Tennessee announced on Wednesday that redshirt sophomore Zach Kent had left the program on his own accord. The move itself wasn’t surprising, but the timing was a little odd. Many didn’t think Kent would even return to Knoxville this year as his chances for playing time appeared slim. He played a combined 10 minutes in the Vols’ first two games of the season and didn’t get into the game against Washington last weekend. Kent had been passed by freshmen Olivier Nkamhoua and Drew Pember in the rotation and barring injuries, wasn’t going to have a role on the team other than in an emergency situation. His departure does leave the Vols with only nine available scholarship players at the moment, which is less than ideal, but other than providing another body in practice it doesn’t appear that Kent was going to play a role this season.
-VQThe Vols passed their first test of the season with flying colors against Washington last weekend and will get another one next week in Destin when they take on Florida State and then either Purdue or VCU in the Emerald Coast Classic. Wednesday’s blowout win over Alabama State didn’t reveal much about this team but it did give Barnes a chance to get some young players some much needed work. Four games into the season extending the bench looks like a priority and Wednesday’s game was a step in the right direction on that front. Nkamhoua has clearly already demonstrated that he can help right away but Davonte Gaines and Drew Pember really helped their cause to earn more minutes by making some things happen when they got the chance.
Likely just a coincidence Kent opened up a spot for them when he did.Sorry to hear. He might be doing a McGhee move so that he can transfer and be eligible in January 2021 at a new school.
Edit: when I read that VQ post ("Tennessee announced on Wednesday that redshirt sophomore Zach Kent had left the program on his own accord.") I missed that it was from Wednesday and thought that it was an official "he gone" release on Thursday. So VQ calls it "left the program" while everywhere else they were saying "stepped away", "taking care of personal issues", "his decision", "has the full support of the program", etc. So I really don't know exactly what's going on here. Kind of sounds like VQ is saying "he gone" while all others aren't saying anything or are suggesting that his return to the program is still possible. All that while Santiago V may or may not be in town on an OV. Make it stop!
But there was a spot already open which is all that mattered for Vescovi, Kent didn’t need to leave for him to join the team. Someone would’ve needed to leave come May, but not before then...thus why they’re saying Kent could potentially rejoin the team.Because 10 +4 equals 14. Kids don't look at rosters before they sign? And one more has to depart if they still want a rim protector.
And now there's still a spot open for the rim protector if he's still in the works, no?But there was a spot already open which is all that mattered for Vescovi, Kent didn’t need to leave for him to join the team.
