I’ll be shocked if we make it out of the first weekend. This game and the Kentucky game both were very concerning. DK had to go for 40 to keep us in the Kentucky game and today, when it just wasn’t his day, we couldn’t even be competitive with a team that was sub .500 in conference play.

I hope these two games were just bad days at the office and that the supporting cast will get back in a groove, but I just don’t see it. We will most likely be fine against a 15 seed in the first round, but I’m afraid it’ll take another special performance from DK to get behind the round of 32.

I also hate that we have become a 1 man team, even though that pissed off some here. We're in the process of proving everything bad the media was saying about us.

Teams that beat us have multiple drivers and have length to defend DK.

Kentucky: Edwards 6'8", Thiero 6'6", Reeves 6'4"
Mississippi State: Matthews 6'7", Jeffries 6'7", Jones 6'5"
UNC: Ingram 6'8", Ryan 6'5"
Kansas: McCullar 6'6", Adams 6'7", Furphy 6'9"
South Carolina: Cooper 6'4", Murray-Boyles 6'7", Stute 6'7" Davis 6'8"

A&M and Purdue were the only two losses to teams that don't have at least 2 bigger wing guys that can defend DK. And we shot like **** from deep & from the line in both of those games.


Not many lower seeds will have that sort of lineup. Have to see how the bracket falls, but I'm not so quick to say we'll be out after the first weekend. I'm never expecting a Final Four, it's never happened so I'm pessimistic on that. Believe it when I see it, I do think we are good enough to make the Elite Eight though and that's my ceiling at this point.

From a consistency standpoint, they are right.

The frustrating part is that we are totally capable of not being a 2-man team (throw ZZ in there). We just can't count on a third player to step-up on offense to really open the spacing and make everyone's job easier.

We're also in a weird spot...

ZZ, Santi, Gainey are all 3 the same player essentially as they don't have the size or speed to consistently beat and get to the rim.

DK is the unicorn as someone else said, he can do it at every level.

Mashack needs to be more assertive on offense when he's playing, he's got better size than the smaller guards and he seems capable of finishing at the rim...but rarely drives or even shoots.

JJJ used to be a lot better and has the same size as DK, not sure what's happened...probably all the injuries and playing the 4 this season with a bigger guy on him.


Moving forward I hope we pursue some better size for our wings that can also drive... Freddie and Carr have the size, yet to be seen how good they'll be driving consistently.

See my edit, but what does the SECT from 2 years ago have to do with this year's March Madness tournament?

We played horrible today, we're 0-2 right now to end the season...people being concerned about the regular season title being all this team accomplishes are totally valid as of right now.

I have always been frustrated by minutes of younger players...

We have 5 Freshmen (RS and True) total minutes played for each:

DJ - 3 (2nd full year on campus)
Cade - 76
Carr - 55
Freddie - 87
JP - 89
310 total combined

Gainey is a first year guy and he played 578 by himself...I just don't get why we don't play the younger and higher rated guys more throughout the season.

Maybe by the “numbers” sense but making it to Omaha from a prestige standpoint feels like the equivalent of making a Final Four. Maybe in the only one that feels that way but Omaha has always felt like a Final Four type of accomplishment.

That’s not a very rational way of thinking. Lots of very good teams don’t make the final four every year. In fact, most of them don’t.

There wasn’t a single All-American player in the final four last year either.

I understand that the Final Four is a crapshoot. But this is undoubtedly our best shot to make the Final Four since 2018-2019. I don’t think it’s crazy to think if this team cannot break through under Barnes, what team will? We aren’t going to see another team with the balance of experience and star power in Knoxville for awhile.

Vescovi has given this program his all and I was hoping for a get right games this weekend but it's lose and season over now. Let's start Mashack over him if nothing else there's no difference right now offensively and at least you'll have ace defensively to start. Let Vescovi watch the game a little bit before going in.
