The Liberal Argument for a Higher Minimum Wage

Shhhh! You’ll mess up the narrative that dems love the poor and Republicans hate the poor.
while all the negative fall out and loss of jobs is happening, they dems will still be counting votes and telling us how much they care.

I’ll give them this:

It’s a brilliant strategy. Pitch ideas you know will fail, so you can just continually double down on them to win more votes.

You raise minimun wage to $15. Unemployment and poverty rise. You claim we need to raise minimum to offset this. Unemployment and poverty rise. You then just continue the cycle and keep getting more votes.

I would love for anyone to explain to me how the laws of supply and demand don’t apply to minimum wage?

If the price of labor increases (minimum wage) demand decreases (less jobs).
How dare you think of labor as a resource. You monster.

In 1964, one hour of minimum wage labor would buy you about an ounce of silver. Today, it gets you half an ounce.

Not really that hard to make a justification for higher wages.
Right because that is how most minimum wage earners base the value of their work. And yeah it is hard to justify it.

So are you in favor of artificially controlling the supply instead of allowing the market to dictate its needs? That's a pretty hot topic right now

OK, this is a Liberal on a Liberal talk show making the Liberal argument for a higher minimum wage. It does however pretty much sums up the Liberal reasoning on this subject. I would very much appreciate hearing the conservatives here rebut the argument.

I thought I would post this as things are a little slow around the political forum.

Please, if you have a comment at least watch the video.

RIP MT LeConte. We barely knew yee.

I'll assume you fell into the same pit as VolProf and OuterBanksVol

Biggest problem I have with higher minimum wage advocates is that misrepresent what a higher minimum wage would actually do, sometimes intentionally.

A higher minimum wage does not necessarily "benefit workers" or "benefit the lower class." A higher minimum wage benefits people with minimum wage skills, who currently have a job, and who aren't on what I'd call the edges of employment (i.e., they are essential/important enough for their employer not to let them go in the event of a hike). Folks that an employer actually does need to keep around, even if it means paying them more. This is a pretty small subset of the "lower class" they claim it helps.

It does not help - in fact it hurts - those who are unemployed with minimum wage skills, and those who make minimum wage (or thereabouts) but are on the edges of employment. When you legally force someone with $8/hour skills to be paid $15/hour, guess what, a lot of their jobs will go away. You have higher paying jobs, but a lot less of them. Is that really helping?

The only way they liberals will ever get that "to work", is when they put in profit/earnings caps on business.

Which hopefully will never happen.

The real minimum wage is $0. When the government decides on an artificial wage, business adjusts by eliminating those positions which no longer are profitable, resulting in $0 being paid.

And I do not know if anyone has mentioned it, but if a $15/hr wage is deemed great by the government, well hell, why would a $30/hr wage not be better? Or yet, $60! Yes! $60/hour minimum wage should make sure everyone has a living wage.

Absolutely. A higher minimum wage also raises the cost of everything.

no, you're definitely the first 🙄

LOL. 😂.

Been awhile since being on this thread. I actually liked a post that mentioned the same thing. Just did not have time to read all the way through...

My apologies to everyone for a duh moment.

I will add this however. The Repubs keep mishandling this. They should, no matter what the Dems offer, up the ante. Dems ask for $15, insist on $25. Force their noses into the big pile of crap that will result from this farce.

My favorite is when they bash people willing to offer them more than anyone else.

“Jeff Bezos only pays x amount”
Or
“Walmart only pays x amount”

The real question should be “why is no one willing to pay you more?”

And the truth with Walmart is if you’re not worthless, it’s not a bad job. At 19 I was making around 10 an hour working stock crew when minimun wage was 5.15. But if you want to stand behind a register and do as little as possible, you deserve as little as possible

They've run out of tax money to spend. Have to have another source of money to hand out.

Why should anyone be forced to work. We can print money. Just print and send to everyone each week. Screw wages!
