I don’t think we’ll see another shot making display like the one that kid put on last night this season. He was unconscious. I think he got one dunk on a back cut and everything else was contested jumpers.

We switched Gainey onto him very late in the game and it seemed like Johnson was less effective down the stretch. Obviously it was a small sample size over the last few minutes, who's to say that Gainey on him all game would have changed anything. But I found that really interesting.

I will say keeping Johnson on the bench for so long seemed like a terrible move in the moment, and even moreso a terrible move in retrospect. I get not wanting to play a freshman 35-40 minutes but when a player is shooting out of a deep slump in a competitive game, maybe dont break his stride?

Posted this in another thread but thought I would share it here. Chaz is def on a 2 game cold streak as he adjusts to SEC road games but he's an elite shooter so I expect him to figure it out from beyond the arc. Having said that, the bigger issue imo are his 2PA on the road where he is shooting ~30% worse (24% against KP Top 50) - he really needs to be more selective and disciplined on those going forward as teams continue trying to run him off the line. We have to figure out ways to get him more open 3PA vs. him dribble driving more into contested pull-ups.

Dubar certainly has some irrational confidence. Which is something Barnes players sometimes lack and get too timid. Now he also gets lost on defense so hopefully his D improves so he can stay on the court.
Our D scheme is fairly complex so I'll chalk some of that on Dubar missing time to start the season and him working his way into it...hopefully his D assignments become more 2nd nature as he gets more time.

I was pleased with the effort last night. We continue to turn the ball over far too much, and if we don’t value the basketball more in the weeks ahead we’re going to drop some games against lesser competition. For whatever reason, we often choose to make the harder pass instead of the easy one and throw the ball away. I think the best example was Cade coming down with a rebound last, seeing Chaz a few feet away from him, and then deciding to throw it across the court to ZZ and it goes out of bounds.

I like the balance we showed on offense last night, but I’m still a bit concerned about the overall effectiveness of the offense. I think Chaz will figure it out, but we have too many guys being passive on offense. We need to bottle up some of Dubar’s swagger and give it to everyone else.

Igor is too skilled to be passing up some of the open 3’s he is getting at the top of the key. He made his very first 3 of the game early in the 1st half and then didn’t shoot another 3 the rest of the game. He turned down several fairly open shots. And if Machack is really so hurt that he can’t be an effective perimeter shooter, than maybe we need to sit him to get healthy. We’re playing 4 on 5 when he’s out there and it’s making the rest of the offense struggle at times because they are sagging off him and clogging the paint making it impossible to attack the rim.

All of these are things we can improve upon thankfully, but we need to get healthy. Mashack is hurt and Cade is clearly not as effective with that shoulder injury. He missed a dunk last night because of the shoulder.

His own coach was the only one who could stop him last night and he did. Completely took him out of his rhythm

I think it goes without saying that I hate Kentucky from an athletics standpoint, but Mark Pope seems like genuinely great dude and it’s hard to not like him. His demeanor I’m sure is a breath of fresh air for Kentucky fans, even if their team feels like a carbon copy of last year (all offense, no defense).

Way more like able than Calipari.

Still don’t like UK but I have respect for Pope.

I'll start by saying I've never seen a team shoot so many step-backs and turn-around jumpers for an entire game...good grief.

Anyway, Chaz continued to struggle (not worried - he'll snap out of it) but we got the W and we seemed to right the ship a bit on offense as we shot better overall and were more efficient. I thought ZZ didn't attack the paint enough in the 1H but he more than corrected that in 2H. Continue to love Dubar's game and he showed why some of us felt he will help us win some games down the road which is exactly what he did last night...12 and 6 with no t/o and only 1 foul. Okpara continues to show signs of developing...pretty solid game defensively although he is still a bit too inconsistent at times and the 4 OR were nice...need more putbacks from him. Igor was efficient but he has to look more to score (7 pts ain't gonna cut it from him)...also need more reb from him (6 is not enough).

Having said that, 2 games now where we have given up too many OR, turning the the ball over too much (esp last night), and shooting poorly from the charity stripe. Gotta clean that up and also generate a few more steals and t/o on D.

I’d give Igor a bit of slack, Dubar & Cade producing means they’re taking minutes somewhere and he was also in foul trouble.

He has to look to score more though, but 3-5 for 7 points and 6 rebounds in 23 minutes is pretty efficient play. He turned down at least 2 open 3s though. His 3 turnovers was the frustrating part.

You mentioned it, the turnovers really made that game closer than it should have been.

Fair point on his minutes but he was still too hesitant to shoot the 3 as you called out and we really needed him to help get some easy points at the rim and/or FT line esp in 1H when most everyone seemed to be struggling on O.

Yeah, he wasn’t just getting layups or open looks. That was a hot NBA talent getting hot. But we held him in check 2nd half, think he had 22 in 1st half and just 4 in second.

Barnes is playing it smart with Mashack imo, he only played 21 minutes. Last 4 games he’s played 25 or less every game, as Dubar emerges and Cade gets healthy we may see Mashack play less. But Barnes is not simply giving the minutes to players who haven’t earned them.

Gainey’s defense has really improved though so it’s helping.

No doubt he was unconscious - it's really frustrating how often that happens to us with our D where a guy goes of for 20+ against us as we pretty much shutdown everyone else on their team. And Coach Terry def screwed up his minutes imo the 2H by sitting him too long.

Dubar's aggressiveness and outside shot helped open the floor for ZZ at the end of the game. Good adjustments by Barnes.

From Igor, I'd like to see him look inside on offense. At least against Texas, there is the opportunity to play pick and roll with Igor because defense is focused on Chaz and the other guard - ZZ or Gainey. You can even play Igor and Dubar together.

Nice bounceback road win.

Nice to see ZZ do his stuff at the end, Dubar show out, and Okpara show out.

By product of shorter guards. Usually length is what hurts shooters. All our length is in the front court.

Every guard is 6’4” or shorter, and when a guy is 6’6” and can rise to shoot, good luck. We changed to denying him looks more than just trying to contest them and it worked

Does anyone know if Igor can dunk without a running start? He’s missing too many bunnies where it seemed like he could have dunked it.

Exactly! I've been saying this for weeks. His resistance to dunk the ball at his height is so frustrating. He misses way too many shots right at the rim because of his finesse approach to scoring at the basket.

I think Pope was just trying to mack on his wife. Bwaa-ha-ha, I'm just kidding. Really classy by Pope, he even sat down and talked to the man. I hate to admit it, but I think UK got it right with this hire. Pope's 'Cats are winning and they are mostly transfers, wait until he builds a foundation with his recruits. Plus, UK will always be a landing spot for big time portal talent. Still think they are a pretender for the SEC regular season title, this year

His sophomore year, he had a few games that he kind of took over during dead slumps, just driving to the basket over and over. I remember thinking "wow, this year to year development is awesome."

Then... it kind of fizzled out. Never got a reliable jumper, although he occasionally takes and makes a 3. It felt like if he could develop a mid range game like pons or fulkerson (or even just take and make a 3 at a higher usage rate), we'd be better off. Idk, both hearing and seeing from coaches the disregard for his offensive game is disheartening. He's so athletic you have to think there's another gear in there somewhere.

That being said, my credentials are limited to playing in church leagues 20 years ago so I'm positive Barnes has this figured out better than I do.
The fact that he can’t just drive into the paint and dunk the ball is insane considering his size and athleticism.

I only saw the first 8-10 minutes of the UF game, but CL got two open looks from 3 in the first 5 minutes. He just missed, and they were actually close misses- rimmed out. I didn’t see anything after that.
