Now we have some guy saying he wished Barnes would live up to his compensation level over in the FF

Mears 3x NCAATs, most consecutive: 2
Devoe 6x NCAATs, most consecutive: 5
Green 4x NCAATs, most consecutive: 4
Pearl 6x NCAATs, most consecutive: 6
Martin 1x NCAATs, most consecutive: 1
Barnes 6x NCAATs, most consecutive: 6

Houston: 0 NCAATs
O’Neill: 0 NCAATs
Peterson: 0 NCAATs
Tyndall: 0 NCAATs

The FF clown needs to define what’s an appropriate level of compensation.

The key is fans who want to directly equate salary to success, essentially saying, "We pay you $X million per year, you should win Y number of games/make it to Z round of playoffs or NCAAT."

If salary correlated success, Josh Heupel is overpaid, Mark Stoops is overpaid, Mike Norvell is overpaid, Lane Kiffin is overpaid. Four of the top-10 paid coaches in NCAA, and none have made a CFP. But salary doesn't solely correlate to success. Salary correlates to value and market demand just as much as success.

At the risk of making this yet another Pearl v Barnes discussion, I'll use him for comparison because they almost identical salaries.

Since Barnes has come into the SEC at Tennessee, these are the numbers....
Pearl: 199-99, 2 SECs, 2 SECTs, 5 NCAATs, 1 S16, 1 E8, 1 F4

Barnes: 201-101, 2 SECs, 1 SECT, 6 NCAAs, 3 S16, 1 E8

I know the F4 is viewed as some sort of crowning achievement, but getting there and not winning just means you advanced 1 more round. And Pearl has advanced 1 more round than Barnes 1 time, but that's the jewel in his crown that's eluded Barnes. So, despite being as good or better in nearly every other measurable category, Pearl is viewed with puppy dog eyes while Barnes is called an overpaid underachiever and choker.

IMO, salary is just something that is necessary to be in the mix. Now that’s filtering down to NIL money. It won’t guarantee championships, but not having competitive compensation and very few of those teams have a chance.

If Barnes was 20 years younger, his pay would have to be doubled to keep him at TN.

I understand it was an exhibition but Cade Tyson didn't impress me at all playing for North Carolina. When Carolina is full strength he will be a pine rider.

The key is that so many people in other forums co-signed the FF going off on Heupel and the footVols that it was bound to spread. These types going after Barnes next was to be expected. It's the sad sack "fahr Barnes" type behavior resurrected and applied to football playing out. Wait til it dawns on these types that making the tournament is top 64. (Formerly 32 or 16.) Surprised these same types haven't started razzing Tony for choking away a national championship in '22 yet.

All the negativity is getting old. Barnes is great. Can't wait for this season.

After his visit, I think Tyson wanted to come to UT, although obviously he had strong ties to UNC....if we had a do over, would we rather have Tyson than Dubar? I don't know...we need to see them both a little more....Dubar a little more versatile perhaps....

I think the benefit of Tyson over Dubar is multiple years. Both would likely have been role players this season, but Tyson would have likely been a starter, here, in 2025-26.

I never got the impression that Tyson wanted to come here and we were having him hold off. I think if he wanted to be here he’d be here

Pretty sure it was the inverse of that. Dubar came in days before Tyson and then it leaked we had a real chance with Tyson. Then the stuff about Dubar being way shorter than we were told leaked around the same time. Dubar ended up committing first, but we absolutely wanted Tyson and, from reading what everyone said, it seems we wanted Tyson > Dubar.

Could be off on that last sentence, but the timing of everything certainly seemed to suggest that.

I don’t know if that is accurate. I’m honestly not certain. His UT visit went well and he then didn’t commit to NC after an in home visit by the NC staff. There was then buzz that he may have preferred UT. Then Dubar committed and everything went cold with Tyson at that point. Some of the folks here who get good info may have some thoughts. Just my recollection.

IIRC, Tyson’s camp was requesting guaranteed PT which didn’t seem to work with CRB.

I think there was some buzz about that plus there were some rumblings about NIL issues....Anyway, if true, it would be a shame if the kid really liked Barnes and wanted to come to UT, that things went cold over unrealistic demands. I doubt Hubert Davis would guarantee playing time. Barnes certainly won't. Barnes seems to have adjusted to the new landscape but he's going to manage it his way.
