How is the bulding of a cultural center that contains an area for prayer being equated with burning the holy book of another religion?
Nonsense.

How does burning a bible, Quran or flag warrant a news story? Hell, I burned a bunch of old books in my backyard last week and was wondering why Fox was not there.![]()
This guy indirectly is doing us a favor. If the US sits idly by and lets controversial after controversial scenario run in Islam's favor then we as a nation are not showing what makes this country great. Islam just like all religions that came before to America will have to face adversity in order for it to become tolerant, if not we become the new Baltic.

Any area with a dedicated space to the worship of Allah would be considered a mosque. It is no different than any other church that also has community center space, gyms fields for sports etc, we don't call them community centers we call them churches. Trying to separate the two is a little simplistic isn't it?
I agree that one is an outright provocation while the other situation is more complex. We simply don't know what is in the minds and hearts of those behind the community center/mosque. We have an idea but it is clear that the reasoning behind this project isn't altruistic by any means.
Now two other churches -- the Westboro Baptist Church and some nutjob pastor in Tennesse -- are going to burn Qurans. Jones is claiming the Imam is a liar. A mosque in Arizona was attacked today with paint and rocks defacing it.
Ridiculous.

Who has said categorically that they do not have a right to build there because of religious reasons? What I find interesting about the reactions to these situations is how many of those opposed to the building of the mosque have called on the government to ignore this right by prohibiting the building of it; whereas no one is saying that the burning of the Quran should be prohibited.
No. The reactions by liberals and muslims are ridiculous. And to call the burning of the Quran "fairly insignificant" is ridiculous. Try selling that one to the soldiers on the front line.
Depends on what you are calling the right and who you accept as "Christian". Both terms are broadly used... and abused. What you fail to realize is that MANY Christians see the right as anti-Christians as well.
I have come to think at this point that it would be a very gracious act by the New York Imam to decide to move the cultural center some distance, no matter how minimal, from the current proposed location. I don't like the notion of him doing that under pressure because I think that sends the wrong message, i.e. that the shrill voices of ignorance and bigotry (see above) can win out over measured and sound thinking. But if it would serve the larger purpose of convincing folks like you, sjt and gsvol, that not all of Islam is "out to get us," then it would probably worth it.
If he moves it because of this loon Jones, then I just flat give up.

Perhaps its been said, but what I find interesting is that a few "extreme" Christians are threatening the burning of books; on the other hand, there seem to be quite a few "extreme" muslims (or perhaps more representative of the norm) who are threatening with killings, bombings, etc.
Do people still want to debate that Christians and Muslims are equal when it comes to violence and their beliefs?
If he decides to move the location it will be because the overwhelming majority of Americans believe it is in poor taste to build there. The loons on either side will have had about as much to do with it as I have on the outcome of a Vol football game on Saturdays.
If it does get moved, the right will take credit for pushing him into it. But that's momentary, and relative to the goodwill it would earn at a tough moment I could live with that.

Here's a good list on condemning this book burning. This is an ad going to the NYT. Quite a diverse group of Christians here as well.
