The Month of May

So damn close to a new hero only to have it ripped away by some talentless diabetic ****. **** Charlie Kimball.

Dealing with slow traffic is part of the game. I hated to see him wreck, in fact I cursed mightily. Hildebrand should have waited until after the turn to pass as his pursuers were not close enough to catch him.

He couldn't back out of it as he was running on fumes and depending on momentum to get him to the line. Had he slowed and not gotten back up to some sort of speed before the gas ran out on him, Wheldon would have gotten him anyway.

I disagree, even after hitting the wall, which I'm sure you agree slowed him down much more than lifting in the turn would have, he still only lost by a short distance. A veteran driver would have backed off coming into the turn early, then timed his acceleration to be at maximum exit speed just as he caught the slower car, probably downshifting to help the acceleration. The amount of fuel is irrelevant. Backing off would have used a little less, and if he ran out, he would have been too far from the finish line to stay in front either way.

It was def a rookie mistake - have only seen the replay but it doesn't appear that the back marker did anything wrong. Sucks for Hildebrand - Wheldon is building an incredible Indy resume. Glad for Bryan Herta as well.

Finally got a chance to watch the race. A few thoughts.

1) Before the start, one of the pit reporters was making comments about how rookies would handle the race; particularly towards the end. He was standing in JR Hildebrand's pit.

2) Taking a high line in Turn 4 was trouble all day long. It was the most unforgiving turn for some reason.

3) Charlie Kimball did nothing wrong. In fact, he gave Hildebrand as much room as anyone could. It was clear from the beginning of the turn that as soon as JR got off line he was cooked. There was room but his car would not turn.

4) Great race overall.

5) Love to see the emotion Dan Wheldon showed. That is what Indy is all about. It is an epic struggle with the highest highs and lowest lows. No other race I've watched over the years is such a war as Indy is.

6) ABC and the Indy coverage overall needs to talk more about the non-marquee teams. Hildebrand, Baguette, Scheckter and a few others were competitive all day long but barely got a mention.

7) Shocked Penske was so poor.

8) Sam Schmidt had terrible luck. He had two top 5 cars for a while then all got taken out.

9) The former Andretti Green team of Franchitti, Kanaan, Wheldon and Herta is still tight.

10) Indy is on the way back to it's former glory.

11) Yellow was late but it would have sucked royally if a yellow technicality kept the victory with Hildebrand.

Solid analysis, I would add that Danica drove a good race, got hurt by untimely yellows and fuel situation cost her a very legitimate shot at a win.

Agree strongly with #4 & 10.

Schmidt had a hand in the BHA entry (I think it was one of his old cars or something, along with setup) so it's not all bad.

SSR most definitely had a hand in the Herta team. Supposedly that chassis was the 7th one built, ever, in 03.

Both teams shared tech data, setups, etc. Herta had to supply his own crew.

As for the 500 being back, I wholeheartedly agree. I won't say that I fell in love with Speedway all over again because I've never not loved it, but this month reaffirmed everything I loved about the month of May.

Also, I believe they will usher in the new aero kits next year, starting with the 500.

That could make next year even more exciting than this one.

Some info on the new Dallara. The nearly enclosed rear wheels are the most interesting part IMO. Hopefully, there is enough customizability to bring back some of the chassis competition.

At the end of the article there's a link to some more pics.

Lucky bastards. Seeing the 500 is on my bucket list.

I said after going for the first time anyone that is a fan of motorsports, whether you like Indy car or not, should see this race one time. It's crazy seeing those cars go that fast for that long.
