The Liberal Argument for a Higher Minimum Wage

That's just the problem with common core, you're forced to learn it all of those different ways (regardless if you're better at one method over the other).
Good. When you're learning you never know what way suits you best. That's kinda the point of school

Do some research on common core. It is terrible and stupid, and when first implemented many older teachers chose to retire rather than teach kids an inferior, unnecessary method to do the same things we have always done in much simpler ways. This math problem is a great example and does not paint an inaccurate picture of CC.

Who here looked at the problem and didnt solve it simply in their head like this?

10x 35. 350...just add a zero
2x35. 70. Answer is 420. Took about a second. But lets draw boxes in order to do simple multiplication. So stupid.

We had already decided my kids werent going to public school, but if we had not...CC would have sealed the deal anyway. Go watch some youtube videos about the insanity that is common core

You don't understand common core. A child doesn't get the choice of what method he/she wants to use. Common core exams TEST you on each of those different methods.

That's why you're forced into learning it those different ways. Your grade depends on it.

You can watch youtube videos where parents cant even figure out how to make their brains work backwards enough to do their kids elementary school CC homework...because you have to show your methods for everything too

They don't force you to use them in life or on the standardized tests. Real not much different than having to memorize dates in history class. Some of the methods may not be what you use but everybody is different. Some need more and different instruction

Lots of stupid people on YouTube. Not a surprise

Then what's the point if you dont use them? School should be reading you for the real world.

Except school should also teach you how to learn and apply concepts. That doesn't always mean they're applicable to your future career

Generally speaking, the first 12 years of school teaches you everything that you don't need to know for the next 40 years.

it's 30sec of a lesson. Maybe that's the long way? It's a tweet meant to deceive. Understanding why is as important as how imo but it's rarely taught anymore. No need to check work on a multiple choice test
The video (and backazzwards instructions) is 2:20 long. A kid could've finished 15 or more division problems in that time. The lady did the problem and made coffee in that time. Nothing deceiving.

The two ways of showing them are, the way the lady did it on paper and the 5 second in your head version of 35 x 10 (add 0) 350 35 x 2 = 70 350 + 70 = 420

Well it was multiplication so if they were doing division then they were doing it wrong

It's a lesson not a race to the single answer. It was a dumb tweet

When I watched that video I was able to understand the concept behind it because I knew how to dew (for mcdad) it in the real world. I just dont understand the logic behind the concept. It's the same process and end solution, just with like 5 steps added to it.

I didnt need to be taught a bad way to understand or apply good concepts. Generally if you can understand the good way of doing things the bad ways are easy to pick up. Cant say it goes the other way though.

I would be more understanding if CC was onlyused for people who needed the help. But for the general population it serves no purpose but to muddy the water.

Wait, you just did a similar process demonstrated in the video. She was teaching and just explained why it works.

Similar as in it removes half the steps that she did?
Except she teaching a brand new concept to young kids. She breaks it down to 10s instead and shows all the steps and why it works. I'm truly struggling to see how learning different methods is bad

The division is my typo. The tweet shows exactly what's wrong with schools. No wonder they allow kids today to turn in work that is a 0 from months back. They gotta keep those ratios up.

Not true.
My kids were forced to use certain methods like drawing dots etc and were graded on the method not the result.
I literally sat down with the teacher and said no we are not doing it this way.
Only reason we didn’t send them to private was we only hsve a catholic school nearby.

But u are wrong on the forced part.

Cause it doesn’t work when you get to higher math and we are getting slaughtered by other countries who actually teach real math.

It doesnt appear she is actually teaching multiplication to first time students. At least that's not how it was broken down for me. To understand what she was doing one would have to understand the concepts behind multiplication.

She is teaching a different method.

Standardized tests not classroom testing
