The Numbers Thread

That's the same model Saban used to rebuild Bama so quickly. Oversigning and then run off the kids that don't pan out. Butch's entire philosophy for this program is competing at all positions, no one can get comfortable or complacent. However, the rebuilding is almost complete and you will see less oversigning with each coming class as the numbers equal out.

Exactly. Such an easy concept to grasp if you aren't stubborn and don't have hours of life and thousands of posts dedicated to a futile stance that the coaches don't know what they're doing and are going to run the program into the ground by having a handful of players leave (when it's necessary to stay under scholarship limits, no less).

Handful, fifteen, close enough. LOL

Exactly. If you start seeing guys in the 2 deep starting to leave, then maybe we have a problem. The kids leaving right now see the talent that is currently on the roster in front of them as well as the talent in the incoming class. They're then pulling the trigger on going elsewhere to ensure they get PT, it's not that hard to understand. And that's not even counting guys that are headed out of the program due to academic and/or drug issues.

This x1000. And you won't see guys in the two deep leaving. The creme rises to the top.

This staff is NOT taking on projects they are expected to win and win now, they don't have time for a player to mature and develop and become a starter by the time he is a redshirt Sophmore or Junior.

2 deep?

But we've got to have QBs 6-7 deep and RBs 8 deep.

"They will wait their their turn".

I suppose when they realize how expendable they are not being in the "2 deep", we'll need some more 30+ classes. LOL

If true, that isn't a good thing my friend.

"Don't have the time to develop them". Yikes

I've never said they'll wait their turn. If the staff keeps recruiting at this level, a sophomore with 2 guys ahead of him is in all likeliness gone due to the possibility that a younger guy could pass him. People make attrition out to be a horrible thing. It isn't if the lesser talents leave. It makes the team more competitive and refills the talent stockpile. College football, unfortunately, is a business and not being a top performer means you will probably get managed out.

Looking at bamas O/D starters for 2014, 18 of the 22 were JRs or SRs. They look like they are taking time to develop them.

Yep, and just like the Tide, we will get to that point in 2 years where the starters are JRs or SRs. We aren't losing starters to attrition, mainly just players that know they might not get PT due to being recruited over.
