Yeah credit to Houston...

We got it close 50-40

Sharp then goes 3 of 3 from deep and they iced it. He went 4-10 for the game, those 3 were huge though.
Of their 4 losses, 3 of them were in OT and the other they led late against Auburn but just didn’t close.

They’re arguably about 5 plays away from being 38-0 right now.

Another huge factor was Cryer scoring 17 against us after going 2-13 from the field against Purdue. He and Sharp were the daggers that ultimately brought us down, although very poor shooting was the biggest culprit in the first half.

1st half 6 of 28 on FGs 21.4%, 1 of 15 on 3PT 6.7%
2nd half 9 of 24 on FGs 37.5% 4 of 14 on 3PT 28.6%

We didn't really shoot great either half...but what's wild is had we shot the 1st half same as 2nd. That would have been another 12 points....and had we shot our typical averages of 45.2% FG & 33.8% 3PT we would've scored 73.

Game just came down to our poor shooting and inability to rebound. They took 14 more shots than we did too. 19 second chance points to just 8 for us. 30 points in the paint to our 14.

Defense wasn't elite, but our offense was the difference maker.

Sucks too because I was worried that Chaz would be cold...he had only hit 1 of 6 from deep against Kentucky.

At the point where we cut it to 50-40, their rebounding margin had been cut to +4 from +9 at the half. I could never have seen Chaz going 2-12 from 3 in this game after the Kentucky game.

Hopefully a lesson for the "We want Houston!" crowd who was hoping we'd be in their bracket. That team is just a better version of Tenneesee. Maybe a glimpse for our fans of what other teams feel like playing against us.

Well, to be fair, we weren’t going to be paired with Florida or Auburn. So, it was always Duke or Houston. And I stand by thinking we had a better chance to beat Houston than Duke. We simply did not play well against Houston. If we had played like we did against Auburn in the SEC Tournament, or Kentucky two days before, I think we would have won or at the very least made it a very close game.

But we played nervous, looked like the pressure of the moment got to us, and inexplicably had one of our worst shooting performances of the year. It was just a perfect storm that I think had more to do with us than Houston.

A big part of that was that we switched to a half court trap at that point, partly because we weren't chipping away at the lead fast enough. Houston played with discipline and knocked down their shots to close it out. That honestly may have been a mistake on our part, but either that strategy or sticking with our grinding had a low chance of success with the amount of time we had left.

It was happening more recently than tourney selection. People wanted Houston over Purdue

Good post. Your 2nd paragraph was spot-on.

And he had about as much to do with the success of the Pearl era teams as I did.

You’d never see Chris Lofton or Wayne Chism pull crap like this and they’re the ones who actually made those teams go.
The man couldn’t jump one foot off the floor. I didn’t care for Willams when he was on the roster. He was out of shape though he lost weight to earn playing time. But he wasn’t a big part of that team’s success.

I find it a bit interesting how much the media seemed to bash Tennessee for losing by 19 to Houston.

I don't really recall seeing as much about Bama losing by 20 to Duke.
I think it was the 15 points in first half that caught everyone’s eye. And I think 4-6 were from the foul line.

Still a great season! I was ticked off after game but proud of this team. I’m selfish in saying I’m tired if debating w/ others about TN athletics.

Baseball Vols won the chip but it feels like this yrs basketball team would be the 1st. At least i did.

Love my Vols though I vent and beach! And I’ll be in Neyland this fall, spending my $$ every wkend -plus tix.
