The Numbers Thread

By the way, this is a much, much better conversation, IMO, than all the ridiculousness that has gone on in the TG and QD threads...

Chig, Leb, I'm all for a reasonable conversation. That's why the bashing and name-calling in the football forum turns me off so much, and I think the incessant call to not forget the current number of scholarships available is contributing to the furor in the RF (making it too much like the FF). I get exactly what you are saying, Leb, regarding the number of scholarships being 16. Do you think CBJ would take more commitments than 16 before he frees up more scholarships? If Kahlil, Settle, Jones, Richmond, DeBerry, and Van Jefferson all decided to commit next week, would Butch turn any away?

The current numbers are facts. Any conversation that supposes who would be a take and who would not be a take, while implementing excellent educated guesses, would be pure speculation unless Butch Jones himself or one of his staff members gives us information. Any talk of who will join the 2015 class is speculation.

Then ultimately we agree. What you said about the bashing is why I was sticking up for Leb. I've told Leb that even the number crunching gets annoying to me to an extent, but to disregard his info strictly because of that is not fair. Numbers are facts, and we ALL constantly speculate on here. No reason for anyone to be hateful. I'm sure that Leb's feelings won't be terribly hurt if people put him on ignore.

I think that is why recruiting seems to be going so slow for UT right now. As of now, CBJ is waiting on certain guys and other guys(some of which fans think are sure takes) are being slow played and or back up options. to see how the scholarship spots play out. With guys like DJ Jones, Settle, DeBerry all waiting a while to decide, it sets up well for UT to allow their scholarship numbers play out a little before they just start taking commitments with nowhere to put them. Most have read my opinion on some of these kids and while they are up near the top on the kids list, I just don't see them coming into play for us. DeBerry and Settle are a couple that I don't think our numbers matter with because IMO they are not coming to Tennessee. IMO the next interesting scenario will be Late July/Aug. They add Martin and McKenzie we are at 14 commitments with 16 spots. My guess was Sapp and Jefferson would be next to do something. Does CBJ take them both at that point or does he hold out for Richmond in Sept for 1 of the spots? Maybe by Sept, another kid has decided he is leaving and you take all 3. Of course a lot of the who's a take and who's not is speculation. But when VQ, 247, or anyone else predicts something, that too is speculation.

In some cases I have recommended it:eek:lol:. I'm me and not the kind of person to really change. If I am a problem for someone, ignore would probably be best. :p

I'll admit it's kind of funny to see all the crying in the threads STILL about "numbers" and such when I am not even commenting. "LV this, LV that" and I'm not even saying anything. Now they are bumping old comments I made because there are no new ones to complain about. Sorry Freak, We tried.:eek:lol:

Something i was thinking about, this August 7th autonomy vote for the big 5 conferences. When it passes couldnt they have the right to do away with these numbers limitations if they so choose?

Wouldnt that be interesting?

I'm sure it would be something addressed very early on if a change is made.

Also, just to be clear, there will be no talk of BBQ and or Baseball in the Numbers Thread. Keep that nonsense to the recruits threads. Thanks.

I get that is technically true.

I've also pointed out while that is the case, the staff did not "over sign" last year when they had a lot of talented kids wanting in late. The coaches only took as many kids as they knew they had spots for as of NSD.

Could they try and "over sign" this year? Possibly. I'm not going to automatically say they will so I can claim the class will be 24-25 or more.

No. That's not the case. UT was up against the SEC limit last year even after getting to back count the early enrollees.

This year is the 85 limit. The only thing that matters is that UT has space for kids as they arrive on campus.

We will sign between approximately 25 kids in this class. Just gotta stay under the 85. And we've got about 14 months to have attrition for that space to be created. Simple as pie.

It will be closer to 20 than 25 imo. At some point at calling out 25 as the number, or even 20, you have to start going through the roster and start predicting who is going to 'leave'. While not a fun conversation I think that is one that has to be had at some point. Just hate that we have to lose Vols to get Vols.

I am always surprised to see how quick Vol fans can turn on a kid who chose to be a Vol. He goes to class, he does the right things, he is just a borderline SEC talent as a SO or JR. "Drop em" is all too often the opinion around here. I'd rather see our coaches coaching up the kids already here. It's kind of their job and IMO should be priority 1 vs clearing out the roster for the next group coming in. If your always focused on recruiting the next group vs coaching the last group, your never going to build an SEC championship roster.

So looks like Tennessee leads for Olenga at DE. Q. Johnson at DT, Bruce now holds an offer, and Woods was just on campus and took a photo with CBJ mentioning "his future head coach".

I may have mis-spoke, sorry for the confusion. Should have said in there I don't want to see anybody leave. Your post is exactly how I feel, I was more pointing out that the people who want to take 25 means 8-9 (I am no LV on the numbers so not sure :) ) more players would have to leave.
