The Hire Charlie Strong Thread

You are funny man. You ignore the defenses he coached at Florida, and instead point out the slight increase at UofL. You ignored me showing you the improvement in record at UofL and instead focused on me comparing the 2 defenses. I have objectively responded to your posts, and said I understand your apprehension in Strong. Its fairly obvious you will ignore positives about Strong at this point. I like him as a coach and you don't, and that's cool. But ignoring the positives and only focusing on the negatives is funny to me.

Not trying to be funny at all... just sharing my opinion. However, lets take these one at a time.

Regarding the defenses at FL, show me where they were greatly improved once he got there and how they fell apart after he left.

Regarding his record at UL, did you not read my previous post? Does this look like I ignored his record?

As far as the bolded part of your response above, here is some history for you...

John L. Smith coached UL from 98 - 02 and had a combined record of 41-21 (a 66% winning percentage... and for comparison UL was 1-10 the year before Smith's first year).

Petrino coached UL from 03 - 06 and had a combined record of 41-9 (an 82% winning percentage).

Kragthorpe coached UL from 07 - 09 and had a combined record of 15-21 (a 42% winning percentage).

Strong has coached from 10 - 12 and has a combined record of 23-12 (a 66% winning percentage). Now... a few notes on his record:
  1. Other than this year, Strong has only shown moderate improvement at best (certainly not "drastic").
  2. In fact, his overall record is much worse than Petrino's and equal to Smith's (even though he has faced weaker competition).
  3. His record this year is largely reflective of having a marginally better team and playing weaker competition.
  4. He has faced no top 25 teams this year... he faced 2 top 25 teams in the prior two years and lost those games.
  5. Even with a weak schedule, he has won 5 of those games by 5 points or less.
  6. His defense, if it were that good, should easily be ranked in the top 10 based on the teams he has faced... but it's currently ranked 35th.

I don't have anything against Strong at all, and in fact consider him to be a decent coach. I just don't think he is the answer for UT given our current situation and what we need. I like him MUCH better than Tressel, who some fans are clamoring for, but would put him in a similar category success wise. While Tressel may even be considered a "better than decent" coach, he is 0-9 against SEC teams in bowl games. The fact is that SEC competition has gotten tougher, and it will take a top notch coach (not just above average) to be competitive on a continual basis.

I have also objectively responded to your posts, so please don't take it personally when someone doesn't agree with you. I never said I don't like Strong, in fact I have said the opposite. I never said Strong wasn't a good coach. All I said was that I don't think Strong is the answer for UT at this point in time. :hi:

Florida was 3rd the last year he was there, 32nd the following year. UofL was 75th the year before strong, the were 16th his first year. That's a pretty good decline for Florida and a huge jump for UofL. I didn't say you ignored his record. (Edit: I just saw where I did say that once. My fault.) 4-8 pre strong to 9-0 in 3 years is a big improvement. I said you ignored when people pointed out improvements.

How is me saying it's funny that you gloss over facts taking it personally? I've said numerous times that I understand your apprehension toward Strong. Someone taking it personally wouldn't say that.

Another thing to consider: The Gruden snag.(supposedly) is that he wants more control than is possible at this point. I doubt Strong would want that much control. Just give him the money.

I don't think I've ever seen him fired up and excited.....about anything happening on the field....am I wrong?

You talking about Lovie Smith? Seems like his team is doing mighty well, right now.

Strong reminds me of Lovie, in that regard and that he is a very good defensive tactition. Lovie's Bears showed how that works against the Titans, last Sunday. Put on a clinic for us...unfortunately.

The Gruden train hit a cheek in the road and is off the track. Jumping on the Strong railway. We want Strong, we want Strong, we want Strong.

I've wanted Strong over Gruden all along. I think I've posted my reasons several times in in the Strong and Gruden threads. If Gruden is #1 on the list and Strong is #3(from what I've heard thrown around on here, who is #2 on the list?

My guess would be Patterson. He has proven alot more than Strong IMO. CS is just not worth the money it would take to get him from Louisville. Knowing our AD, Kirby Smart could very well be #2.

I don't see Patterson leaving the state of Texas. I think that's where he's from and his family lives there. Maybe for Arkansas.... I'm don't know that for a fact. Think I read it somewhere though.

Strong is a good DC, but I am not sold on him as a head coach at the SEC level. I'd pass on him.

I live 3 miles from Louisville Kentucky. I have watched this program go from having the world at it's fingertips to being in he same shape we r in to now being back to national prominence again "petrino kragthorpe strong" i personally look at the 3 years charlie has been at Louisville and look at the recruiting he has done to LOUISVILLE and i say we need this guy in Knoxville he is dynamic his players would run through a brick wall for him and he is extremely active in the community. I worked, with one of his former players he was recruited by petrino played for kragthorpe and charlie he says things that i would want to hear from our players he said i love coach strong he is the kinda guy that when he see's you in the hallways he stops says hello hows your family hows your mom calls her by her name that's huge if u look at when we had success it was when UT was a family he is a long term hire that can also make us win enough right away my vote is charlie 2013 ut head coach sorry this was done on my phone

I would hire Butch Jones before I would Charlie Strong. Jones is younger, has won more games as a HC, and would demand about 1/2 the salary Strong would. JMO

I respectfully disagree. CS knows the SEC. He was a great DC and a recruiter. Its not even close in my opinion(which isn't worth much).

I ask you this the other day an don't remember a response.

Does jones style of play fit at Tennessee?

I think it could fit just fine. I don't buy into the whole "it won't work in the SEC" stuff. Malzahn and Sumlin have shown that different offenses and or systems can work if coached properly.

I have no patience, this wait is killing me.
+1. I would have more patience, but my confidence is zero, in the powers that be in UT's admin and BOT's to get this right.

They have bungled two hires in a row (yes Hamilton had the lead role, but the BOT's were complicit in the fiasco that is the hiring of Dooley), and I can only surmise that they will stay on a roll, and screw this one up, too.
