The "Occupy" Rallies

Didn't Obama give advice to the Egyptian government at the beginning of the year on how to deal with protesters? To like, you know, respect "universal human rights" to peaceful assembly and protest. And to avoid using violence against peaceful protest? Anyone else remember that?

Really? Sitting on a sidewalk is mayhem? It qualifies riot gear? If the cops have so much authority, why don't they simply pick them up and arrest them instead of pepper spraying them?

Some of the conservatives here are ardently defending a disgusting display of unnecessary force by the police, which goes against the very foundations of personal liberty, freedom of expression, and small government.

It's truly pathetic what we as American citizens have become. You're inadvertently endorsing martial law.

It's a ****ing sidewalk. Boo ****ing hoo.

I have been arrested and taken to jail for "blocking a sidewalk". It happened because a police officer went on a power trip, simple as that. It didn't make anyone feel safe. It made everyone feel threatened by the use of excessive force and unnecessary action on the part of the police. If anything the police are making the Occupy situation much, much worse. All of the major drama that I've seen has come from police interaction. Everything else has been what you would call a "peaceful protest".

he also said nothing about the Iranians cracking down on their protesters. Not sure I get your point

I have never joined a protest so Im speaking out of ignorance to a degree, but isn't this what your looking for when you protest? Not specifically getting sprayed, but the "occupy" crowd is front and center in the media when law enforcement is there and taking action. If the law doesn't show up and make a move, I have no idea that "occupy" is on campus at UC Davis.

The only way the UC-Davis incident does not make the news is if LE does not show up and take action. Analogously, the only way Syria does not make the news is if Assad's forces do not show up and take action.

What is "public property"? Who has rights to "public property"? What actions constitute the limiting of those rights?

No point in making a point out of it. Take it for what it's worth. :)

And if there is any point to be taken, it's that this issue that the President addressed to Egypt has now struck home. A bit ironic if you ask me!

I own a land surveying company, I understand public/private property well enough.

Controversial Claim of the Day - The Daily What

Couple thoughts:
Pepper spray can get to a fetus? If they can prove that it'll have an impact far beyond what happened here.

The use of the phrase “I didn’t know that a cop would murder a baby that’s not born yet…I am trying to get lawyers.” for someone in the 1st trimester has some stickiness to it.

provided this is true, what kind of person puts their unborn child in that position? Also saying they knew exactly what caused the miscarriage seems a little far-fetched

So you think she disregard personal responsibility regarding her health along with her baby.

As for whatever has gone down elsewhere, I'd guess from personal experience, that the cases of police causing injury are more numerous than those of the protesters. And just like with any violent incident, whether it be with police or with protesters, those incidences are going to be put on the stage front, maybe influencing our perspective more than they rightly should. I relate it to why cops get a bad wrap in the outlook of a fair number of people, specifically young adults. We all know most cops are good and decent people, but then there are crooked ones who seem to ruin it for the rest. So say what you will about them, they are "dirty hippies" who need to get a job, deserve getting pepper sprayed, whatever. The majority are decent and good people who go out there to get behind an idea they genuinely believe in. The basis behind the "Occupy" protests remain entirely valid in my book, but to each their own. :hi:
