The more I listen to Coach Sal the more I realize

Typical orange glasses wishful thinking. Wilcox is one of the bright young minds in the game. In your face yelling is one way to coach, but not the only way. Wilcox got out while the getting was good. Considering that all but two coaches left, who can blame the guy. The D was definately the bright spot for this team since he was DC.

New name huh?

Wilcox went because he wanted to go. If he had stayed he would have gotten another gig unless his D flopped... and that is fairly unlikely with the personnel he had returning.

Wilcox and his northwest sidekick were definitely guys UT didn't want to lose.

If they had really wanted to keep CLT then they would have seriously considered or offered him the DC job. After it came open, that is about the only way they could have kept him. So you make the call: promote someone who you do not believe can do the job or lose him as a position coach?

UT was either indifferent to Russell, Hiestand, and Baggett leaving or else put pressure on them. None got the job done. All three are gone. Call it what you like.

Joseph is still somewhat of a mystery to me.

That Justin Wilcox was way in over his head here at Tennessee. This is the first time in a long time that I've been this excited about a coach. Sal is the real deal, and I CAN'T WAIT to see the product on the field!!

Go Vols!

I'm not ready to say Wilcox was in over his head because he never had the personnel to run his defense. But the excitement that CSS brings to the practice field has me really excited about our D.

Scheme is overrated. More about the Jimmies and Joes. There is something to be said about fundamentals and discipline also

Wilcox's defenses just did not appear "fast". SEC defense is quick and hard hitting. His defenses appeared soft (not the players, the style) and gave too much at the line. He is from a conference that just wanted to slow the offense so that his offense could out score you.

I don't know if that's a fair assessment, though. When Wilcox took over here, he didn't have much in the way of SEC-caliber defensive players available, and he had to play defense in the SEC.

I think Sunseri is going to be great. He was the one I wanted them to get as soon as I heard they were talking to him. But he's also coming in right at the point where we have legitimate SEC talent, experience, and depth to put on the field again. So he SHOULD be teaching a more aggressive style. We have the players to do it now, and it's just a matter of execution.

Wilcox has not gotten the main defensive premise of stopping the run first. Let's be honest folks, they weren't against SEC teams only either. Undisciplined and lack of fundamentals. Just look at the music city bowl as one example.

If you can't feel the buzz, I can't make you.

"Buzz" does not equate to how well they play in a real game. I like Sall and all I'm hearing, but the proof is in the pudding. Let's see how good our defense actually performs before we proclaim him great.

Wilcox's "Bend don't break" attitude doesn't win titles in the SEC... I really like Sal and I think he's gonna get this D back on track. I always hated how Wilcox made the DB's give a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and short. You're pretty much begging the QB to throw an out pass for the first down. Sal has them lining up close jamming up WR's and getting physical. That's what I like to see. JMO

Chavis is laughing at you. It's a frustrating defense, but he's used it to win more than one title.

LOL.. The number 2 overall defense in the nation is a bend don't break?

That's got to be one of the dumbest statements I have seen on this site this week.

Um... did you watch Chavis's coaching scheme in all his years at UT? He is absolutely a "bend don't break" defense guy. Where do you think "third and Chavis" originated? The difference is in the years he has guys talented enough to pull it off. When he doesn't have that talent, his defenses lack luster.

Yes you can and glad you're on board here - your stuff's been solid from what I can tell. Just know what you've got coming from homers if you tell it like it is. The unicorns, rainbows, and dove releaser crowd doesn't cope well with factual crticism of the program......but I think you've probably figured that out by now.

Fade, your problem is you mistake fact with your opinion. You wouldn't know a fact if it bit you in the ass.

The Colts D pretty much sucked. I'd rather our D be great and offense be behind a little. It's easier to shut down opponents than to outscore them.

We don't have Peyton Manning any more either. Would help if we did

wtf! Peyton isn't playing for the vols! OMG,when did this happen?

I'm kind of in "Wait N See" mode. Every year, in anticipation, we all seem to get caught up in the hype over one or more coaches (Clawson, Kiffin, Orgeron, Monte Kiffin, Chuck Smith, Peter Sirmon, etc.). And oftentimes, the product on the field doesn't really match the hype.

Every time I hear Sal talk, I just hear his own brand of coach speak. There really isn't a whole lot they can say this early in the process, anyway.

What the hell ever. The sidekicks have nothing on Sal/Hinshaw. But keep on spewing drivel homey.

I agree...and some posters on here were worried because he hasn't been a DC in the SEC before! Good grief! The guy has been coaching for a long time. I think UT is in good hands. I would be highly shocked if you don't see a better tackling team as well.

I hope thats the case. im not trying to have that Arkansas punt return all over again.... Terrible tackling

I think Wilcox was a good up and coming DC that was ready for a step up from BS to a bigger program and that CDD did as well as he could in such a short time to get him.

No doubt he didn't have a D roster with very much to work with but in many cases he did pretty well with what little he had to work with.

While I believe he was ready for a step up from BS to a bigger program I don't believe he was ready for the SEC level just yet but that might change in a few more years.

Everyone know that both Wilcox and Sirmon were Left coast guys and would run when a decent opportunity presented itself but I also believe that Wilcox couldn't wait to get away from the SEC where he really was a little over his head and needed to get to a conference where the competition wasn't as tough every week.

CDD always wanted to switch to the 3-4 from day 1 and he even recruited more for the 3-4 to start getting the right types of players on our roster and Wilcox just wasn't the right guy for a 3-4/4-3 multiple D type of game.

That's also why Wilcox only got a 2 year contract and he knew all along that CDD was going to replace him as soon as the right 3-4 guy was available and Sirmon always played in a 4-3 D so he wasn't the right guy to teach LB's the 3-4 D and both CDD and him knew that too.

I also believe that CDD let it be known months before that he was making the 3-4 switch and that most of the D coaches needed to start looking for new jobs because he wanted specifically 3-4 coaches to help make the changeover as quick and easy as possible.

This was all part of the original CDD rebuilding plan that AD Hart likes so much and totally supports but with only 2 weeks to hire coaches and try to save the recruiting class and try to add to it that was the best he could do for his 1st coaching staff.

Wilcox is in a much easier conference now so I think he'll do fine there and will become a HC eventually and probably sooned than alot imagine.

VFL...GBO!!!

Uhhh...did you happen to notice our d-line and LBs??? No scheme other than loading the box with 8-9 guys and getting killed in the air was going to stop the run consistently with the talent we had the past two years.

To all the negavol know it alls that have a problem with people stating their opinions on a football forum.

**** off. Go argue with your wife. Keyboards should be found in the dictionary under superhero lifesavers.
Although unproven as a defensive coordinator, I think Sal Sunseri gives UT a better chance at winning then Justin Wilcox.
The disrespect some people show on this board would get your ass handed to you if you were to talk to grown men like that in person. In private. In public. I realize it is the only opportunity you will ever have to feel like you might win something. An argument.

It amazes me that some people can't have a decent discussion without trying to belittle someone else to try to get their point across. I am disappointed in myself for dropping down to your level.

End of rant.

any real dc would've held kentucky scoreless with austin peay's talent. I have never seen a more careless defense of the option. Crowd the line. Key off the qb. He got out-coached by randy sanders.

I made excuses for the guy right up until that game, despite the fact that his players never knew where the hell to be, when to react, or how to play with any kind of aggression...like he'd sapped all the football instinct from the underclassmen. It just felt like every big play on that side of the ball was a fluke. Dude wasn't ready to coach in the sec. Thank god sal's here.

amen!

**** off.

Who has a problem with your opinion? I simply asked you what makes you have the opinion you have. You decided to act like a child instead of just simply answering a question.

There is a BIG difference is being where you are supposed to be, when you are supposed to be, hitting like you are supposed to hit, and generally "looking" like a well coached team and just being on the field and making plays. Our team was the former. This has nothing to do with talent or depth. It has to do with knowing what is going on. Our D was short talent, depth, and size. However, they weren't short smarts or practice time. Our defense looked like a chinese fire drill a lot of the time. That is a reflection on the coordinator not being fast enough to handle the game. He may have been fast enough at BS, but he wasn't fast enough for the SEC. I firmly believe that he may do VERY well on the west coast where a laid back, what the heck attitude will suffice. I also firmly believe that coaching a defense in the SEC is like riding an out of control bull. You have got to be able to anticipate that bulls next move or your butt is going to be back on the sidelines wondering what the heck happened. That is what I saw for two years from CJW. I am not saying he was a bad coach. He was not ready for the bullride that is the SEC defense.
