You are funny man. You ignore the defenses he coached at Florida, and instead point out the slight increase at UofL. You ignored me showing you the improvement in record at UofL and instead focused on me comparing the 2 defenses. I have objectively responded to your posts, and said I understand your apprehension in Strong. Its fairly obvious you will ignore positives about Strong at this point. I like him as a coach and you don't, and that's cool. But ignoring the positives and only focusing on the negatives is funny to me.
As far as the bolded part of your response above, here is some history for you...
John L. Smith coached UL from 98 - 02 and had a combined record of 41-21 (a 66% winning percentage... and for comparison UL was 1-10 the year before Smith's first year).
Petrino coached UL from 03 - 06 and had a combined record of 41-9 (an 82% winning percentage).
Kragthorpe coached UL from 07 - 09 and had a combined record of 15-21 (a 42% winning percentage).
Strong has coached from 10 - 12 and has a combined record of 23-12 (a 66% winning percentage). Now... a few notes on his record:
- Other than this year, Strong has only shown moderate improvement at best (certainly not "drastic").
- In fact, his overall record is much worse than Petrino's and equal to Smith's (even though he has faced weaker competition).
- His record this year is largely reflective of having a marginally better team and playing weaker competition.
- He has faced no top 25 teams this year... he faced 2 top 25 teams in the prior two years and lost those games.
- Even with a weak schedule, he has won 5 of those games by 5 points or less.
- His defense, if it were that good, should easily be ranked in the top 10 based on the teams he has faced... but it's currently ranked 35th.
I don't have anything against Strong at all, and in fact consider him to be a decent coach. I just don't think he is the answer for UT given our current situation and what we need. I like him MUCH better than Tressel, who some fans are clamoring for, but would put him in a similar category success wise. While Tressel may even be considered a "better than decent" coach, he is 0-9 against SEC teams in bowl games. The fact is that SEC competition has gotten tougher, and it will take a top notch coach (not just above average) to be competitive on a continual basis.
Not trying to be funny at all... just sharing my opinion. However, lets take these one at a time.
Regarding the defenses at FL, show me where they were greatly improved once he got there and how they fell apart after he left.
Regarding his record at UL, did you not read my previous post? Does this look like I ignored his record?
I have also objectively responded to your posts, so please don't take it personally when someone doesn't agree with you. I never said I don't like Strong, in fact I have said the opposite. I never said Strong wasn't a good coach. All I said was that I don't think Strong is the answer for UT at this point in time. :hi:
You talking about Lovie Smith? Seems like his team is doing mighty well, right now.I don't think I've ever seen him fired up and excited.....about anything happening on the field....am I wrong?
I've wanted Strong over Gruden all along. I think I've posted my reasons several times in in the Strong and Gruden threads. If Gruden is #1 on the list and Strong is #3(from what I've heard thrown around on here, who is #2 on the list?
+1. I would have more patience, but my confidence is zero, in the powers that be in UT's admin and BOT's to get this right.I have no patience, this wait is killing me.
