The Liberal Argument for a Higher Minimum Wage

Coming from an automation background, I see very few jobs in a fast food place like McD's that can't be easily automated. French Fries? They already tell people when to lift the basket out of the oil, how hard is it to do it for them and dump it into the bin, not hard and not expensive. Frying burger patties, same as fries. Fixing a drink? Have you watched those machines? They already fill and stop based on the size of the cup, another easily automated machine.
In fact almost every single job in McD's can be automated except for fixing the machines and having multiple lanes fixes that.
Welcome to the future $15 an hour!

I think everyone knows I lean pretty far left on most issues but I think $15 is insanity. Its way too high. I think it needs to raised to somewhere around $9.
It depends on where you live and the cost of living. Of course the $15 wage is popular so the politicians just trot that out as a universal wage that they think works for small town TN just like it does in NYC or LA.

If we were honestly worried about what low income families eat we would require them to purchase healthy foods with their free benefits. Go to a grocery store and take a peek inside the cart of an average snap recipient.

This is a product of the government subsidiaries on corn. It makes feed for cattle cheap (makes them sick too) and it makes corn syrup cheap also.

If subsidies were switched from corn to vegetables the value menu at Wendy's would have salads and burgers would be $8.

My wife was part of a food drive where they went out and took up grocery list for needy families and bought their groceries. The list was packed with Little Debbies and such.

She said she wondered why they all ate so bad until they rang her up, then she understood.

She said her cart was packed and the total came up to $70

Bad food isnt cheap either. People sometimes prefer junk, no matter their location on the wealth chart. Another factoid I always wondered about was why not require people on assistance limited options on purchases like non name brand or store brand only purchases. I buy this way when possible and absolutely love Aldi produce

Minimum wage jobs were never intended to be a long term career.

Unfortunately, it's a huge double edged sword. The good jobs most of these people could of had are gone and if you increase minimum wage inflation is simply going to kick in and pull them right back to the same purchasing power ratios.

It will also lower the middle class.

Hey..... minimum wage earnings and a social security retirement. Nirvana

I’ve never understood the reasoning for a minimum wage. What do you think the businesses will just eat the cost? No, prices will be raised across the board to cover the losses in payroll and you’re right back where you started. You’ll also see a lot of job loss due to automation as a result of the labor cost being so expensive.

I don’t know anyone who makes minimum wage. I don’t even see signs for hiring starting a minimum wage.

Is the minimum wage even a real issue? Or is this an attempt to push wages up across the board and hiding the motives behind feigned altruism?

At some point I think the fed govt will try to pass laws controlling pay for executives/mgmt/salary employees and more restrictive laws around practices. They want so bad to control how a business uses it's money. But the business is free to act in it's own best interest as you've correctly stated. They have a profit goal. So what you suggest will happen. Prices go up for everything. Staffing is cut to offset increased costs. Automation. The money grabbing govt raises taxes on a business, and a business is free to adjust as they need to keep their money. Govt tries to institute a higher min wage or "living wage" and a business is free to adjust as they want.

I'm guessing at some point the govt tries to put in earnings maximums for officers/executives/mgmt. Either max salary of "x" dollars or some % against the lowest paid employee. And the excess has to go to regular employee pay, benefits programs, training programs, ect.

Is it legal now? Probably not I'd guess. Doesn't mean that will stop them from trying if they want.

Thay is so laughable. Rooms full of tax attorneys that will work around any idiotic law they pass to control compensation. Again it will be the middle people that will get crushed.

"Get the rich" emotionally awesome, intellectually stupid.

It may have already been addressed somewhere, but the raise to $15.00 is just the tip of the ice berg. Everyone who is making wages above the lowest earners will want their pay raised accordingly. Someone making $16.00 an hour now will want theirs to go to say $21.00 hr. If that gap is adjusted accordingly across the board, you will have inflation like you have never seen. For people on fixed incomes it will be a disaster of epic proportions.

And they have $900 cell phones and all their kids do as well and their bill is over $300 a month. I coached this kid in football and they had all kinds of government handouts yet she goes out and parties about 4 times a week, she puts up pics of herself and her friends with drinks everywhere.
