The Nutjobs threatening to burn Qurans thread (merged)

How is the bulding of a cultural center that contains an area for prayer being equated with burning the holy book of another religion?

Nonsense.

Can you see now why MANY Christians see the left as anti-Christian?

I'm sorry to break this to ya, but politics is one of the biggest, most anti-Christian entities in the human catalog. It's right up there with Louisiana Satanic Death Metal.

This guy indirectly is doing us a favor. If the US sits idly by and lets controversial after controversial scenario run in Islam's favor then we as a nation are not showing what makes this country great. Islam just like all religions that came before to America will have to face adversity in order for it to become tolerant, if not we become the new Baltic.

How does burning a bible, Quran or flag warrant a news story? Hell, I burned a bunch of old books in my backyard last week and was wondering why Fox was not there.:p

I found about a dozen old Gideon New Testaments in my garage this weekend and threw them away because they were disgusting. I suppose I'll have picketers outside my house now.....

Any area with a dedicated space to the worship of Allah would be considered a mosque. It is no different than any other church that also has community center space, gyms fields for sports etc, we don't call them community centers we call them churches. Trying to separate the two is a little simplistic isn't it?

I agree that one is an outright provocation while the other situation is more complex. We simply don't know what is in the minds and hearts of those behind the community center/mosque. We have an idea but it is clear that the reasoning behind this project isn't altruistic by any means.

Common sense and LG do not cross paths very often.

It just me, or does Terry Jones share a bit of a resemblance to that pervis in Austria that held his daughter captive in a cellar for 20 years?

Never trust a creepy old guy with a mustache.

Now two other churches -- the Westboro Baptist Church and some nutjob pastor in Tennesse -- are going to burn Qurans. Jones is claiming the Imam is a liar. A mosque in Arizona was attacked today with paint and rocks defacing it.

Ridiculous.

And all of this could be avoided if American libs especially those in politics, media, and academia would stand with the rest of us and DEMAND that the Islamic world show respect and tolerance for non-muslims as a basis for a peace process.

Instead, you guys overemphasize people like those you listed above who represent a small minority while dismissing mass protests in the Islamic world where chants of "Death to America, Death to Jews, Death to Christians" are voiced by frenzied throngs of thousands. You recoil in absolute horror that anyone would protest the building of a mosque at ground zero but seemingly have no problem with Christians being murdered under sharia law in Islamic countries.

IOW's, you have no answer and want to evade by dismissing. Why don't you just be honest for once and admit you have no answer?

What I find interesting about the reactions to these situations is how many of those opposed to the building of the mosque have called on the government to ignore this right by prohibiting the building of it; whereas no one is saying that the burning of the Quran should be prohibited.
Who has said categorically that they do not have a right to build there because of religious reasons?

Because Islam is theocratic, I believe there is very good reason to find out who is financially backing this mosque. I believe that makes this Imam's political statements very relevant.

But as far as I've seen, no credible person has said they do not have a "right" to build there.

And to call the burning of the Quran "fairly insignificant" is ridiculous. Try selling that one to the soldiers on the front line.
No. The reactions by liberals and muslims are ridiculous.
Muslims go out of their way to be offensive in their public protests and the left goes mute... or worse blames us for the fact that THEY hate.

Liberals have the same attitude toward the Islamic world that women have toward abusive men. They think they can change them if they just try to please them. The fact is people only change when THEY want to change.

We CAN'T change them we can only react in an appropriate way.
What you fail to realize is that MANY Christians see the right as anti-Christians as well.
Depends on what you are calling the right and who you accept as "Christian". Both terms are broadly used... and abused.

If you allow those who hold beliefs contrary to the NT to claim the title "Christian" then, yeah, there are some who assert that conservatism is "anti-Christian".

This tends to a deeper theological debate that I might enjoy having... but probably isn't to be had here.

I have come to think at this point that it would be a very gracious act by the New York Imam to decide to move the cultural center some distance, no matter how minimal, from the current proposed location. I don't like the notion of him doing that under pressure because I think that sends the wrong message, i.e. that the shrill voices of ignorance and bigotry (see above) can win out over measured and sound thinking. But if it would serve the larger purpose of convincing folks like you, sjt and gsvol, that not all of Islam is "out to get us," then it would probably worth it.

If he moves it because of this loon Jones, then I just flat give up.

Perhaps its been said, but what I find interesting is that a few "extreme" Christians are threatening the burning of books; on the other hand, there seem to be quite a few "extreme" muslims (or perhaps more representative of the norm) who are threatening with killings, bombings, etc.

Do people still want to debate that Christians and Muslims are equal when it comes to violence and their beliefs?

If he decides to move the location it will be because the overwhelming majority of Americans believe it is in poor taste to build there. The loons on either side will have had about as much to do with it as I have on the outcome of a Vol football game on Saturdays.

I find fascinating the argument that, because they are not as enlightened as we are, we should retreat Chirstianity to 15th century levels of tolerance, too.

Brilliant.

If it does get moved, the right will take credit for pushing him into it. But that's momentary, and relative to the goodwill it would earn at a tough moment I could live with that.

wow.....you missed that point by a dang mile.....but, that a boy.....get that talking point in there

"the right" will give the credit where it belongs....to the families of the victims of 9/11......you remember them don't you
