The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Won’t lie I am extremely drunk and haven’t read stuff from here or the game thread but a few thoughts:

1. We play these idiots at home and we easily win
2. We played awful, on Florida levels, and still hung with the number 1 team in America
3. Auburn fakes more injuries than any team in the history of NCAAB

That reflects off their HC.

I have zero respect for Pearl even though his nut huggers think he hung the moon.

I don't think Pearl tries to recruit a "culture" He will play any type
player he has as long as he is productive. He loves the players
that stare down the opponent (the Laimbeer type) like Broome

Players reflect the coach and it’s clear Pearl loves the spectacle of the game first and foremost. If it works for him, great, but his players are a bunch of flopping drama queens. It wouldn’t shock me if they get ousted the first weekend again if they play a tough minded team because this Auburn team will fold if punched back.

Most players ultimately mirror the coach. Pearl’s over-the-top behavior is imitated by Broome, Baker-Mazara, and Cardwell, just to name 3. He recruits kids that Barnes would never touch as we’ve all plainly seen. He’s a very good coach and recruiter, but on so many levels he’s pushing the envelope and I can say unabashedly that I’m proud of this Vol team.

What a game from our coaches and players despite coming up short...if we bottle up that intensity and focus - we'll have a great end to our season. The 3 key questions in mind are as follows:

1) Will we have a let down coming out of this game? The next 7 games is a murderer's row and we can't show up like we did at Vandy especially

2) Will our frontcourt start scoring more consistently? I said at the beginning of the season Okpara and Milicic have to combine with 17+ points per game...well they did that in OoC but only 2x so far in SEC play (Ark & Vandy). We especially need Milicic to step up (he has only scored 7 pts in the last 2 games COMBINED) especially from 3. This would really take the pressure off this team...and that brings up my next point...

3) Will we be able to avoid the 30% or less nights from the 3 pt line? We are basically living and dying from the 3 (see previous question)...we shot 30% or worse in 3 of our first 7 SEC games - this is the biggest threat to this team's goals because this is precisely the kind of attribute that kills a team in the NCAA tourney so, needless to say, this trend has to stop going forward. Hopefully we Milicic can start hitting from deep and hopefully we can scheme so ways to get more open looks for Chaz (we all know he doesn't need much time so a split second or so will do it).

4) Can we control the boards and take care of the ball in tough games? In all of our losses we let the other team outrebound us for both total reb's and O-reb's (we tied Vandy for total reb's but I'm counting that as losing)...we have control the boards against good teams (Captain Obvious I know but still super critical). Much like the boards...we have to decisively win the t/o war to make the game easier but we are not doing that...our record is 2 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties in our SEC games - that ain't gonna cut it especially with our O inconsistency.

That's my $0.02. GBO

We we had the W within our reach and we should have made more plays to win that game. Having said that AU is really, really good on both sides of the ball. And then there's the elephant in the room which is the current sad state of SEC officiating. It's not why we lost but it was def a factor in the outcome of the game.

Under 3 min:

1) Milicic drives to the rim and an AU defender jumps sideways into him while being in the restricted zone and knocks Milicic under the basket and clearly commits a foul - no call, play on

2) Broome fouls Okpara multiple times on the inbound pass as the refs apparently didn't understand AU was trying to foul intentionally. Even worse, they call a walk when replay clearly shows Okpara started initiating a dribble action as he was getting knocked off his pivot foot and Okpara almost immediately lost control as ZZ's leg hit the ball - whistle blows, travel called, CRB Gronks his water bottle (loved to see it!)

3) Broome reb the last shot of the game immediately comes down on 2 feet then inexplicably jumps forward with ~3 sec on the clock to pass the ball - no call

I've seen middle school refs do better.

I usually don’t complain about the refs, but last night was the most bias referees I have seen in a long time.

We had 18 fouls. They had 16.

I thought they did a decent job up until the obvious miss on Okpara
They allowed a tone to be set in the first half. Equally bad calls both sides except in the last few minutes of the game. Refs called an even rock fight first half and an uneven in the second half in the last minutes of the game. Trying to put the worms back in the can.

This type of game calling is going to get players hurt, upsets, and cause early exits in the Tourney.

This. Even Bilas was calling out the refs for not being consistent and how we were getting jobbed on some calls. And if he hates UT as much as some seem to believe on here then that really says a lot about how bad it was if he was defending us.

Cardwell was down to us or the barn and went barn.
