I didn’t even think it was a terrible call... actually looked like a strike to me. But either was you can’t square up to an ump and drop an f bomb. Ump had to toss him.How hard is it not to drop the f bomb? Say anything else. It was a Terrible call followed by a Terrible decision by Gilbert. I’m surprised this is the first time he’s been tossed.
I’m so torn on this issue. Part of me thinks it’s a good idea but part of me doesn’t want to see the human element taken out of the game. I kinda feel like that’s what makes baseball, baseball.
But I get your point, because it can be very frustrating!
GBO!!
Agreed, mostly. I’m not offended. I just want the team to win on the merits, not lose on technicalities. Gilbert got a bad wrap when he got hit. He kept his cool. The bad strike call sent him over. It happens. We lost on a razor’s edge tonight. We pitched great, but had bad pitch selection. Throwing fastballs in the zone 0-2 is a big no no. It cost us five runs. The ball skipping off the rubber on a clear base hit cost us two runs, and who knows what Gilbert and FA cost us. TV burned a lot of bullpen gambling. We just need to play our game and not force a loss we can avoid. They’ll have a better pitcher tomorrow. They’re up one. Let’s play the game.I can’t say I disagree. Personally, I don’t think the antics are really that “offensive”. I think it’s more that we just have a whole lot of thin skinned, weak-knee people out there who hear an F-bomb and immediately toss a kid. But, you make good points because it’s those thin-skinned people who hold the fate of our season in their hands.
Clearly, the umpires do not like us and do not like how we conduct ourselves, and that bit us in the backside tonight. We probably need to reign it in a bit, because we’re not getting the benefit of the doubt with any call. No other player on any other team is getting rung up as quickly as Gilbert did tonight. They would have gotten a warning first.
I think DG was good until the 4th f-bomb. He was given a leash and he hung himself. I love the edge and won’t condemn it but the utter look of shock on his face even pissed me off. You can’t tell an ump his call was “f-ing horrible” 4x and then act shocked when you’re ejected at the end.I can’t say I disagree. Personally, I don’t think the antics are really that “offensive”. It wasn’t a strike. Very clearly a ball. There were about 30 other pitches he called that way too. Horrible excuse for an umpire.

Disagree wholeheartedly. They use a 2 inch margin of error whenever evaluating umpires. So if 3 inches is the case, then this guy should be umpiring high school games. Absolutely pathetic.3 inches outside was a strike for both teams. In Drew's case, they would be 3 inches inside. He called it all game the same for both teams, You just adjust ti that and hit them, No biggie. Happens every weekend. He was a right eye dominant umpire.
Not a marketing public relationions person I see. Brands are destroyed by events like what happened tonight. Players shouldn't cuss at umpires, fans don't trash thier own field. That's not baseball. You bet the UT administration will have something to say about this behind the scenes too. Doners, sponsors see it too. Not a good look. They'll clean it up.Brand’s don’t exist within isolated events. They’re shaped over time. Our brand is stronger than ever. There’s a reason TN is just now committing resources to baseball in the SEC.
It’s not just that he used the f word. its the way he did it. If he hangs his head and mumbled the same words nothing probably happens. But you can’t turn to face the ump and say that to his face and expect to get away with it.He shouldn’t have done it, but I completely disagree with the sentiment that he “had” to toss him. He didn’t have to do it. He wanted to do it. I’ve seen far worse slide by. Let’s not act like the F-bomb isn’t some frequent word used on the diamond. Again, Drew should have contained himself, but let’s not pat the umpire on the back for being INCREDIBLY soft.
