The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Damn, @YankeeVol , where's the UT-UW game thread ? I'm jonesing for it. Biggest game of the OOC schedule, imo. Win and this young team's confidence goes sky high and we have a huge resume building win that is sure to send our RPI soaring, in game 3.

I was listening to Hyams and Wilkerson yesterday. There was a razor spot in heavy rotation with a jingle with the lyrics "shaving your balls" and something about your "nuts". Surely with the Vol Network in control of the feed we don't hear that commercial during the game if listening through iHeart.

No more snags or cuts when you shave these nutz. It's got to be a network spot that Cumulus is running. I can't believe that the local management would be airing that thing.

Can you give me the web number for that?

It runs on the stream through the iHeart app when choosing WNML. It's definitely not in the over the air rotation. I don't know if wnml.com mirrors the stream of iHeart or not. It was running like 4x an hour on Friday's John and Jimmy show. It's hilarious.

Some analysis on the season so far

We’ve beaten last years OVC champ.

We beat last years Pac 12 regular season champ, a top 25 team with high rated 5 star freshmen.

I think the sample size is large enough to assume Pons is for real. He is a stat stuffer. I think his ppg will flatten at around 10, but that is still great. This is one of the single biggest steps forward I’ve seen for a UT player from one year to another.

JJJ showed his potential in the UW game. Another stat stuffer. He has instincts and a feel for the game freshman rarely have. I saw it on a variety of plays like him jumping passing lanes, finding teammates on nice dimes, and most specifically, a particular move he made to the basket that started as a post up from 15 feet out. He demonstrated patience on the play like a much older player. I’m very excited to watch him develop.

Lamonte might give us our first triple double this year since Tyler Smith. He got dangerously close against UW.

Speaking of Turner, when his shot starts falling, it’s gonna be lights out for teams. Much of our progress so far has been with Turner struggling from the field.

Fulkerson looks more disciplined this year. He still has a way to go there because he still fouls a bit too much, but all around he has improved in that area.

Bowden is Bowden. He became a phantom again in a large part of the 2nd half last night, but you’ll take it with his point barrages he has so routinely done throughout his career. I think Bowden gets drafted. Biggest area for him to work on for the next level would be his acceleration off the dribble.

There have been and will continue to be a lot of talk about minutes. In college you only play a couple games per week, I’ve never felt playing 30+ minutes wears out 20 year olds. I don’t think we have a minutes issue, it’s more of an injury depth issue. Specifically at the post.

The SEC has struggled so far. I think we are clearly a top team in the league.

Grant Ramey said they may get a specialist involved with Turner. His shoulder is giving him problems when he has to raise his arm above his head. He also mentioned the games coming up are two of the weakest left on our schedule, so you could see some load management there if needed.

I would definitely rest him again southern, we shouldn’t need him.

38mpg though... and for someone struggling through injury...

Have they ever said what the issue is? I feel like we had another player previously who went in for surgery and it was unsuccessful.

Shoulder injuries have killed us. Hubbs, baulkman, now turner.

The shoulder injury curse is real. It's been a thing going back to the Pearl years. A few more:

Dane Bradshaw battled so many shoulder injuries that by his senior year he had tendinitis in both shoulders (and wrist injury no less) and could barely lift his arms by end of the season.

JP Prince had reconstructive shoulder surgery before his senior year, ultimately played through senior year with lingering injuries to both shoulders and ankles, played through visible pain all year but still balled out til the very end.

And if we're broadening the Senior injury/ailment curse to more than just shoulders, let's not forget Chris Lofton didn't have quite the Senior year everyone was expecting....then after the season was over, he revealed he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in and needed surgery to remove tumor in offseason before Senior year. Brutal
