You can't just switch teams and conferences and get a clear answer.
What would UT be with Strong and and his defensive mind is the better question. I would strongly argue we beat Georgia and MSU, and perhaps Florida. His strength is D and recruiting, our weakness is D and recruiting. He improves those areas IMO
EDIT: You say he is winning close games, key word is winning. How many close games have we lost the last 3 years?
I never suggested a clear answer... I said I'm not convinced he is the answer. Regarding your comment about his defensive strength, Louisville ranks 35th overall in defense giving up over 22 points a game... and that's based on playing teams that have a combined record of 30 W's and 51 L's. Based on those stats I wouldn't view Louisville's defense as being that stellar.
As more and more fans realize Gruden is a pipe dream, Strong support will grow. I've stated a couple times, fans ignore what he is doing, because they are so Gruden obsessed. I've been preaching Strong for awhile now, I'm glad fans are joining us finally.
Go Strong. He's always been my #1 pick. I've said from the get go that Gruden is a pipedream. And to be honest, I don't want Gruden anyways. Guy left the program in worse shape than what he inherited and we don't need that again.
35th overall is a lot better than us. Ok I know competition is the argument, take out the big boys. We'll just do Georgia St, Akron and Troy a combined 6-24. We are giving up 29pts and 442yds per game against our lower level competition. That 29 pts is 7 pts more than Strongs team. I know Troy had 48, Akron had 26 still more than Strong, they are 1-9. One huge key in all this is talent on the team. Our talent is greater than UofL's, nobody would argue that. So give Strong more talent, he'll have better results. UT's talent on D with Strong coaching would be much improved. His recruiting here would be even better. I understand your apprehension toward Strong because of the big east, he has coached in the sec and done well btw. But they were bad in the big east before he got there back to back 4 win seasons. Kragthorpe left him very little talent, now they are undefeated. I dont get why people can't see the improvement. Maybe the Dooley hire scared people, trust me he isn't Dooley. He's going to be a successful coach somewhere, for a very long time. I wish that it would be here, sadly I don't believe it will be.
Edit: just an fyi, those 29pts per against the combined 6-24 teams, would put us 77th in the nation. So with better talent, against our weak competition, we are still considerably lower than UofL. So that kinda hurts the weak competition argument.
So in summary... your argument that Strong has a good defense is to compare it to UT's defense. Brilliant. :good!:
Edit: ignoring that he has improved UofL drastically in 3 years is brilliant! I love how some people only pick part of an argument they feel they can win. And ignore the facts that they can't argue. Lol
I picked the part of your argument that represented the majority of your post... you were comparing UL against UT (record, talent, competition, etc.).
As far as the bolded part of your response above, here is some history for you...
John L. Smith coached UL from 98 - 02 and had a combined record of 41-21 (a 66% winning percentage... and for comparison UL was 1-10 the year before Smith's first year).
Petrino coached UL from 03 - 06 and had a combined record of 41-9 (an 82% winning percentage).
Kragthorpe coached UL from 07 - 09 and had a combined record of 15-21 (a 42% winning percentage).
Strong has coached from 10 - 12 and has a combined record of 23-12 (a 66% winning percentage). Now... a few notes on his record:
- Other than this year, Strong has only shown moderate improvement at best (certainly not "drastic").
- In fact, his overall record is much worse than Petrino's and equal to Smith's (even though he has faced weaker competition).
- His record this year is largely reflective of having a marginally better team and playing weaker competition.
- He has faced no top 25 teams this year... he faced 2 top 25 teams in the prior two years and lost those games.
- Even with a weak schedule, he has won 5 of those games by 5 points or less.
- His defense, if it were that good, should easily be ranked in the top 10 based on the teams he has faced... but it's currently ranked 35th.
I don't have anything against Strong at all, and in fact consider him to be a decent coach. I just don't think he is the answer for UT given our current situation and what we need. I like him MUCH better than Tressel, who some fans are clamoring for, but would put him in a similar category success wise. While Tressel may even be considered a "better than decent" coach, he is 0-9 against SEC teams in bowl games. The fact is that SEC competition has gotten tougher, and it will take a top notch coach (not just above average) to be competitive on a continual basis.
4-8 to 9-0 in 3 years is a drastic improvement imo. Out of curiosity who do you want?
I would consider Gary Patterson, Bill O'Brien, and Chris Petersen as possibilities. I would be fine with Gruden as well... just don't think that's happening. Third option might be to bring in a strong DC and see what happens next year (this assuming boosters can't come up with money to hire a new HC).
Urban Meyer probably couldn't've cared less about Defense. So would you agree that Charlie Strong from 2005-2009 was running the show at Florida on the defensive side of the ball and should be given credit for it? I didn't look at the numbers during Zook as he was a defensive guy and probably had more of a hand in the defense.

I dont see Patterson or Peterson coming here. Not really sold on O'Brien, admittedly don't know a lot about him though. I agree that Gruden is unlikely. Why not bring in a strong defensive oriented coach, to go with the offense we already have? Like I said I do understand your apprehension toward Strong. I just feel like he would be a good long term guy. Not just a guy that would be passing through.

This! This shows that Strong knows what he is doing as far a defense goes.
You should check out O'Brien's history and experience. I think you would be impressed.
It also shows the defense has gotten worse the three years he has been at Louisville... not better... even though the opponents they've played have gotten weaker.
