A couple of surgical strikes won't solve anything. There's always the next cartel to take over for the previous one. There needs to be a fundamental change in the way Mexico approaches government, economy and industry. One of the big reasons we don't shut the border and force that change is that we are afraid of what system they choose to put in place. In reality what we are doing is subsidizing Mexico's economy because we fear they will replace the current structure with a communist government.

If we want the situation to change we must help Mexicans take control of their own situation and throw out the corrupt and negligent political machine that runs the country, sadly the Mexican people seem to show very little interest in meeting this end.
Mexicans enjoy their freedoms as much as us. Hell, they could elect a Socialist sympathizer just like we did. Closing the border and enforcing the laws will not change that. Just fear pushed by politicians that benefit from illegal immigration, be it cheap labor or votes. Nothing more, nothing less.
Hunger and quality of life shapes perceptions and ideas. If Mexico didn't have US $'s pouring in it would collapse. If they didn't have our money enough would turn their backs on freedom to tip the scales. People make stupid decisions when they are poor and starving.
We're already dealing with their mess and will continue to do so. Why not get some natural resources and more land out of it amongst other things? I tend to think they like where they live, they're just broke. If the "American Dream" came to them, perhaps they would be happy enough to live it down there? I realize it's not that simple and probably won't happen in our lifetime, but I think it will happen one day.Why would we want to do that. We already have enough of their problems exported here. We are already subsidizing the thing, why would we want complete control of that mess?
Not being an a**, but we are not poor and starving and America made one of its biggest mistakes ever.
Do you think Mexico isnt a dictatorship now. Their president doesnt make a move without the Drug Cartels say or he would be dead.
U.S. closes the border, it makes it more difficult for the majority of Cocaine to get into this country.
If Calderon didnt object to the U.S. closing the border and enforcing immigration laws, he would literally be cutting his own throat.

Pardon my ignorance guys, but I might need a more "spelled-out" answer. I know China/SKorea's troubles but nothing about what they fear.
Papa- Rub off? And harboring crim? I feel like I missed what you were saying

Would you agree that the American dream at it's lowest point is still better than the Mexican dream at it's highest? You are assuming the "American Dream" will still be alive and well 40 to 50 years into the future. At the pace we have been going the past 9 to 10 years I'm just not sure I would bank on that my friend.
