The Lakers are targeting Dan Hurley oh my...

1. Would love to see him turn down UK in an offseason and then go take another job instead lol.

2. Would love to go poach a player or two of theirs.

It would be wild to see how this affects the college basketball landscape in June. Lanier getting fired kicked off a pretty crazy/unexpected carousel, sure, but UConn is a premier job without a lot of the Kentucky baggage so it wouldn't be surprising to see a fair number of big-name coaches expressing interest.

If Hurley goes to LA he’ll be unemployed in 2 years.

I can't believe what I'm reading regarding Dan Hurley.

Back to back natties with a real possibility of a three-peat and now he might be going to the Lakers? I think that would be a really bad move for him. LeBron will have him fired in a year.

I can't remember the last time I have seen a plbig program lose a coach this late in the off season? I thought the Kentucky situation was bad, sheesh

For me, the Lakers are a chit show and Lebron is a clown who has too much input

While that is true, Hurley has always expressed interest in coaching at the NBA level.

This will depend on multiple factors, including his wife who originally didn't even want to move to Uconn.

It's L.A though, going to be hard for him to pass up one of the best brands in bball

Is this an admission that you don't believe in him as a coach at that level, or an acknowledgement that the Lakers just continue to chew up and spit out coach after coach?

I’m not who you asked. But here is what I’m thinking.

Hurley can’t fix the Lakers roster, and the Lakers roster isn’t competitive. They are like a second round ceiling next year IMO.

Which, ya know. Maybe that’s fine for everybody.

Now the thing that most interests me is that lots of people talk like Hurley has a huge ego. And some of that is justified coming off 2 championships.

But you can’t be a drill sergeant type coach in the NBA. It doesn’t work due to the power dynamics.

So can he manage lunatic, out of control egos, and his own ego at the same time?

We’ll see. I’d assume not. But it’ll be fun to watch.

I’m no NBA expert by any means, but his temperament appears to be authoritarian and he appears to have a short fuse. Sure doesn’t appear to be the type to negotiate with players to buy into the game plan. Probably a better fit at the college level. JMO

I just don’t see him being a good fit with Lebron. He hasn’t listened to a coach since Spo in Miami.

I’d like to see Hurley take over an up and coming franchise like Orlando. Generally I feel like college coaches struggle with established/ veteran led squads.

Agree with this, which is why I would think we (Tennessee fans) probably ought to pull for him to continue trying to build a legacy at UCONN and grow comfortable there. Perhaps a "chicken little" mentality, but it would be awful to see Hurley have turned down UK, this year, only for Mark Pope to possibly fail in three years while Hurley gets spit back out by the Lakers, and then UK and Hurley are both looking at the same time.

I mean, it’s money but at what cost?

Hurley has a legit chance to win another National Title at UCONN. He’s literally king right in college basketball.

LeBron is on the edge of retirement and dealing with a bunch of egos doesn’t seem to be an upgrade from his current job.

Dan Hurley could be a successful NBA coach, but choosing the Lakers as your destination in 2024 feels like a recipe for disaster. An aging roster with some big egos, little to no young talent, and a mandate to likely draft and play your superstars kid in Year 1 to make him happy feels like a weird leap for someone as successful as Hurley to make.

Definitely see him failing and jumping back to college in a few years if he does take the gig.
