The Office: Season 8

That was one of the best episodes of the entire series. Looks like they are going to finish strong.

great episode, it was really funny. the Jim-Dwight team is just too funny. they should have done that more than play the queer agenda this year.

Last night's episode was great (the whole assistant situation), as was last week's. I was skeptical of how the show would hold after SC left but of the episodes I've seen without him haven't been half bad. I think they've held alright although I don't care for the new additions. At least they haven't tanked bad. I think its ending on a good note. Next week should be great.

The last 2 weeks have been good but overall I've thought Seasons 8 and 9 have been pretty bad. Just way too much bad writing, and making Ed Helms the main character was a huge mistake IMHO. In fact I think his parts kept last night from being great.

The way they've set up the finale, I just can't see how SC can't make at least a small cameo. It's going to take place 6 months after the documentary aired and is supposed to show where everyone is now. I mean they could just say what he's doing and that he couldn't make it for the "reunion" but it just seems wrong if he's not on there in some way.

Which BTW maybe this is picky, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around them still filming when the documentary starts airing. They said it airs in 9 nights, which I would guess would set it up so that 1 night = 1 year, since they've been filming 9 years. I'm throwing out logic since it would be ridiculous for a crew to film for 9 years, but if it is 1 night = 1 year, are they going to be editing Night 9 days before it airs?

Andy Bernard should never have been more than a peripheral character.

Last two episodes really reminded me why I love this show. Going to be sad to see it go but I understand it's time for it to go. The way they are setting up the final show I just don't see how SC cannot be in it even if it's just for a few minutes.

I liked Andy as manager last season but his character has changed this year. He is really hard to like at all. I wouldn't say he is a the main character though. He wasn't even in 6 or so episodes this season.

This past week's episode was probably the best in a 3-4 season. I'm really going to miss the Jim/Dwight friendship.

Andy was at his best as a peripheral character, once he started becoming part of the storyline it was awful. Of course, the show as a whole was heading down the crapper at that point.

This. Andy was great as a supporting character, although his character started to sour on me when they started the whole Erin thing in Season 6.

But as manager he's been awful. I don't blame it all on Ed Helms, as I think the writers had no idea how to deal with him. They tried to avoid making him Michael Lite, then made him a complete jackass, then made him straight up Michael Lite and by then it was just a complete mess and I think most stopped caring.

I wouldn't go that far. It definitely couldn't hold "Goodbye Michael" 's jockstrap.

They really botched it with Carrell leaving. They really needed to bring in a new character, and not that obnoxious British woman.

I think she is really what made the show even worse without SC. I think if they had gone in a different direction instead of making her a main focus point the show might have been better.

Yeah, for whatever reason the writers, particularly Paul Lieberstein (Toby) were in love with her. The original plan was for her to be made branch manager but there was such an outcry that they scrapped it. But for some reason they didn't take the hint that the outcry was because everyone hated her, and they brought her back halfway through Season 8 and then even more incredibly made her a cast member for Season 9.

I didn't think that episode was all that. Personally I thought SC's character was played out. His last two seasons were pretty weak. I actually thought Season 8 was better than than 6 and 7.

I know I'm in the minority on that.

I'm in the same boat. I don't understand why everybody is so interested in whether he'll make a return for the finale. They've long since mined every nugget of comedy they could from that character.

As for whether season 8 being better than 6 and 7, I don't know. I feel all three were just about equally bad. The show peaked in season 3, with 4 and 5 being appreciably worse and then it just fell off the cliff after that. It's one of those kind of deals where you can't win. Shows like Arrested Development are remembered so fondly because they were "cut down in their prime", but shows like The Office get the opportunity to run their course and suck by the time it's all said and done. Very few shows (Seinfeld is one example) manage to go out at or near the top of their game. I think The Office would be viewed a lot differently if NBC had had to cancel it after season 3, and we really wouldn't have missed out on all that much great material. There were a few moments after that, but unlike seasons 2 and 3, where just about every episode was spot on, the laughs really got few and far between after that.

I agree with that for the most part. Season 8 was nowhere near the level of 2-3 or even 4-5, but I liked james spader's character. When I say it was better I mean marginally.

You are right though. Very few shows that last over 3-4 season ever go out at their peak. Seinfeld and Cheers are the only 2 I can really think of. Even Seinfeld took a noticeable dip when Larry David left after S7.

IMO it wasn't as much of a noticeable DIP, as much as it was a noticeable CHANGE. The episodes in seasons 8 and 9 are just different, but the quality was still there. Some of my favorite ones from the show come from those final two years.

I don't disagree MS was running thin, in fact the show should have ended after Season 5. I thought the introduction of Sabre was pretty bad.

Having said that I still think the worst SC episode has been better than almost anything from the past 2 seasons. I actually thought an SC less Office could work after the final 3 episodes of S7, but they completely botched Spader's character.

How bout them filming the camera guy talking to Pam wasn't that supposed to be a secret meeting where he could be in trouble? And yes as funny as Ed Helms and his character is/was, putting him as manager wasn't good. He and the foreign woman whose name I can't remember was crap. Of course Jim and Pam kept it going. But we can't say that the writers did completely terrible... its not like SC is still with them. They did what they could and its still funny. Perhaps they should have let Dwight go straight to manager then. I think Stanley would've made a good boss and then move the attention away from the main office and make the sub characters more involved. Kevin is too funny.

Ricky Gervais would have been only way to keep level of program. Might have even raised it

I'd like to think he would have raised it. SC was good as Michael Scott and is pretty funny in some of his movies, but Gervais is on another level entirely from a comedy standpoint.

I am not a huge Gervais fan so I am not sure how it would have worked for me. I know a lot of people like him so it probably would have improved the show over having Nelly in it.

Last episode of The Office airs tonight. Kind of sad to see it go but I understand it's time.

I feel the same. It should have lasted no more than 6 seasons, probably really 5, but it's still going to be weird next season it not being on Thursday nights.
