The more I listen to Coach Sal the more I realize

I don't think Wilcox was in over his head personally. I think he needed talent and time. Guys with different styles can be equally effective.

I hope Sunseri does great but believe CJW was doing good work too.

The Colts D pretty much sucked. I'd rather our D be great and offense be behind a little. It's easier to shut down opponents than to outscore them.

We don't have Peyton Manning any more either. Would help if we did

Auburn says hello.

I'm not in any way happy or sad that Wilcox is gone for one simple fact. He had less talent on the defensive side of the ball than the offense had on their side of the ball. I don't have an opinion on Wilcox. I'd like to see how he would have called a game with all the pieces in place. I'm talking about the players we have on defense now. He didn't have that luxury while here.

That Justin Wilcox was way in over his head here at Tennessee. This is the first time in a long time that I've been this excited about a coach. Sal is the real deal, and I CAN'T WAIT to see the product on the field!!

Go Vols!

Hard to say because he did not have much talent and/or experience to work with...we were very thin at all positions the last 2 years. I think any coach would have had a challenge with that roster..

Typical orange glasses wishful thinking. Wilcox is one of the bright young minds in the game. In your face yelling is one way to coach, but not the only way. Wilcox got out while the getting was good. Considering that all but two coaches left, who can blame the guy. The D was definately the bright spot for this team since he was DC.

I think he got out because he wanted to live on the West coast...

Wilcox seemed pretty lax. I've seen Sal getting in players faces a couple times in the videos. More than once it was Jordan Williams, lol.

Was that who he was getting onto in the video? I know it was #55, but I did not know who he was.

27th total defense in the nation was not bad considering what Wilcox had to line up to defend LSU, Bama and Arkansas.

After a 5-7 season, and getting trampled over and over, losing to Ky, overtime to Vandy, etc...I don't feel it to be necessary. If you can't see the difference in the intensity, I don't know what to tell you. Unless you want to hear another J. Wilcox comment, like "it is what it is".

So if you think Wilcox sucked so much, I'm going to assume you think Dooley should be long gone too?

Boise St. Defense ranked 14th in the nation in 2009. That's not good enough to win the SEC. Georgia is ranked 5th. We have to compete with Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Lsu, etc..
I simply think Sal is a big improvement over Justin Wilcox. That is my opinion. He is well spoken, intense, preaches discipline, and the players seem to be responding to him much better.

That's right....your opinion....based on nothing more than scrimmages and spring drills.

Uh, yeah, ranked 14th at Boise freakin state. Do you think BSU was beating those schools for talent? All those schools you mention finish in the top 10 in recruiting every year. When is the last time Boise did that?

I'd being screaming and yellin too if my D couldn't stop the worst rushing team from 2011. Think about that for a minute.

Now I see why I never come to the Football Forum. Back to the Recruiting Forum where people are sensible and don't get their panties in a wad about a disagreement.

The D was definately the bright spot for this team since he was DC.

Any real DC would've held Kentucky scoreless with Austin Peay's talent. I have never seen a more careless defense of the option. Crowd the line. Key off the QB. He got out-coached by Randy Sanders.

I made excuses for the guy right up until that game, despite the fact that his players never knew where the hell to be, when to react, or how to play with any kind of aggression...like he'd sapped all the football instinct from the underclassmen. It just felt like every big play on that side of the ball was a fluke. Dude wasn't ready to coach in the SEC. Thank God Sal's here.

Might generate some heat, but I think Wilcox did reasonably well considering last year's offense was one of the worst the SEC has seen in years, and in the running for worst UT offense of all-time. After Bray and Hunter were out, we just flat-out didn't have any good, or even decent players on offense, except Darick and even he was inconsistent. We were bottom 30 in the country in turnover margin and TOP in the latter 2/3 of the season. You'll eventually get overrun by any team that's even halfway decent if you can't maintain possession.

All that said, I think Wilcox got an unduly bad rap. But such is the nature of pre-season hype.

Also, and I hate sounding like a sore loser, but I still maintain that Kentucky's lone touchdown against us was the closest thing you'll ever see to a gift from the refs. The final score of that game should have been 7-3.

I think Wilcox is and will be a great coach, but I do not think Boise State's defense fell off very much when he left... Not bashing him in any way, I am just saying that their defense looked the same before he left and after he left..

Having said that I think Wilcox will go on to do great things somewhere...

I am really exited about Sal.. I will admit I wasn't really crazy about the hire when it was announced, but I have really became excited the more I see and learn about him..
