The murder of Ahmaud Arbery

I think they're guilty of murder, but I'm not a fan of the hate crime charge in any situation. It doesn't get evenly or fairly applied, and any crime of this level carries elements of hate. To illustrate my point, were the murderers of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom charged with hate crimes? What was done to those two was pure evil, and should have qualified as a hate crime if anything does. But they were white, and straight. What was done to Ahmaud Arbery was horrible, and wrong. Those men deserve to be punished. Just not a fan of the whole "hate crime" thing.

I think criminal charges should be results based. Is killing someone because they are gay, black or whatever any worse than killing someone because you wanted to watch a person die? I don't see a difference and think the hate crime charges should be abolished.

It's not the killings that's the issue, it's the lesser "crimes" like free speech. You burn an American flag it's free speech. You burn a sodomy flag, it's a hate crime. This is the point of hate crimes.

So why aren’t we discussing this trial at all? It is after all going on now too. Thus far I’d call the defendant’s testimony rather uncompelling
Because for some reason the media and BLM protestors are not as active on this story compared with the Rittenhouse trial.

I think it may be because this one is almost assuredly to end in conviction.

That doesn't change my view of hate crimes. Is burning a flag protected... yes. No crime. Look at the results. If someone stole a rainbow flag and burned it then they should be charged accordingly. No hate crime.

And why the bigotry in your post? Secret desire to become a power bottom?

I think it’s also that there’s no tribal conflict over this one. Is there anybody left seriously defending these guys in a public forum?

Unless some compelling evidence emerging and admittedly I'm not watching this trial closely, then these guys look guilty of killing Arbery. It doesn't matter that Arbery went in a partially built house. What was he going to do, put a pallet of bricks on his back? They pretty much chased the guy down with a gun then dared him to surrender to them. All he knows is they were going to kill him.

I hope guilty verdicts are coming.

Not that it matters but I was under the impression it was a house under renovation, not an empty structure.

I will have to look back but I thought it was being finished. Definitely renovating is different than being built.

My business is located in Brunswick and it's been surprisingly quiet here. I did see a couple of tour busses parked close to the courthouse the other day. Hopefully they won't be shipping in any outside protestors. I don't mind local people peacefully protesting but if they start shipping in thugs to burn and destroy things here in SE GA, things aren't going to end very well, I can promise that.
I don't really have a strong opinion one way or the other as I haven't really kept up with it that much. It definitely does not seem like Arbery was up to any good. With that being said, there was absolutely no reason for him to be shot the way he was. I hope and pray the proper amount of justice will be served. I'm glad I'm not part of the jury.

It was a preexisting home that was being renovated, but it was empty. It's an investment property and the owner lives elsewhere. From the security camera footage, it looks like the place was pretty well gutted, with part of it being open to the elements.

Thanks for clarifying.

What would you consider the "proper amount of justice?"

I am of the opinion of 20-life would be the proper amount.

Let's all take a lesson from this. It's not about being partisan. It's about fairness and consistency.

It's possible these guys get found neglient if they had no intent to kill when they set out on this chase. Those in legal - is 2nd degree as high as we're looking at? I haven't looked it up lately.

Intent is formed in an instant. What they started off intending to do has little to do with the result. The defense put that idiot on the stand because they are trying for sympathy. They don't get the benefit of self defense when they chased this guy down and when they had exhausted him and left him feeling cornered he charged. Then the guy killed him.

Meh, havent watched this trial but from the video and little I have seen regarding the deceased - This is not murder. Aubrey was not running away in the video, he was running toward the truck and then even ran toward and grabbed the gun.

Also, almost equally clear to me. The guy who shot him has some legal culpability in Aubrey's death. Lets say I accept Aubrey was casing the place, that at the last minute with the gun in his direction, he charged the shooter - still, shooter has some significant wrong in his actions. They had no business trying to stop him for a citizens arrest. Follow and observe and direct the police (whom they called) to deal with the situation.

My gut tells me it should be something like negligent homicide and the guy serve 5-7 years. Dont think he is guilty of murder but he is guilty of something (stupidity for sure). Who knows how it will turn out though and could be evidence that I am not aware of.

The proper amount of justice is a guilty verdict. The length is up to the judge according to the crime instead of us trying to play arbitors.

So, it would be justice if a jury convicted him of murder and the judge sentenced them to 100 hours of community service?
