but they couldn't do that.

The line failed on making a hole, ANY hole would've been good, I don't think even if we went with a QB sneak that this line could've gotten a push to make a hole for anyone to get through.

would've been a great time to do the counter little flip out wide to Neal and have him head for the sideline. There was no one out there as they all crashed the telegraphed play.

You've covered the Vols a long time. Do you like what you see out of Butch?

What are some of your concerns so far?

I've stated that the only question marks I have had with Jones is some of his staff and some of the play calling. Other than that, Jones has done a great job recruiting, bringing ex-vols back to Knoxville, and energized the fans earlier in the year
