The Ink is Dry on the Contract!!!

This is the latest from Spurrier

Reached by phone Wednesday while recruiting in Florida, Spurrier said he has tried to use the Alabama speculation to the Gamecocks’ benefit.
“It’s always flattering if somebody thinks that you’re a good enough coach to go to one of those kind of programs. That’s how we’ve been using it with our recruits,” Spurrier said. “It’s a compliment that maybe they think I’m a good enough coach to go to those places. So we’re trying to turn it into a positive.”
USC received oral commitments Wednesday from a pair of 6-foot-4 wide receivers: Jason Barnes of Charlotte and Joseph Hills of Bradenton, Fla.
Hills said Spurrier recently assured him that he would be back with the Gamecocks.
“He told me all that stuff is false. He’s not going anywhere,” Hills said. “He basically said that South Carolina felt like home to him, so he’s going to stick around for quite some time.”
Spurrier would neither confirm nor deny that he had been contacted by Alabama.
“I’m tired of talking about all that. Miami, Alabama, Tennessee,” he said. “Let me tell you a good rumor. My high school job is open — Science Hill High School (in Johnson City, Tenn.). And if things go real, real bad for me, I might have to consider that as a last alternative job.”

He is not going to Bama

In other words, he's just admitted his strategy on the recruiting trail. He's admitted to lying. Which in itself isn't abnormal for recruiting but to come out and say it means what all can you take at face value with the guy?

It's getting to where I can't remember what I read on which board so if this is redundant please pardon me. The people who want to keep believing that SOS is headed to Tuscaloosa are saying that the oft quoted Spurrier comments from yesterday about not leaving, using the attention for recruiting, and Science Hill were made before Bama produced it's 2nd offer yesterday afternoon/evening (?). Supposedly, Spurrier turned them down and countered with a "wish list" that probably no school would/could match but Bama said they would meet all his demands. I don't know if this is accurate but it's possible that it is true and therefore the Spurrier to Bama speculation still has slim chance of being proved meritorious. Once I see either SOS on TV saying that he met them and turned them down or some other guy being named Bama HC I'll be unconvinced either way. Until then it is too good a story to let go of.

I wonder what the wish list is? I know it is definitely not money. The man is still living off of Dan Snyder's family fortune.

I believe it includes Bill Oliver, and his son, and total autonomy...
If you beleive the Bama boards it's those three plus:

$5 million signing bonus
over $3 million per year for 7 years
first right of refusal on A.D. job when Mal Moore retires in a couple of years
answers only to the Univ. president (I guess that's autonomy)
blank check (surely some reasonable limit) for assistants
membership at Shoal Creek CC

At least he's not asking for much.

If I were in his or Saban's position I think I'd bleed every last million I could out of 'em for a non-refundabale signing bonus payable on the day I show up for work and then I'd use my first press conference to announce my early retirement.

I think you left out the lifetime supply of "Got 12" T-shirts.

And the official title of "Ol' Ball Coach" on his door. All statues of the Bear replaced with his own graven image complete with visor.

Yes and the 13, AND 14, AND 15, ETC.... :eek:k:

Is that how many more coaches they will go through before Bama even sniffs a NC?

And a little grammar lesson a th goes behind the number....i.e. 13th, 14th, and 15th

I know that grammar is a graduate level course at Bama so I will cut you some slack

you had better hope you're right, because you wont ever be able to post here again. I just find it curious that even as SOS has already signed this contract, there is still at least 3 coaches an hour holding a press conference to turn Alabama down. You could call the ESPN News channel the "I am not interested in the head coaching position at Alabama" network.

Finebaum just reported that in the SC team meeting Spurrier told his team that he is not going anywhere and they are stuck with him.
