The NCAA is a shameful organization.

Yep, the same university whose president and athletic director conspired to cover up unspeakable crimes for over a decade so PSU could pack the house as Joe Paterno pursued the all-time wins record.

The same university whose president and athletic director are no longer the president and athletic director.

The former president and athletic director are completely isolated from this NCAA punishment. 100% of the people who will be affected by this are innocent.

you support this punishment, right/? if so can you answer the question?

I don't support all of the sanctions, but I understand the NCAA's position.

I thought the scholarship reductions were severe. I was okay with the bowl ban and $60M fine. PSU placed their football program above the safety of children, so have no problem with the NCAA levying a fine equal to the revenue the football program brings in.

There is no perfect solution and life isn't fair. I know many innocent people who lost hundreds of thousands of dollars when Worldcom went under, due to the unethical actions of a few very powerful people. So you'll have to excuse me if PSU fans not having a good football team to cheer for doesn't register very high on my "give a $h!t" meter. At least they still have a team...the NCAA considered a four year suspension of the program.

Question: Who put JoePa on a god-like pedestal and basically said "You do whatever the hell you want. You are Penn State"?

Answer: The fans, community, students, alumni, etc.

I'll probably get creamed for this, but so be it. You know why I feel like this punishment needed to be handed out? Because this was a message to everybody else "Don't give your coach absolute power or **** will hit the fan." That is what Penn State (and when I mean Penn State, I'm talking about the "innocent" you mention) did, which led to JoePa wanting to maintain his god-like stature, and helped led to the cover up. This is basically saying "Keep football in perspective." I get that the NCAA is a hack organization. But they got it right there. Penn State gave absolute power to JoePa. They deserved to be punished.

Collateral damage. The NCAA made an example of Penn State...right, wrong or indifferent.

This case was unprecedented, and the NCAA was forced to send a message.

So...how many of them actually covered up the crime?

Then the NCAA should never punish any school for anything because it's impossible to deal out punishment without hurting others.

The people y'all should be mad at is the leadership of PSU for CHOOSING to cover up and allow little boys to be raped. I (maybe for the 1st time ever) applaude the NCAA.

Those men are dead or headed to prison. I've still yet to see a single post that actually explains how the NCAA's punishment was necessary in light of the legal system's involvement.

Because something bad happened, so the NCAA has got to do something!!!1!

How's that?

The Prez, VP. AD and head coach are the leaders of the University and represent the school and therefore the school gets the punishment. Just like EVERY time the AA punishes it's always after the bad doers are gone. One of the reasons for punishment is to set an example. I guarantee you it is much less likely that we'll see leaders of schools (Prez, VP, AD) get involved in cover ups anytime soon, no matter how small.

And what makes you think that? The threat of NCAA punishment, or the threat of spending the several years behind bars?

What? You change my post? Nice.

Look I dislike the NCAA as much as anyone. But in this case they finally did the right thing and I applaud them.

And yet you aren't willing to make the argument that their actions provide a greater deterrent than the legal system's. So basically you're just a fan of vengeance?

Neither provides a deterrent, otherwise there would be no murderers, rapists, thieves or child molesters. Some crimes are punishable by death, yet those crimes still get committed in spite of the possible consequences.

Likewise, Bama's most recent NCAA sanctions didn't act as a deterrent for Ohio State or North Carolina.
