The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

I only saw the first 8-10 minutes of the UF game, but CL got two open looks from 3 in the first 5 minutes. He just missed, and they were actually close misses- rimmed out. I didn’t see anything after that.
He actually went 0-4 in the first three & a half minutes. Missed three 3's and a mid-range jumper. All were open looks, the shots just weren't falling for anyone.

The Vols play at Georgia on Wednesday. The 'Dogs frosh, forward, Asa Newell is another kid that is projected as a NBA first round pick, next year. Man, the SEC is loaded with great teams and players. Vols win 75-66, another tough battle.

From 1 to 6, I get it…still a single road loss to a top 10 team regardless of by how much shouldn’t be punished that harshly imo.

Oh well.

Don’t disagree with you, but any time you lose a nationally televised game by 30 it changes people’s opinion of you rather drastically. I’ve already seen some media who were all in on the Vols as one of the top 2 teams in the SEC now dropping us to 5th in the conference in their mind.

We’re going to have to earn the trust back. Hopefully starting this week.

I think as things stand now we are 4th in conference rankings probably after AU, UF, and bama. Things can change and injuries obviously happen to everyone but it seems like it is much more challenging for vols to put the basketball in the net compared to other 3.

Yep. You can't get beat by 30 in conference play, especially as the #1 team. Then add in we only had one player in Okpara who actually acted like they had interest in playing in that game. It's definitely deserved to drop us the way they did

Probably should still be above bama but also understand can't lose by 30 to another team and not drop several spots. If vols take care of business Auburn and bama both have tough weeks coming up and vols can move up in polls.
Why should we be ahead of Bama? They’ve beaten Houston, Illinois, Oklahoma, Creighton and won at UNC and A&M. Ton of quality wins.

Doesn’t really matter at this point because there are a bunch of games left. But, we beat Illinois on the road. Our Louisville win is better than UNC, and their Creighton win is similar to our Arkansas win by the numbers. Texas actually has some better numbers than OU. That leaves Houston and A&M to our Baylor when we were also hoping UVA and Miami would be pretty good teams. Not terribly far off.

Plus, Bama has 2 losses, Vols have one. Doesn't matter, tho

It's close but we were already ahead of them and only suffered one loss. Not a big deal 5th or 6th but my personal opinion should have been 5th.

Going by the metrics, their win at UNC is better than our win at Louisville because UNC is higher in KenPom and the NET rankings. Same for their win vs Creighton, who is ranked higher than Arkansas. Oklahoma is higher than Texas, too. Houston and A&M are both ranked in the top 15 of KenPom and Houston is even #1 in the BPI and #3 in both KenPom and the NET. A&M is above Baylor in all three, too. Clear advantage to Alabama. Plus, they didn’t lose by 30 a week ago.

Doesn’t change the fact that the human polls have no bearing on anything. They’re just for show. College hoops is driven by computer rankings more than any other sport, so the idea our wins are better than Alabama’s is false based on the data.

You’re right, it doesn’t. Basketball rankings work much differently than football. Number of losses are almost never a factor.
It looks as if AP voters just look at which teams won or lost each week and just adjust their votes accordingly. There's some adjustment for strength of opponent, mainly if their ranked or unranked, but there's barely any analytics taken into account, compared to KenPom or BartTovik.

AP polling appears to be more of a trending index than an actual indicator of the "best teams" in college basketball.

Just for discussion, Louisville and UNC are close (Louisville is higher in the NET) and Louisville beat UNC (why I mentioned it). Arkansas is higher than Creighton in the NET and only a few spots behind in KenPom. Texas is higher than OU in the NET. It’s why I looked at multiple indexes and what the committee uses. OU’s OOC schedule wasn’t exactly stellar. I did the deep dive and why I surmised that Alabama’s wins were not all that off from ours.
