Sorry to keep bringing up football but this area is more sane than the FF (for now). I see collectively the place is already in the same song and dance routine they were for Pruitt. I get overall you have to accept the reality but it's tiring to watch the same cycle happen where were say a big name is coming, we settle again and suddenly the guy we settled for is some secret genius hire.....I mean does this sound familar? And collectively we whine when talking heads talk about how unrealistic we are as a fanbase but then out of the other side of our mouths we say "It's a dumpster fire, who did you expect us to get?"
I'm sorry but you can't really have it both ways really. Either accept that we aren't the Vols program of the 90s and that's not coming back any time soon realistically, or if you DO think we are still that big name then you have to admit the hire is disappointing.
Rant over. I seriously think I'm going to retire from that place and only show up maybe on gamedays if even then. I'm kind of over the football program and I no longer have any expectations and I seriously think it will be at least 30 years between our SEC Championships if not longer.
I am with you. I am probably one of the more negative posters here about football. The hire is disappointing.
I will say, if every thing falls just right (hire a great DC, overperform expectations, and then land some unexpected recruits); I could see it maybe maybe working out. I wonder if they suspect that the uncertainty and penalties of this NCAA business is going to last up to 3 seasons. If that happens, you could see Heupel as a bridge hire. All that said, I've come to the realization that fandom is better when you sheep it up as best you can. By looking at the bright side at least you can enjoy the next few months before reality starts creeping in when we actually have to see the team play.
I guess to me the fanbase needs to figure out who we are. Are we a sleeping giant that is one great hire from returning to the top of the mountain or at least right near the peak? Or are we now Nebraska/Minnesota and the occasional SEC East division win and SECCG trip and/or NY6 Bowl is going to be the ceiling? Because based on how thing go in the FF, collectively we want to be treated as both when it benefits us. If we are the sleeping giant, then I would probably bet my next paycheck that in 3 years JH is going to be very unpopular and ready to run off. If it's the latter then JH might be here like 8 years or longer but it's likely the Citrus/Outback Bowl is his best accomplishment.
I know I'm talking about fans and in particular internet fans so asking for sanity is probably laughable, but it's just odd to watch how illogical the fanbase can be and how we seriously just repeat the same cycle. Maybe it's always been that way and the last 10 years has just opened my eyes to it. And I guess on one hand if we accept we aren't the 90s Vols anymore that shows some maturity, but at the same time if we are ok with 9-4 and Outback Bowls then maybe turning on Butch Jones wasn't completely fair (granted his last season he fell off a cliff).
I feel like the Vols football program is like a friend who keeps meeting a girl and says she's the one and you can see that it's probably going to turn out like the last one, unless he makes some changes in his expectations.
Nothing new. Every hire for the last decade has followed the same cycle.Sorry to keep bringing up football but this area is more sane than the FF (for now).
