The headline should say, "Illegal alien shot by officers defending US border"

A couple of surgical strikes won't solve anything. There's always the next cartel to take over for the previous one. There needs to be a fundamental change in the way Mexico approaches government, economy and industry. One of the big reasons we don't shut the border and force that change is that we are afraid of what system they choose to put in place. In reality what we are doing is subsidizing Mexico's economy because we fear they will replace the current structure with a communist government.

the corruption issue is a hard one to crack. hard to imagine it getting better with less jobs for illegals here in america and the economy there likely in the toilet for years to come.

Pardon my ignorance guys, but I might need a more "spelled-out" answer. I know China/SKorea's troubles but nothing about what they fear.

Mexicans enjoy their freedoms as much as us. Hell, they could elect a Socialist sympathizer just like we did. Closing the border and enforcing the laws will not change that. Just fear pushed by politicians that benefit from illegal immigration, be it cheap labor or votes. Nothing more, nothing less.

Had we not decided to allow large masses of Mexican labor into the US decades ago it is possible, probably even likely that the figure head of communism in America wouldn't be Hugo Chavez but a Mexican dictator.

If we want the situation to change we must help Mexicans take control of their own situation and throw out the corrupt and negligent political machine that runs the country, sadly the Mexican people seem to show very little interest in meeting this end.

Let's take it a few steps further and make Mexico part of the United States.

Hunger and quality of life shapes perceptions and ideas. If Mexico didn't have US $'s pouring in it would collapse. If they didn't have our money enough would turn their backs on freedom to tip the scales. People make stupid decisions when they are poor and starving.

Why would we want to do that. We already have enough of their problems exported here. We are already subsidizing the thing, why would we want complete control of that mess?

Not being an a**, but we are not poor and starving and America made one of its biggest mistakes ever.

Do you think Mexico isnt a dictatorship now? Their president doesnt make a move without the Drug Cartels say or he would be dead.

U.S. closes the border, it makes it more difficult for the majority of Cocaine to get into this country.

If Calderon didnt object to the U.S. closing the border and enforcing immigration laws, he would literally be cutting his own throat.

We're already dealing with their mess and will continue to do so. Why not get some natural resources and more land out of it amongst other things? I tend to think they like where they live, they're just broke. If the "American Dream" came to them, perhaps they would be happy enough to live it down there? I realize it's not that simple and probably won't happen in our lifetime, but I think it will happen one day.

The president does indeed have to be wary and even conspire with the cartels to some extent, the problem there is there are so many powerful cartels that he cannot possibly answer to all of them. For the most part the cartels stick to killing local officials and representatives of the government and leaves the federal government in Mexico alone as long as they don't make too much trouble for the cartels.

The main reason the president of Mexico speaks out against closed borders is because he knows if that happens the cash cow will die, his economy will be in ruins and he will be replaced. The cartels will continue on, they will find new ways of getting drugs into the country, they always have.

Might be a reason but THE reason is if they do this the libs know they will lose tons of votes. Let's be honest.

You are assuming the "American Dream" will still be alive and well 40 to 50 years into the future. At the pace we have been going the past 9 to 10 years I'm just not sure I would bank on that my friend.

Old school domino theory drove our foreign policy for years. The idea was that governments will topple like dominos as communism starts to move. It was our impetus in Korea and Vietnam.

Insulation would be the excuse the Soviets used for surrounding itself with like minded governments, by force or otherwise. It's simply a buffer to keep bad guys off the doorstep.

Staging base for military. Much the same reason we have strategic installations worldwide. It's why we're in Iraq and spend foreign aid cash.

Would you agree that the American dream at it's lowest point is still better than the Mexican dream at it's highest?

We depend on cheap mobile labor just like we depend on foreign oil.

Secure the border, establish a guest worker program and let's get on to other things.
