The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Funny thing is I agreed with him at the time he said it but that's changing and the rest of this game proves it. Gainey is getting more and more comfortable with the ball in his hands.
Gainey has showed all year he has improved his ability to attack the rim with improved quickness (which was already good by SEC standards imo) but, more importantly, he is stronger and more explosive (I would bet that he's added a couple inches on his vert).

I didn't remember we went into the SEC schedule undefeated in 1997, but that was a different era and our OOC opening schedule was rather weak. Our biggest name opponents were Memphis and USC and only Memphis made the NIT. The rest were mid-majors and none made the postseason at all.

We also did in 2020-21 but due to coming back from Covid we only played 6 OOC games before SEC play started. So I don't really count that one.

So assuming no major upset we'll roll into SEC play undefeated for imo the first real time in my Vol watching life.

Hadn’t seen this clip yet. An Illini fan shoved Chaz during the celebration. Sounds like between this and the Momma Mashack experience Illini fans are a lot trashier than I thought.

Would have enjoyed seeing Uros’s reaction if he were still in the program. An Illinois dumb arse would have gotten shoved under the bleachers!

We shouldn't have been celebrating in the courtside seats, but glad to see our guys exercise restraint after the shove.
Ehh, we were on the court, which is the players' area. And by no means were our guys an immediate threat to anyone's personal safety to the point anyone should have felt it necessary to engage in such aggressive contact.

I agree with this but we've had trouble all season getting into our offense when ZZ leaves the game. He settled in and ran the offense by himself which means he's turning the corner and becoming a legit backup point guard.

Usually I'm on the same page with you but they were on the court. And Lanier wasn't even near him and he shoved him in the back. That guy should be banned from going to games at least for a a few years.

On a night where Zeigler and Lanier foul out and miss major 2nd half minutes, Okpara is a non-factor, and Milicic goes 2-13 (0-8), we somehow beat a quality opponent on the road. Oh yeah, that opponent also makes 30 free throws. If anyone had told me this would happen and the Vols would still win, I would have told them they’re being utterly ridiculous.

Our celebration traveled into the courtside seating area; that is not debatable. If YTTV didn't have screenshot protection, I would provide the proof. I'm just saying no team should have a large group celebration in the courtside seating area at an away game.

Dude cmon
You're asking me to come on? Really? I hate playing this card because it's purely hypothetical, but this forum would be up in arms if another team's celebration spilled into the courside seats at TBA. I didn't say the spectator was in the right or excused for the shove, just holding our players accountable for their own actions.

We were in the seating area, but you're right, it made no sense for the shove even taking frustration into account. I agree, guy should be penalized.

Yes really. I’m not looking to get into a long back forth about this, but even if that were the case that this forum would be upset with an equivalent celebration (and I don’t think it is), would that make that response reasonable? The guys were excited and were mobbing Gainey, if they happened to go 18 inches over the out of bounds line, it’s no sin. I’m not overextending the word “literally” when I say the UT players literally did nothing wrong

You’re full of it.

As seen above from the broadcast, the celebration was on the edge of the playing surface.

As seen above from the WCIA angle, the court is below the camera. But it’s clear that the guy who shoved Gainey (blue shirt) was going out of his way into our celebration. The courtside crowd is a several feet away from our players, other than the one instigator.

And finally, as you can see from this angle taken a second after the previous image, after Lanier is pushed, the fan retreats back to the courtside area. He stepped into our celebration because he was a butthurt loser.

Incredible that you’d “both sides” this. If a UT donor sitting courtside did this, they should (and probably would) be permanently banned from TBA.

Sitting courtside is a privilege- you’re literally in the playing area. Players fly into the crowd to save loose balls every night and somehow fan altercations are extremely rare. At worst, our team spilled inches to a foot over the out of bounds line, for mere seconds, while celebrating. Some people just want to argue about anything.

Again, there's no excuse for the spectator's action. I'm arguing that our guys lost awareness of their surroundings, which was a mistake. Not an earth shattering abomination of justice, just an honest mistake. If we were a reasonable distance from the seating area while celebrating, then we wouldn't be talking about his now. We were wholly in the front row of the courtside seats seconds after the end of a buzzer beater.

By that logic we're in the seating area on in bounds. If we had gone into the actual row and hit the actual seats, I might agree with you a bit. But I think saying we were in the seating area is a huge stretch.

Also on the replay if you watch, the guy that shoved Lanier has stepped forward to even get to where he can shove. If he was actually at his seat he wouldn't be that close. In fact they all look like they are away from their actual seats. So I'm not seeing the same thing you are.
