The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

We expended every bit of energy beating Kentucky in the semi-finals, so hell no, losing to AU in the finals wasn't underachieving. What a stupid f'ing statement

Lol...GTFO with this weak bulls***. We didn't even show up in the SECT. You can't tout making the SECT as some great achievement then act like it's ok to lay an egg like that.

That's no affirmation of your opinion that UT underachieved the next day. Sorry

They lost by 15 and were the favorite that game so hell yeah I have affirmation they underachieved.

If you can bring up they were ranked 13th preseason and overachieved in year 3 (which is true) then I can say they were ranked #7 nationally and didn’t want anything meaningful and say they underachieved (which is true).

We've been in the top 15 for most of the season, so what are you standards? We're struggling now, but anyone who knows anything about the game knows how a basketball team, with this kind of personnel, can have a "roller coaster" kind of season

Way to completely ignore the part about us playing our best ball when the pandemic hit.

Didn’t win. Didn’t win the sec regular season title. Didn’t get to the elite 8. Top ten preseason. That’s underachieving.
Not necessarily. Preseason rankings are just a beginning gauge. Regular season is a much better indicator of talent/coaching

You can say this season has been an underachievement but I don’t think it represents Barnes as a coach.

He’s made the program respectable again considering the circumstances we went through with the NCAA.

Barnes is not an elite coach but he’s a good coach that can get you to the tournament every year.

If you want to focus on NCAA Tournament success then it’s fair to say he’s underachieved.

Hiring a HC that’s had more NCAA Tournament success than Barnes will be the biggest challenge. Hope I’m wrong.

Sure and I’m sure there is a certain brigade who is going to lose their mind about this but we are now paying him and rewarded him with elite level salary after making the program respectable after year 4. And assuming how this season is going hold that’s two straight years he will have underwhelming results. At some point he needs to produce more.

Like you bringing up preseason 13th in conference in year 3?

Barnes hasn’t won a conference tourney since 1994 and has made one FF in 30+ years of coaching...he’s not a good postseason coach.

I agree with this assessment

It's the truest narrative. It's not just mine

It's no more true than Auburn fighting to win by 3 over Florida the same day UT had to fight to beat UK. You just don't like that pointing that out hurts your narrative. Auburn laid all out to beat UF then kicked our asses.

I agree but I can understand why Boyd bumped up his salary. UCLA wanted to take a chance on him.

If they had let Barnes walk, who knows where our program would be right now.

True. I don't dislike it. It still doesn't affirm we underachieved. It's pretty ignorant to lay it on Barnes that we didn't shoot it well and had uncharacteristic turnovers, unless of course, your knowledge of the game is shallow

And I understood completely the situation.

But in year 6 and with the salary bump along with the talent he brought in this year, I think it’s fair to start expecting more in March. We aren’t there yet. If he can turn it around great.

Well not all of us have been to a Barnes practice like a basketball genius like you.
