I will say though, It’s not really quantifiable in numbers/data, but Bruce turning Auburn into the yearly threat they are is on of the most impressive feats in modern sports. It would be like someone turning UK football into a yearly national title threat. Even that may be underselling it.

Yeah but they also put the investment into him, which I'll give him credit for getting them to. I give Barnes credit for getting us back but Pearl did prove it can happen here too.

The only other job I've seen better is TV making Tennessee baseball what it is.

Mears was a very good coach and would have been better if not for his health issues. He had the Ernie and Bernie show which was the hottest game in college basketball back in his days.

I see that ESPN has ranked the college basketball coaches

1. Pearl
12 Penny
14 Barnes

don't know about that
Good Lord. Any list that puts Penny above Barnes is an absolute joke and should only be used to line a bird cage. He has made 1 NCAA tournament in his tenure at Memphis with a good bit of talent and playing in the League of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Runs no semblance of an offense. He can’t hold Barnes’ clipboard.

IMHO he is. I'm looking at last 20 years or so. Bruce has turned programs around at a high level. I guess if you just wanted to go off the last 2 years, then Hurley would be it.

Hurley has turned three programs around in the last 15 years. Pearl is having a better season thus far, but there’s very little argument that he’s a better coach than Hurley.

Saw later that it was based on this year. Still don’t buy it. Memphis has beaten a couple of decent teams but they’ve also gone to the wall with several bad AAC teams lately and were lucky to win. Until Penny coaches well for a full season and does something in the tournament, I wouldn’t put him in the top 30.

I wouldn’t put him above Barnes either, but their out of conference wins are impressive- Mizzou, UConn, Michigan State, Clemson, Ole Miss. 2-1 against the SEC. He would need to win some games in March to be put above Barnes for the year.

That’s all fair, but the Auburn hoops job was maybe the worst in the SEC pre-Bruce. It’s more of a Vandy level job, comparing to football - they just have more money in general for sports. Agreed on Bruce getting Auburn to buy in.

Auburn didn’t look like the unanimous #1 and metrics darling they were made up to be.

A little of that was us. A little of that was them having a rough shooting night on top of our defense.

Ultimately, it’s hard to be too upset with the outcome. It was their home floor after all.

It’s frustrating of course, that we had the opportunity to get the W and couldn’t quite get there. But oh well.

Auburn has won 4 SEC games by less than 5 points (2, 2, 3, 5). They are good, resilient even, but they are beatable.

Agree 100%. I can point to a couple things we did that I didn't like, but this was def the most mild Auburn loss I can recently remember.

I’m not even mad we lost. I expected us to get cooked and we went toe to toe and lost by 2 on their court.

I’m more bummed that little things got us. Mashack once again fouled a 3 point shooter and him hitting that second FT shot would have put us up 5. We still may have lost but a 5 point lead might have made things different.

I’m not going to say it was wrong because Mashak took an aggressive move while defending the 3 pointer. But Baker-Masara also flopped. He made sure to whack Mashak on a big follow through to get the foul.

Won’t lie I am extremely drunk and haven’t read stuff from here or the game thread but a few thoughts:

1. We play these idiots at home and we easily win
2. We played awful, on Florida levels, and still hung with the number 1 team in America
3. Auburn fakes more injuries than any team in the history of NCAAB

I think most everyone expected a loss here. Kinda hurts a little worse just because we were up with seconds to go and could've won. Defend the home court against Kentucky and Florida and we remain on the 1 seed potential level.
