The Numbers Thread

I'd rather have QBs on our roster that fight for a starting job and don't high tail it out of dodge before they have even begun to try.

I'd like to see it at all positions. Of course the over signing leads to a lot of it. If the fans cheer on the huge classes, just stands to reason kids will be hitting the door at a rapid pace.

Well they don't have the grit to stick it out then they need to leave. Championships are not won by guys that leave due to a little adversity.

Perhaps, but he was just quoted as saying he had no problem with competition, so what does it matter if he will be competing with 3 rather than 2 QBs?

Most recruits will look at things in an unbiased manner if possible. Not so much like a fan. Over signing, will almost always have recruits on edge.

"We took 0-1 QB in 2015, they took 3. Even after taking your commitment and telling you that you were "it", they are offering other QBs".

I'd think most recruits would listen very closely to this sort of thing. Imo, they should.

If Kendall really has a serious problem with Butch signing 3 QBs in this class I don't imagine he would need another HC to tell him he should be concerned about it. The fact that he actually said he is not concerned about competition leads me to believe that he actually might not be afraid of competition. And while other HCs might be telling Kendall that he will face competition at UT, Butch will be countering by telling him that true warriors thrive on competition. And in the end, if the competition does scare him away then UT was not the best fit for him anyway.

I think when they told Dormady and Jennings they were it we still had Peterman coming back and Dobbs was still redshirting. But having to take the RS off Dobbs meant one less yr he would be here now and knowing Nate was transferring we would have one scholarship QB and technically he could go pro after this yr. Not saying that would ever happen and he is nowhere close to being one but still stranger things have happened. Then it has continued to sound like the coach's see Jennings being a better fit at safety or another position. Then albeit it a very small chance but still a chance nonetheless they run the risk or having only one scholly QB again after this season in Dormady.Again that scenario playing out like that with Dobbs is less than 1% but still would be a devastating to happen. And If Jones ddoesn't decommit from Florida I doubt they would have pursued any other QB except Francois. But a talent and potential like S.Jones you don't turn down if you have a legitimate shot at him.Numbers and depth will work themselves out but with Worley and Nate being gone you are just begging for trouble with only having one true QB in Dormady behind Dobbs, who was having shoulder another problem then a work in progress QB in Jennings who likely is playing a different position after this yr. Really don't see how they couldn't bring in a third QB, especially one a highly recruited as Sheririon was.We will get another highly rated QB this class even if Kendall goes elsewhere. Hope we can hang onto him though.

I hope he sticks as well. I can just fully understand why he would be doubting what UT was selling him on at this point.

I'd also point out 2014. Fans were sure taking multiple QBs in 2013 wouldn't have 2014 kids shy away. That proved to be very wrong even with UT taking a huge class.

Over signing matters. Most recruits and their families pay attention to these things. Especially when all that over signing leads to transfers and a revolving door on the place.

I'm hoping at some point it all slows down. I've been looking forward to some JR & SR heavy graduating classes in the future. Hopefully.

Saban oversigns. I can't wait to start having his problems.

Bama signed 1QB in 2012, 2 in 2013, 1 in 2014, and 1 in 2015. Imo, reasonable.

You're stuck on QBs. The talk around the SEC is that Saban oversigns RBs. Case in point a friend of mine who is a Bama fan who was underwhelmed when 5* RB Damien Harris signed wIth Bama. And then former 4* Tenpenny transfers. To me that is an ok problem to have.

It's apparent Saban puts less emphasis on the number of *'s than you do.

I agree with your point that we need to even out the number of QBs we take every year, but I don't think Bama had just one QB on the scholarship any of those years.

Also, I don't think having a top flight QB is as important for their style of offense as ours. They won a championship with McElroy and went 12-0 with John Parker Wilson after all.

When we get to a point where we have four quality scholarship QBs on a consistent basis, we can afford to take less in a class. When you're down to one scholarship QB you do what Butch just did...take care of the program...can't recruit scared and be held hostage to the whims of a teenager JMO FWIW NAACP

I'd have just taken the 2 EEs. What does the 3rd really do? Imo nothing. All 3 will not stay. All taking the 3rd did was add a body and adding that body may have cost you the best QB in the 2016 class. No more experience with Jones, he'll even be coming in behind the other guys. You know your starter is Dobbs. I'd have had Dormady as my #2, Jennings as my #3 and hope to RS him. I already had Kendall in 2016. After I saw how the 2 EEs did early on, I would then consider a 2nd in 2016 with losing Peterman. Much more likely they stick around. Much more likely the time spent coaching them is time well spent. Sneaking in the 3rd guy after the EEs were in Imo just assures you of problems coming. I get it the fans will ignore it and make excuses for it. When it happens they will just call the kid a quitter. It's played out the same time after time.

IMO I think we lose Kendall here shortly and picking up Oden will be alright. We'll see if he sticks long term. I've said it from the beginning I see Jones as the odd man out. Imo just too many things going against him to still be a Vol beyond year 1.

I am so very glad you are not in charge of recruiting. In fact it is a blessing you are as far away from UT as you can be and still be in the US. Take up a new hobby, hula making. You can count the number of Palm frond stems it take and give us a detailed report. At least then you might have some practical knowledge to impart.
If Kendall goes elsewhere, so what. We are in on a couple other good ones for 16 and a really good one for 17. It will work out. Without your input.

Jones is better than Jennings.

Jennings gets his 1 year at QB, doesn't work, gets moved to FS.

2016 rolls around and Kendall is looking at:

Sr - Dobbs
So - Dormady
So - Jones

Plus a walk-on or two.

That's a pretty good looking situation to walk in to. JMO IMO UNICEF
