The JB Incident

Dudes still trying to do damage control for his idiocy. Gets discplined by the coach, defense rallies together in solidarity and essentially throws the USCe game. He comes back and everyones happy and they roll Vandy, then the dude bails on the team, again, for the bowl game. The difference this time is now the rest of the defense realized coming together for him earlier was a mistake and kicked the sh!t out of Clemson.

The guy needs to move on and focus on what little football future he may or may not have.

Then maybe you should be a wee bit more angry about the entire defense laying down and refusing to play because of a disciplinary decision by the head coach. That sounds much more immature to me than whatever you mean by "choosing sides."

I will never believe this fantasy fiction of our “entire defense laying down and refusing to play.” To me, this incident—whatever happened—seems like it clearly rattled the entire team. But our entire defense intentionally throwing a game in some kind of movie-like solidarity with a teammate who was unfairly punished and victimized? That’s nuts. And Heup “choosing sides?” What world are you people living in? Part of any leader’s job — including college football head coaches — is disciplining individual players when they screw up.

[a multi-post energetic defense of Jeremy and consequent criticism of Coach Heupel]
I appreciate your loyalty to Jeremy Banks. But the story that came out doesn't support your position.

Here's the story as it was most clearly described on vn.com and in the media*:

1. There is a large Power T on the floor in the locker room. The team has a tradition that "no one steps on the T." The traditional team-enforced punishment for violating this unwritten rule is doing some pushups. [we knew a lot of this already from an incident a few years back involving Jaylen Reeves-Maybin, Curt Maggitt, and some freshman who made the same mistake]

2. Banks stepped on the T. Hendon was nearby, called him out. Said something like, "do your pushups." Jeremy refused, Hendon (and Milton, according to some stories) called him on it, things got heated, and there was some pushing and shoving.

3. Heupel found out about the incident later. He apparently suspended Banks from traveling to the next game as punishment for not respecting the team's locker room tradition, and perhaps also for not recognizing Hooker's leadership role on the team. NOTE: Josh Heupel has never discussed this incident publicly, including his thoughts on the matter or reasoning for any decisions taken.

4. Did more happen? Did Banks show disrespect to an assistant coach or Heupel himself when the coaches heard about the incident later? No way of knowing, but given Banks' temper (evident in other altercations over the past few years) it certainly seems possible.

Okay, that's it. That's what we know, what we think we know, and some key information we definitely do not know.

Given the limits of our knowledge, I wouldn't say that "both players needed to be punished but only one was." It seems to me one player was in the wrong, and the other was right. They were both wrong to the extent the disagreement got physical, but football is a physical sport and they're young men. That's not the big thing. The big thing is adhering to the spirit of the team, which includes respecting the team's traditions.

I'm with Coach Heupel. Have no reason to believe he didn't handle it just as a good coach should.

Go Vols!

Overrated? LMFAO! Tell me you don't know jack about football without telling me. He'll be playing on Sunday.

He was overrated. He was a below average SEC starting LB. He was good as a QB spy and not bad as a pass rusher. But as an off the ball LB, he was bad. He didn't read and react well at all. Sometimes Beasley would beat him to the play from the backside.

When two players have a confrontation, you deal with both. You don't punish one and let the other slide. Heupel let his personal feelings impact his job.

You only punish one when one of them is a model citizen and the other one has a reputation for being a problem.

There was an incident between he and Hooker. Heupel chose sides, instead of handling the issue fairly like a coach should. The defense saw what went down and was mad their guy got suspended and Hooker didn't.

Lol tell me your a conspiracy theorist without telling me. "The defense was mad!" "So they just laid down!"

I think maybe you're right but dont have inside knowledge to state it as a fact.

It appears the entire team learned from the situation as the next two games were played at a very high level. This is what we want from a coaching staff.
Learn; adapt; move forward.

Honestly? The complete opposite. “It was my fault. I made a mistake, and I learned from it”. Granted he’s probably not getting drafted either way

Yep, FA but he still should have owned it. I think he can make a specials team, but the leash is short in NFL, which stands for Not For Long.
IMO that just shows how smart or not smart his decision-making is, he should have owned it no matter.

JB gives a little light on his USCe absence, not much, admittedly, but maybe more than we had.
Source: Tennessee football's Jeremy Banks on South Carolina game: 'No reason I should've been not playing'
I still say there were at least a number of players on defense that threw that game. I don’t think Banks is that good that his absence alone would make our defense appear that bad. I don’t think any defense could look that bad without trying.

Something happened, and I think the players showed that the coaches needed them more than they needed the coaches.

Lets hope all parties involved took something away from the situation that happend. Did it suck watching our team get boat raced by an avg south carolina team? YESSS. But i believe in Huepel he has learned from his mistakes so far. Lets hope he keeps it up.

You don’t speak for all of us.

And you were at no point voted as the “Vol Nation Grammar Police”. I did not write my response thinking about whether it was written in first or third person account, I gave my opinion. Your Mom was right, “if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything “. (Once again, my opinion)

I’m sure he would say that. It’ll be interesting to see if he participates at Pro-Day on campus. It doesn’t matter what he says much anyway, it’s not like anyone that’s serious about drafting won’t be talking to Heupel and DC Banks too.
I disagree. It does matter what he says. As you mentioned, NFL teams will be talking to Heupel and everyone else involved with the program. They will find out the truth. They won't look favorably on Banks not holding himself accountable for mistakes.

Is it any surprise that Banks thinks he has no fault here? Doesn’t surprise me. At the end of the day, there is only one opinion that counts and that is Heupel’s. Since you weren’t there, your opinion is irrelevant. Next subject.

The dude skip meetings and stuff like that. You can't do that sorry.

There's no chance in hell it was Heupel's feelings that got in the way over Jeremt Banks 😂 get real

Banks messed up admit it

I also don't hold it against him. I ain't perfect either and I loved Banks when he played here so I'm not biased one way or another.

But seriously? He's the only player out of 100+ over the last two years to get suspended a game and its Heupel's feelings that got in the way? Please.
Believe what you want.
